Homura did nothing wrong! xD Nah but in all honesty Homura is a deeply flawed and amazing character. She literally went full circle from being a regular person than a hero than anti hero and now a villain and its perfectly justifiable. PS: there's also a trailer for the upcoming sequel movie out if you want to do a quick reaction of it.

Homura's wish was always to be "strong enough" to protect Madoka, so even through her time manipulation the timelines to converge on Madoka herself, she is also the center of so much Karmic fate. She may have already completed her wish, but the way wishes are maintained is the way they are granted remains consistent.

So what happened with Homura is that she rewrote the entire universe so that: 1. She has full control over the universe (since the entire universe is now her labyrinth) 2. She split Madoka into two, the law of the cycles (which still exist -- her wish still happened) and Madoka the person, which Homura "planted into the ground". Sayaka and Bebe got caught up with the rewrite and were also planted into the universe. She does this because she believes Madoka never really wanted to sacrifice herself, so Homura "breaks the rules" by letting Madoka have her cake and eat it, negating her sacrifice but keeping the positive outcome. 3. She keeps Kyubey only because curses still exist. Also gl with Magia Record when you get into it, it has a very different feeling from the main series.

Crazy lesbian becoming the devil to rewrite the universe sounds a bit unhinged. Pretty sure no one saw that coming. As much as I love this film, I do agree it didn't do its best job explaining everything. It's very ambitious and complicated, frying your brain to understand this film is the average viewer's experience. 1:17:49 Fort/Da(gone/there) is the film's direct reference to Freud's theory of how people cope with traumatic experiences, the main influence on Homura's character in Rebellion. Fort/Da is a game where Freud's grandson will repeatedly throw away a cotton reel(1:56:39 pink as in Madoka), yelling "Gone(Fort)" when throwing it and "There(Da)" when his mother retrieves it. This is a reaction to his father being sent to the frontline, not being present beside the kid in WW1. There's more to look into regarding Freud and Homura(dreams/nightmares) but Fort/da kinda explains Homura's actions and what mental state she might be in. They also snuck in Nietzsche(Eternal return, eternal feminine) at some point but I'm not familiar with his theories. The Nietzsche read does sound cool tho. Lots of runes in German also hinted at Homura's unstable mental state but that's for the diehard fans going frame by frame trying to make sense of the film to actually catch that. The sequence of Homura turning into a witch is a reference to Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique. The five movements of the symphony are I. Daydreams - passions/ II. A ball/ III. Scene in the country/ IV. March to the scaffold/ V. Dream of a night of the Sabbath. It's about an artist who poisons himself with opium after falling into despair because of his unrequited love for a woman. There's much more to discuss, but I'll leave it here for now. Insane film, not an easy one to react to. No idea what they're gonna do in the next movie, but I'm prepared to watch it like 5 times XD

Great fing comment. I adore deep dives and theory crafting. The imagery and symbolism of Madoka Magica is nigh unending.

@@ErisianRomantic Totally agree, most of the concepts and references were hidden in the visuals. Definitely makes it harder to catch for someone watching with subtitles. Not an expert in music theory but I think some osts are parallel to the exclusive osts in Beginnings/Eternal, like the one where Homura becomes the devil is somewhat an opposite competition compared to the one where Madoka became god.

Madoka's karmic destiny was due to Homura's time shenanigans, but Homura wished "Instead of her protecting me I want to be strong enough to protect her." So everytime Madoka got stronger, Homura also got stronger too, and now she has collected on that.

