Almost all metals are hard solid, this makes them impossible to blend with. When a metal is made soft by bringing its temperature close to its melting point and the corresponding shape is called Forging.
When the metal is melted and then shaped, it's called casting.
Different metals retain their hardness differently with different procedures.
A good example of this statement is swords. Iron or steel swords are hardest when they are forge-shaped whereas Bronze swords are the strongest when they are cast. T
Here are two major types of forging process, they are Cold forging and Hot Forging.
Just like the name suggests, the hot forging process is when the metals are plastically deformed above their recrystallisation temperature.
In cold forging the metals are shaped in the ambient temperature, this is usually below their recrystallization temperature. Cold forging is most commonly used to make small metal items like screws and nails.
The biggest advantage of the cold forging process is mass production. But it cannot be used to make complex shapes and also cannot to be used to shape very big objects.
This is where hot forging processes come in. We will talk about the hot forging in our next video.
