You forgot an important point that favours drifting, if you are blasting eurobeat it adds extra horsepower and allows you to get as close as 5 cm away from the guardrail.

Darkg 63 no the FIA used BOP (balance of performance) against eurobeat, and the effect is minimalised, since not much people use it now, grip now use the Stephen Baysted's Spa 24, unfortunatley most drift fans have no clue to what that track is, but the song was used in simulators, not forza, like gtr2, and Project Cars 1 and 2.

Way to drift for speed: Build a grip car so in most occasions you can effectively grip, but have brakes setup for a braking drift (a good bit of rear brake bias) so if you need to, you can force oversteer for especially tight corners or in momentum transfer occasions.

He is right, if you try to turn your car in a corner on a really bad surface you will notice that the car turns but the direction don't change at all. But as you turn your car the direction will start to change. The change in direction is like the bisector of a angle.
@elemento1991
@elemento1991 2 жыл бұрын
@@BlackVogel1 replying to an old comment but another reason it is faster on dirt, especially with awd is because you are creating 4 torque vectors in the direction of the turn rather than just the two in the front. The lack of grip also prevents the car from taking a “set” as you would get on from the traction on asphalt and pavement so it’s better to get the nose pointed where you need and let the tires dig for traction.

One could say that drift is a way to achieve grip on loose surfaces + very tight corners, in those specific situations its easier to achieve it this way ( you are using your sidewalls more instead of the normal tire surface, to dig into the road material), in all other situations normal grip driving is better to propell you forward, energy is not wasted into tire burn, pushing the car to the side instead of forward, aerodynamic losses etc.

Tire heat. Use brakes more - still heats the tires. Go past the coefficient of friction - durr. So it's really slip angle/and or using tires to also brake while already setting up the suspension to go into the corner and still playing around the limit of the tires; and grip is trying to drive at the limit of the tire grip, which yes, can work against gaining extra split seconds coming into corners to come out faster as well.

Great vid! And how about in a racing environment. Like when you have cars around you and you are trying to pass them or avoid crashing. My thoughts: drifting can be more aggressive and allow you to enter the corners from the inside at higher speeds but gripping has a lot more control and you can change lines easier.

Drift became famous on japan because: 1: It takes practice, and when you're good it looks like you're dancing with your car, as if it was an extention of yourself. 2: It is faster _for them_ , given that most street races (apart from highway battles) are done in mountains (which favor drift a lot, given that most corners are tight, and there are a lot of steep up/downhills).

Do you think it would be faster to adopt a hybrid style for touge (pass) racing? The easiest way to think about it would be initiating. A drift at the beginning of a sharp turn but instead of holding the angle to the end, you try to have your car just about lined up by the apex to leave the corner in the same manner a grip car would.

Curious about your opinion on going half way between? You can make pretty much anything handle at that half way between point of high slip front and rear but not burning rubber and it seems to be faster than both for me. Basically carrying that point right before your rear tires loose traction and you front tires aren't really turnings. I can get fwd and awd to do it but don't really remembering how well it worked in rwd also atleast for low rear weight cars the drifting is faster because you have more rear traction. It how I crashed my pickup you slow down and get lift off so you have no choice but to drift or at least have lots of oversteer.

Some things I think you forgot in favor of drifting: 1.A situation where you are taking the inner corner during a takeover or while head to head, and the other driver is on the outer corner. They will slow down to take the corner, hoping to take the apex of the corner to accelerate out. Drifting will allow you to continue your straight line speed longer, allowing you to deny them the apex and in turn come out of the corner faster. 2. A situation (most likely rally) where youre on a surface your car is not set up for, and you suffer from under or over steer. 3. A situation where you do not know the turn ahead, or did not slow down in time, and you drift to save yourself from having to come to a stop or from a bad accident.

I have a question Drifting is almost the same as oversteer Oversteering, is like the car is turning more of what you're saying to him (with the steering wheel) By countersteer you're just correcting the oversteer to turn and don't to spin, so... This could be another advantage for drifting?

hi, when using gokart i always have wonder when is convinient sliding vs gripping... example: large curve where you can keep wide open throttle and you are just slightly sliding of a couple of degree, if you lift off a little you loose too much power if you dont you waste energy sliding the kart...what is best?
@projectcar1079
@projectcar1079 7 жыл бұрын
That actually sounds more like the slip angle of the tires. Slip angle is the angle between a rolling wheel's actual direction of travel and the direction towards which it is pointing. In the example you use, I would simply lift off the accelerator slightly if the slide is beyond the slip angle of the tires to try and increase efficiency. You might be surprised by how much faster you can go if you aren't creating drag by sliding along the track. -RR

ShamanLF I would enjoy seeing that also, from what I know though, fwd is unarguably the worst on the track, but easiest and cheapest to build hence why so many road cars are fwd. It's just asking to much when you're racing, like putting one person in charge of a whole project, the front wheels have to steer, and now accelerate and put power down (along with braking). And while I'm sure drifting with front wheel drive is possible, I have no idea how and the driver I would assume better be good. Ps: your English is fine, learning a second language is hard and you seem to have it down, even your grammar is good.