This movie surpasses all my expectations and the rewatch value after the first time is always gets better no matter no many times! This movie sets a major standards when it comes to anime movies for me. Every single moment is important, makes sense in the story: - Right at the start we are immediately confused when the 4 girls are together, thinking its alternate reality story, but its the continuation as the next 30 minutes gaslights a completely fabricated "Nightmare" system to frustrate us from the "Witch" and "Wraith" system. The Nightmare system and this world created by the labriynth master represents an ideal world where magical don't have to fight one another to purify their soul gems. This all comes into play of the theme Escapism, a perfect fit for a sequel. - The cake song of which each fruit represents and symbolizes each of the girls' personalities, showing it’s the same characters we have known from the original series. - Each interaction of Homura uncovering the mystery of the current world, of which Kyouko is the odd one out as she does not go to their school and is staying with Sayaka, Mami having Bebe as someone by her side, and Madoka being the missing piece Homura needs, representing the world where the girls can always be together with someone that is impossible to reach regarding what happened at the end of the series. As the labyrinth just got unsealed, Mami and Kyouko accept the fact that they will never see Bebe and Sayaka again, that is until Madoka come and get them to join the Magical Girl heaven. Homura, on the other hand, took matters into her own hands. - The flowerfield scene that Madoka braiding Homura's hair, trying to keep Homura from continuing but then the flowers wither as Homura understands Madoka never wanted to leave her normal life "at heart", showing a deeper, darker path, then later when the team rescues even pushes Homura forward with the final decision. - Then the twist that splited the fandom, as it was forshadowed, and from Homura's perspective, I completely see it comes natural, as she is pushed my Madoka's words above, and the line "I won't hesitate anymore", showing that Homura did hesitate to take Madoka's power prior to her decision to doing the experiment, but finally come to conclusion as Madoka gets more involved. As Homura acconmplishes her goal, her obsession with giving Madoka a perfect world to live in comes full circle. This movie does everything right, from maintaining consistency as well as taking risks at every turn, and the final result, remains the most disccussed anime movie after 10 years released. I can't wait to see how the plot unravels as we get closer to the next movie.

to be fair, homura has always been selfish with her love for madoka, basically letting anyone dies as long as madoka are safe. she called it love, but it's more of an obsession to me. so, what taint her soul gem are technically love, but could also be called obsession isn't it? basically, while Madoka sacrifice herself to save everyone, Homura sacrifice everyone to save Madoka. i am still in Homura camp btw.

You said that magical girls release their energy into the universe to prevent the heat death of the universe but actually the heat death is still prevented by kyubey by eating used grief cubes (less powerful version of grief seads dropped by wraiths) which is a way slower process than the one using witches and grief seads.

1:04:30 Actually, the witch that killed Mami may be closer than you think... possibly even eating cake and drinking tea with everyone 😉 1:46:40 Only Sayaka and Bebe/Nagisa (her real name as a human was Nagisa, which she uses as a first-person "pronoun") were sent in by Madoka (along with Madoka herself). They were given Madoka's memories to hold on to so Madoka's secret would be safe, split between them in case something bad happened on the inside. Mami and Kyouko were just the new universe's Mami and Kyouko, who just got roped in by the Clara Dolls (Homura's familiars) Also, Homura's plan was more to hatch as a witch inside of her Soul Gem, hoping that Mami and Kyouko would kill her before anything could be done to Madoka, and, failing that, had her own familiars march her on a funeral procession to a guillotine. The intent was pretty close though. A wild amount of things happen one after another lmao. 2:00:15 There isnt really a concrete answer yet, and ive seen some people give their own explanations, but imo some other possibilities are: 1) that Madoka's own wish was to get rid of Witches before theyre created. She cant exactly do that if Homura is restricting her hands from retrieving her Soul Gem and/or leaving to go retrieve another Magical Girl before Homura's barrier expands, and so in order to keep the wish in-tact, human-Madoka was separated from the Law of Cycles, which then Homura took control over, trapping it in her broken Soul Gem, which reformed into a crown piece called as her "Dark Orb" 2) Homura's original wish was specifically "I wish to redo my meeting with Kaname-san, but instead of always being the one that needs protecting, I want to be strong enough to protect her." Her Madoka is, coming to save Homura *again*, and Homura can't exactly protect Madoka if Madoka is a concept endangered by the Incubators, who would have likely tried their plan again, and so the universe did some "correcting." 3) Theoretically, Kyubey may have used original-timeline Madoka in a similar way as to how he used Sayaka in the anime timeline, as a means to push Homura into making a wish, creating a perpetual multi-universal energy-making machine. As someone else said, such a thing could've impacted Homura's Karmic potential along the way as much as Madoka's. 4) There may be an answer in the manga arc that acts as a bridge between the anime and Rebellion titled "Wraith Arc" 5) the power of lesbian love can rewrite universes 2:14:05 Madokami came down to take Homura with her to the Law of Cycles (bringing a whole parade with her; Homura got some special treatment lol, being something "so important" to Madoka 🤭) What changed? Well, Madoka exists for one. Sayaka and Nagisa/Bebe are alive. Kyouko goes to school, having previously been a homeless orphan, and she can be with Sayaka, who can be with Kyouko, Hitomi, and Kyousuke. Mami isnt alone anymore, because she has Nagisa/Bebe, who can now eat all the cheese and cake she wants. And Magical Girls still dont turn into Witches, since as Homura said, Wraiths still exist, and she can even dismiss Sayaka's witch Oktavia. The only "witch"-like being seems to be Homura herself, who is (despite what she wants you to think) more benign and has more control over her actions than a typical witch. Imstead, the curse energy produced by Magical Girls transforming into Witches seems to now be processed by the Incubators themselves. The world also seems to be somewhat tied to Homura's mental state, with the moon cut in half and the missing Luminous chair (the reason the recap OP is important lol) possibly representing her separation from Madoka. Why did Homura do it? In the flower field, Madoka (who was missing not just her memories but her obligations of Concepthood) told her how unhappy she would be if she were to never be able to be with her friends and family again. As a concept, Madoka was unable to interact with anyone, unless they were a Magical Girl about to become a Witch. She couldnt be with them while they were alive, and she couldnt be with her family at all, unable to grow up and have that drink with her mom she promised in episode 6. Hearing that Madoka ended up unhappy with her fate, and seeing her arms metaphorically scarred by the despair she absorbs when taking in the souls of Magical Girls, Homura brings her down from concepthood, to, as she says, "create a world where [Madoka] can be happy." She couldnt stand Madoka continuing to sacrifice herself for her over and over again, as Homura's original wish stated, "instead of being always in need of protection, i want to be strong enough to protect her." (In fact, the happiest Homura has ever been were timeline 2 and in her Labyrinth before she started feeling off, both instances where she and Madoka were on even ground, protecting and helping *each other*) As Madoka's mom said in episode 6, "If the only way to help was to do something drastic, would you do it? [Said later: "The more responsibilities, the less mistakes you're allowed to make"] Your friend is trying so hard to do right, that someone's got mistake on her behalf. If you're stuck at a dead-end with no other options left, sometimes doing the wrong thing might do the most good. She might not get it right away, she might even hate you. I warned you, it might not be a happy ending, but what's better? To give up on your friend, or be misunderstood by her?" I also like to compare this situation to "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" by Ursula K Le Guin And with all that said, this still very clearly isnt a good situation either. Homura is wracked with immense guilt for going against Madoka's wish (even if the sole intent was for Madoka's happiness and she didnt doom Magical Girls to becoming Witches again), to the point of calling herself the Devil and incarnation of evil, and the world seems to be tied to her mental state to an extent. Where this leaves us? The Concept Movie (available on KZfaq) released in 2015ish points to some themes, along with the more recent official trailer, and there is that Wraith Arc manga to explain some things (namely what Wraiths actually are lmao) Oh, i almost forgot: Homura did nothing wrong! 😈

