Check out The Child and Nature Alliance website for a great resource on Forest Schools.
childnature.ca/about-forest-a...
Here are the 10 principals that we apply to our every day parenting approach and day to day lifestyle.
Forest/Nature School (FNS):
1. Takes place in any outdoor space, including urban greenspace,
playgrounds, forests, creeks, prairies, mountains, shoreline, and tundra.
2. Is a sustained process of regular and repeated sessions in the same outdoor space, supporting children to develop a reciprocal relationship with the Land, and an understanding of themselves as a
part of the natural world.
3. Views children and youth as innately competent, curious, and capable
learners.
4. Is led by educators who share power with learners through play-based, emergent, and inquiry-driven teaching and learning methods.
Child and Nature Alliance of Canada www.childnature.ca
5. Values children’s play - self-directed, freely chosen, intrinsically motivated - in and of itself. FNS programs provide adequate time and space for children and youth to dive
deeply into their play.
6. Views risky play as an integral part of children’s learning and healthy development, and is facilitated by knowledgeable, qualified educators who support children and youth to
co-manage risk.
7. Relies on loose, natural materials to support open-ended, creative play and learning.
8. Values the process as much as the outcome.
9. Prioritizes building reciprocal relationships with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit, who have been learning from this Land since time immemorial.
10. Practices, policies, and programming reflect and prioritize the building of engaged, healthy, vibrant, and diverse communities through consideration of access and equity in our
decisions and actions.

Absolutely amazing.......well done Courtney. Technology is taking over and it breaks my heart seeing it happen. Kids need to be kids. They don't need sugar, junkfood, tablets and cellphones. They need scraped knees, and getting dirty.....play,play,play....... being in nature with friends and family is the best solution❤💯🙏

Lovely to see smiling muddy faces! When they said about play not being valued in our modern society - I totally agree, it's almost as if the modern world is trying to destroy childhood! Play is the most important thing human beings can do - we are born to play!

❤ great job, Courtney! With the push to ‘parentify’ children in many western communities, I’m glad to see people who understand the value of a child simply being a child. Many adults would benefit from this model too! To give the tech stuff a rest for a while is essential tin developing a strong sense of self. Love y’all!!!❤

This is such a cool program and I’m so glad kids have access to this kind of learning through play and exploration now, much more than when I was younger.

Wow, great job. As a child I hate public school and being trapped in 4 brick walls just sitting listening to lectures for 8 hours a day. This would be awesome even 1 day a week I fell that this would be very beneficial in addition to math and English. Though I am definitely way aged out of the program I would’ve enjoyed this so much when I was little.

I'm glad these types of schools are getting more publicity lately. Gives me hope for when I'm raising a kid that there's something different or at least more than traditional and homeschooling options. The Try Guys went to forest school for a day too recently and it was adorable and enlightening.

Hello Eric I have a question how did you figure out ways to homeschool? specifically what would an average homeschooling day would look like for a child? Is it based on interest of the child, or do you have government requirements to meet?
@ThatMountainLife
@ThatMountainLife 11 ай бұрын
The answer is both. We have enrolled in some pretty open ended programs that allow for proof of learning to meet the requirements through play and inquiry. We also aren’t afraid of getting “zeros” or “not completed” on any standardized reporting at this stage. We both want our kids to end up with high school diplomas and for that grade 10-12 would require some more buy-in. But even then, there are some alternative options and online schools that meet the BC curriculum in a variety of ways that more align with our values.
