0:53 Most of the frost in the freezer, however, usually comes from people leaving the damned freezer door open for too long, allowing warmer outside air, with its relatively higher concentration of water vapour, to get into the freezer. That's also why freezers with faulty door seals usually frost over quickly and regularly.

The temperature is an expression of the /average/ kinetic energy of the molecules. A few are slower, and a few are fast enough to escape as a gas. These ones don't tend to spend a lot of time near the original ice any more, so they don't freeze back into the same body of ice that they came from, but as Henry said, if the air is too cold to hold them, they quickly form frost elsewhere.

I think this happens due to convection current. As we open the freezer door for a period amount of time. The warm air outside tries to replace the cold air inside the freezer which might cause a temperature change inside the freezer hence sublimation. Plus, evaporation occurs in all temperature.

The Maxwell-Boltzman distribution means that even if most of the water molecules have a low kinetic energy, a few have a very high kinetic energy, since temperature is just average kinetic energy of molecules. So only a few can turn into gas, but over time, many will. This is why evaporation happens. Although the sublimation is a cooling process, the freezer ensures that the same temperature is kept, so there are always some molecules with a high enough kinetic energy to sublimate.

I may be wrong but I think there has been at least 1 minutephysics since the start of minute earth. Maybe it has stopped? But I would have thought that if you were starting a new project , you may well put older projects on hold while you try to get your new stuff sorted. Either way I'm happy to get what comes as long as they keep on coming. Great video as ever, thanks.

It's about micro climates. The light in your freezer of stuff that still needs freezing all ad just a little heat to the climate and the freezer element takes that heat away. In that margin there is room to sublimate. It's like water does not need to cook to evaporate. We are talking very small amounts that over time build up to 'ice bergs'.

No, this is due to "latent heat". Temperature doesn't only come from the movement of molecules in a substance; it also can come from energy stored in the polar bonds of the water. Due to the solid water molecules vibrating around, sometimes a water molecule breaks off the others. Over time, the water molecules spread out and since they bump against each other less often they get even cooler than they were in their solid form. Cooling by expansion of a gas is called adiabatic cooling.
@CatalunaLilith
@CatalunaLilith 11 жыл бұрын
it can happen to almost any molecule, although it's harder to reach the right balance of pressure and temperature for most molecules to reach their triple points. it's fairly easy with water, though

The water probably drags out a lot of the molecules that make up the taste, I'd imagine its similar to cooking food, in the sense that the juices leak out and if you drain those off then you're left with something which doesn't taste nearly as strong (I hesitate to say "better" what with subjectivity and all).

actually, freezing or heating only causes to a natural and constant flow between physical states to change its speed. you dont need to boil your wet clothes in order to make them dry. and you dont need to add heat to melt an ice. but doing so you speed things up. in the video case, the speed of water becoming ice is faster than ice becoming water or vapor, so it looks like ice for us. but the very slow process of ice becoming water or gas leaves a trace that we call freezer burn.

The verb is "sublime", not "sublimate". So you meant to say "The ice in the frozen food sublimes." Technically sublimate is a word, but its a noun for the product of sublimation. So for example, when ice sublimes into a water vapor, the vapor is called the sublimate.

Take ice as an example: Air makes the water molecules on the outside of the ice melt just enough for the intermoleculer bonds holding the outside water molecules together to break, causing the outside water molecules to break off from the ice and join the surrounding air. You can't really stop sublimation, unless everything is at absolute zero or the ice is in a vacuum, maybe.