Why is Homura so powerful? Since it was Homura that tied all the timelines together trying to save Madoka then they are also all tied to herself. Likely it is the process of changing from one form to another that taps into all that power so while becoming a magical girl unleased it for Madoka then becoming a witch unleased it for Homura and allowed it her to use that power to become something else. One key to harnessing that power is knowing it is there and consciously calling on it. Madoka called on that power with her wish that changed the universe and Homura called on it when she should have changed into a witch but became something more powerful and changed the universe again. The timeline is an extension of the timeline at the end of the last episode, there is a teaser at the end of it that Homura is changing when she grows 'wings' with a similar coloring as her sould gem when she changed into a demon. The other girls are alive as they were there when she recreated the universe and were dragged into it, even Bebe is there in the same form she had just prior to Homura changing. We should get more info with the next movie to be released later this year.

I believe that what Homura did was a matter of circumstance, not power. Godoka was physically materialized in the world thanks to the recently destroyed barrier of the incubators. The problem is that Homura internally was no longer a witch since it was not curses of despair that corrupted her Soulgem (and Madoka can only eliminate witches). And then she has the powers to manipulate memories, which is what she used to pull the individual Madoka back into existence. This caused a paradox like the one Madoka created by eliminating the witches, so to restore the hole in the universe, Homura evolved into being able to keep a part of Madoka existing, as well as the Law of Cycles. But homura is not a "principle" like Madoka, who must exist on a higher plane. Madoka can permanently alter the laws of the universe on a "multiversal" scale. Now homura created a barrier in which she can alter this main universe where she existed and now Madoka exists. In short, she implemented the incubators plan using the tools she had and the circumstances, the difference is that she did it thinking about what she believes is best for Madoka.

