What is Ethereum for beginners?
At its simplest, Ethereum is an open software platform based on blockchain technology that enables developers to build and deploy decentralized applications.
Is Ethereum similar to Bitcoin? Well, sort of, but not really.
Like Bitcoin, Ethereum is a distributed public blockchain network. Although there are some significant technical differences between the two, the most important distinction to note is that Bitcoin and Ethereum differ substantially in purpose and capability. Bitcoin offers one particular application of blockchain technology, a peer to peer electronic cash system that enables online Bitcoin payments. While the bitcoin blockchain is used to track ownership of digital currency (bitcoins), the Ethereum blockchain focuses on running the programming code of any decentralized application.
In the Ethereum blockchain, instead of mining for bitcoin, miners work to earn Ether, a type of crypto token that fuels the network. Beyond a tradeable cryptocurrency, Ether is also used by application developers to pay for transaction fees and services on the Ethereum network.

What is a smart contract?
Smart contract is just a phrase used to describe computer code that can facilitate the exchange of money, content, property, shares, or anything of value. When run on the blockchain a smart contract becomes like a self-operating computer program that automatically executes when specific conditions are met. Because smart contracts run on the blockchain, they run exactly as programmed without any possibility of censorship, downtime, fraud or third party interference.

Just found out about Ethereum and opened a wallet for investing in the technology. As a CompSci student a few years back I was extremely interested in Bitcoin. I have a question that maybe be quite nuanced in more general discussion, but I'll ask anyways. Analysts have argued that claiming inherent security in the block-chain concept leave significant margins of error in the security of systems built upon it and think that ethereum is progressing and too quickly to fully test the system itself. It's built on Javascript (not the most 'secure' scripting language). From a purely intellectual perspective the goals that ethereum pursue are absolutely necessary in further advancement of the information age. Do you think that ethereum will be as "lucky" as bitcoin in that it will stand the test of time (ie 8 years at least) not to be eclipsed by some simpler, cleaner, more secure predecessor? The many platforms that are being developed around Ethereum don't seem to be built exclusively for Ethereum and show extensibility and adaptibitly as strong points, does this not show reason for concern? 0x4031fe9b7b15297fcf1147f73d7745dda1398bbb

Hey Ameer! Great videos-keep up the good work. Question-Can you please explain the supply cap of Bitcoin vs the supply cap of Ethereum? Bitcoin has a limited supply cap? Ethereum does not. Which means bitcoin will always be priced higher PER coin because of scarcity.

Excellent video. Except the errors at the end pertaining to what codes Bitcoin & Ethereum were created. Bitcoin code is known just as Bitcoin Script. It's code is similar to Forth. It is purposefully not Turing complete- with no loops. Ethereum was written in C++, Go & Rust.

There are still a lot of things I don't understand. Let's start with Bitcoin: people can "earn" Bitcoins by "mining" - this involves running software that (from your description) "guesses" numbers? I don't understand why this is valuable, or in other words, why anyone would consider exchanging something tangible for computer time spent cracking numbers to no particular end. With regards to Ethereum, I still don't understand what a "contract" is, at all. Or any single practical application for what Ethereum apparently does. What about some solid examples? Are we talking about something like: modelling weather patterns; modelling the effects of a nuclear explosion; gene sequence analysis; simulating the aerodynamics of a shape in a wind tunnel; rendering scenes in a movie; finding the optimum layout for motherboard components? If these are realistic uses for the platform, how would they be represented in "contracts"? And presumably for each use-case, the individual or organisation which wants to make use of Ethereum as a distributed computer platform would still need to write all of the code for their particular requirements. By which I mean, a company wanting to do weather forecasting would need to write a completely ground-up application to crunch their data and then distribute this to the block chain, and another company wanting to test the efficiency of a car design in a virtual wind tunnel would need to write an entirely different application to work with their data, and distribute these to the block chain? Who decides how these things are parallelized? Is it up to the coder to choose how to slice up the the data to be processed into chunks to be sent out to each processing node? And what about the ledger? Do you have to store a complete copy of the ledger if you want to participate in executing contracts? How long will this be viable is the ledger is growing at 1GB per month?

Well, Bitcoin is real "money" value when ether is *oil* which worth real "money/btc", I think we should keep that in mind. Plus I'm pretty sure they will never shift to POS as they say, it's always delayed and they play it really well. Bitcoin is like a slow dinosaure really solid (global computation) while ethereum is also solid at some point but more flexible, community and feature. Also, take care of the ether total supply, I'm not sure it's define yet...

I think Javascript is on the contrary, a huge disadvantage. Sure it opens it up to more developers but it comes with great limitations and in performance, code quality and flexibility. In my opinion, having quality development is far more superior than having quantity.

If something sounds too good to be true, it fucking is. Period. These people are convinced they've found a get-rich quick scheme. If you got in on bitcoin early, good for you. Now the secret is out, and once that happens it's over. Despite the innate ability for block chain to prevent fraud (it costs more energy to go back in the chain and edit the blocks in order to scam people, it doesn't prevent people who own large amounts of the coin to trigger reactions of sell offs of coin, and thus manipulate the value of the currency in order to buy large amounts of it. And in the long term, the limited volume of the currency isn't sustainable. This shit is retarded, they're just making GPUs more expensive, and they're destroying the environment. All so they can "git rich quick"! Fucking retards.

I just heard about Ethereum yesterday. I am already trying to setup a miner but struggling to work it out.