In front wheel drive cars you can technically drift. Drifting is basically a controlled oversteer, a traction condition where the rear tires have lost traction to the point that they rear end breaks free and has a wider turning arc than the front tires, the rear tires OVER STEER the front tires. This is a condition that is possible with anything that has 4 wheels and as long as the object that those wheels are attached to are moving. Front wheel drive cars are generally looked down upon because it is very hard to get them to oversteer and you are more likely to encounter the opposite of oversteer which is where you lose traction in the front tires and are no longer able to steer which usually ends up in an accident. In a front wheel drive car the front tires are performing the task of steering which has it's own type of wear, and the task of providing power to get the car moving in the direction they are pointing, what this means is they have more tasks to complete with the limited amount of traction those front tires have. When cornering a front wheel drive car is more likely to understeer based upon the simple fact that the front tires are being spun by the engine very fast and if you start to lose traction in the tires that steer the car you simply won't be able to steer. Since power and steering are combined into the front tires in a front wheel drive car, you must keep power and steering inputs in a balance in order to keep the traction in the front tires. Again, you are limited by this drive train because if you request too much angle you won't be able to deliver a bunch of power because you are likely going to break traction, if you request too much power, you are likely going to encounter a limit in steering ability because you may lose traction. You are limited by this drive train configuration based upon the fact that your engine has no direct effect on the rear wheels and their ability to break traction to enter a drift. Powersliding is about the only thing you can do to oversteer in a front wheel drive. The only really widely accepted true form of drifting you can do in a front wheel drive car is a Scandinavian flick which is only really useful on hairpin turns.

As far as daily driving a fwd car, they are perfectly fine, they are simple to manufacture and maintain. Since the engine sits on top of the front tires, the front tires that drive the car have more traction from the weight. In a racing scenario front wheel drive is fine except when under hard acceleration you may lose traction and understeer as a result of your tires having to spin as well change direction of a very heavy vehicle. A second disadvantage is every car has a tendency to shift it's weight back to the rear tires when accelerating and this takes traction away from the front tires.

@@jdschley Drifting in a FWD car is possible, but not necessarily good or true. Since there is no power going to the rear it is very hard to maintain the slide, as the throttle will only snap you out of the drift. The two main ways people do it are by either ripping the handbrake at the start of the turn to lock up the rear tires and slide them out (very VERY hard on the tires), or the faster, "better" option which is to do a braking or "inertia" drift, which is when you come into the turn very fast and weight transfer to the front either by braking or lifting off the throttle, and then flicking the car into the turn very sharply to kick out the rear tires, and once the car is pointed to the exit of the corner, you countersteer the front wheels towards the road and hammer the gas, which snaps the car out of the drift. It's fun but I've really only gotten it to work on sharp downhill corners, as in that scenario the car has enough momentum to hold speed through the drift, and overall I can go through the corner faster than if I were gripping. (But that's maybe because the tires on my 2014 mazda6 have 40k miles on them :P) FWD power sliding is a blast though.

Yep. With low angle, efficient drifting, your corner entry is faster than grip, but exit is slower as you're fighting wheelspin. In various occasions, exit might be equal.

Althought circuit racer always said grip is always faster than drift, But rally drivers always slide their cars in every corner, no matter they drive AWD, RWD or even FWD. And now i know why, they slide because they cant grip on loose gravel, so drifting is faster and safer option, they perfected their techniques for it. So gripping is faster if you use wide, slick and warm racing tire and switch them on the track. But on narrow hard rubbers as cold as tom shelby wich is faster? I dont know but drifting always cooler

Simply put it like this Drift -rwd specialty Grip-fwd ,awd speciality Cars have different abilities and class, if they were all rwd, would rwd be so fun if there isn’t any diversity or difference? Not everyone can drive a rwd car nor everyone cant get use to fwd cars, it all depends on what you feel behind the wheel of any car you look for for performance, you’re just not gonna be able to drift in any car period

Just watch how WRC drivers do on tarmac from late 90s, or group A touring cars, you will find out none of these is the quickest way to go around the corner. #1 sharp turns in rally doesn't count though. The length of the race (or distance you have to go before next tyre changes), areodymic device usage, suspension set up, and specific tyres types changes, or even driver's prefer line changes the end result.