Why did Homura choose to do so? > Kyubey might start experimenting on another soul gem, leading to the end of the Law of Cycle. > Madoka had so much scars on her hand which could be seen when she reached out her hand to Homura at the end of the witch battle, showing she’s having a tough time fulfilling her wish and duty. > Madoka told Homura she couldn’t bear to leave her friends and family even if she had no other choice during the flowerbed scene. How did Homura do so? (possible explanations) > In her original wish, she stated that she wanted to redo her meeting with Madoka and “become strong enough to protect her” > If Kyubey succeeds in their experiments, magical girls would become witches, thereby revoking Madoka’s wish. The universe is doing its part to uphold the wish. > There’s another explanation in the wraith arc Is Homura evil? > Not really, Homura was calling herself a devil/demon because she had to go against Madoka and pull her down. The only being that would go against god is a devil/demon. > In the scene with Sayaka towards the end, Homura was only teasing her. The minions/clara dolls were throwing tomatoes at Homura, criticizing how bad she was at playing a devil’s role. Is it a good ending? > The whole universe is altered. > Kyubey is under Homura’s control. > Everyone lives happily in the new altered universe. > Except for Homura who has to constantly keep everything under control. > Personally, yes Side notes: > The story was not set in an alternate timeline/universe. > When Homura became a witch, she didn’t try to “get out” but she intended to sacrifice herself to stop the experiment. > If you’re wondering when Mami got her yellow ribbon on Homura’s leg before their epic confrontation, it was very shortly after Homura asked for more tea.

People say Homura is being selfish and maybe she is but If you think about her perspective and the reason why she became a magical girl, repeating and going back in time to save Madoka you would understand why she did this. Like imagine trying to save the most important person doing years and years then you fail. In this scene Homura realized letting Madoka go was wrong 1:21:50 I know that was Madoka decision to sacrifice herself and we should respect that but who actually want to die and go far away from the people you care? This is my opinion but I feel like Madoka doesn't have choices because that was the only way to save others girls. I mean Madoka want to help others people because shes kind and altruist but that doesn't mean she isn't lonely or scared leaving her family or friends so it does make sense why Homura did this even though Im sure Homura know what she did is not good (after she became demon she always have a depressed expression). Homura want Madoka to be safe and happy surrounded by her family and friends. So that means Homura did nothing wrong!

FYI Sayaka and Bebe were there to restore Madoka's memories of being a god, because of witch Homara's memory rewrite and the fact they didn't want Kubey to discover Madoka's secrets.

Instead of assuming Homura is stronger than Madokami and overpowered her in the end, I like to think that it's just the manifestation of her original wish, which was partly to be strong enough to protect Madoka. After the flower scene, Homura was convinced that she made a huge mistake by letting Madoka sacrifice herself as it's unbearable even for her, so Homura considers that Madoka still needs to be saved after all. So, it makes sense to me that in that instant where Madokami was closest to the curse-blackened soul gem, Homura managed to rip a slight part of Madokami to retrieve and "save" the human part of Madoka. Well, even just this small part happened to mess things up and forced Nagisa (Bebe) and Sayaka on Earth, and even that human part of Madoka is still very well a God. The balance of this new world seems to be pretty hazardous because even asking a casual "How does it feel to be back after so long?" is enough for Madokami to almost manifest and put an end to Homura's new world. As for Kyubei his role seems to have changed, and like Homura said he is apparently taking all the curses in the world upon himself instead of the magical girls. The trailer for Walpurgisnacht Rising is on youtube, you might want to give this a watch. You might feel like you were completely lost, but I saw way, way worse. You've actually stopped to think many times and understand which timeline we were in exactly, why there are no wraiths or why Madoka is there, so you've done pretty well. Quite a bit of people are completely lost the whole movie and give up on getting what's going on until the Isolation Field thing is revealed. You've even tried to understand the different perspectives on how to resolve the situation, which can get pretty confusing as there are three (Kyubei wants Madokami to manifest in the isolation field, Homura wants to die as a witch before then, and Sayaka & Nagisa want to save Homura anyway while also preventing Kyubei from interfering (I think?)) Not getting everything during the first watch is totally understandable, so good job. Anyway, thank you for reacting to this series. Now you have the spin-off (which may or may not have cameos)!

Rebellion - just who rebelled against who? One may ask! It's Homura rebelling against Madokami at the end of the day... I guess. - 15:42: Ah... you immediately recognized the witch, Charlotte, who beheaded Mami to be this one. I did not notice that before reading the comments here. - 16:07: *laughs at your confusion* - 23:38: Yeah, this movie came out in 2013, so yeah, after that Maya Calendar thing in 2012. - 26:17: You certainly went a bit too far with your guess there, didn't you? Calling big wraiths nightmares when it was never directly mentioned to be that. - 27:46: Didn't notice that either that Kyubey didn't talk up to that one moment later on. - 29:56: I will say that I am glad to have seen this all happy version of these characters even for just this short time and even if it it was fake. It's how one would probably believe for Madoka to go if it was a classical magical girl series. - 31:12: Bebe's existence confused me so much when first watching this, but like... in retrospective, it makes sense story-wise. - 31:38: That is separate from the day before. - 35:44: An interesting way to read that transformation... yeah. Though... of course wrong point to look at, I guess. - 36:00: You notice how Sagiita Luminis (her theme) is used for Madoka in this movie as a leitmotif decently often, yeah? Unlike in the TV series. - 36:27: "Puella Magi". The first time I actually heard the Latin term being said in the series itself and not just in the title. - 40:16: Absolutely. The rhythmic chanting of all five was so adorable and cool in its own way. - 49:13: I notice it less with Madoka with the production quality in comparison to the TV series to be fully honest. - 52:10: Considering the ending of this movie... is "Is it so bad to live in a dream?" more... ominous than it sounds at this moment? - 59:14: Yeah... same for me. In retrospective... I now know that someone actually mentioned Kyouko being their favorite character to me using a GIF from her from that ritual. - 59:47: LOL, I did not even realize that Mami's ribbon was seen in that sequence for a split second - teasing that she anticipated the danger. Very clever. - 1:09:00: That was such a wild move by Homura, indeed. - 1:09:55: And then the backfire by Mami is even wilder. - 1:19:29: Now... after the comments... as a German, I hear it too: "Gott ist tot" - said by these little things. (God is dead.) I think it refers to Madoka there? - 1:22:26: And that's the reason Madokami couldn't bear to erase Homura's memories in the end... but... that was a grave mistake by her too. - 1:22:39: And those... are Madoka's most honest feelings without knowing why she did it in the first place... and Homura took it as a sign that she'd have never done it if not for the gravity of that situation back then. - 1:25:10: Still the original Madoka OP playing in that bar Kyouko likes to be in, ha! - 1:31:54: And that's why Homura also made a giant and grave mistake in telling the incubators about the witches from the past universe rules. Because it lead to the plot of this movie happening. - 1:40:30: The birth of Homulilly, Homura's witch form. - 1:46:50: Only Sayaka and Bebe. Mami was let in on the secret when Bebe took on her human form (Nagisa) and explained it to her off-screen. - 1:48:44: Sayaka and Kyouko forever. Even after death. - 1:48:48: Ah... Nagisa does actually say her name though the subtitles don't include it for some reason. I hear it in the line. - 1:55:51: When one thought it was finally over... then Homura came and said no. Splitting Madokami apart into a part where her human essence is in and the part which is the Law of the Cycle... - 1:56:37: Homura made the entire universe hers to rule over as the ultimate force - even successfully going against the powers of a god in Madokami. - 1:58:25: All of this... for love, Homura... the emotion Homura ultimatively can only feel for Madoka and will even sacrifice the world for if it means that Madoka can be happy. - 1:58:55: The birth... of Demon Homura. - 2:00:23: Indeed... the only two beings in the universe with that much karmic destiny... are Madoka *and* Homura - one being the central point of many timelines and the other being the reason for those timelines to even exist. - 2:02:53: And since all the wraiths can never be gone... that means never for destroying the universe in Homura's eyes. The same can be said about being an enemy to Sayaka. - 2:04:06: Day to day life as in... all five of them will continue to live on as if none of this had ever happened and should be friendly and friends with each other. Essentially... this is that perfect and yet... beyond the obvious matters still... not stable world Homura wants to live in with Madoka. And... unwillingly, also with the others. - 2:07:16: The decently subtle purple glow of the mini form of Homura's new crown. - 2:08:30: In either case... of what's better for all... this shows that this new order is totally fragile and will eventually break. - 2:08:47: Yeah, Madokami existing fully is the best scenario for the entire universe... but... this here is how Homura thinks it's the best for Madoka herself judging by her "honest thoughts" in the flowerbed scene earlier. - 2:10:47: Another manifestation of this world being extremely fragile, I can assume... in the moon missing one half. - 2:11:33: Is that fear - a human emotion - I see in Kyubey's eyes? - 2:14:16: Yeah, Madokami wanted to do for Homura as she did for all other magical girls as the Law of the Cycles... bringing her to her fated end, but... Homura did defy that fate. - 2:08:58 / 2:14:40: Since she was split up... both the concept and the mortal form do now exist... however the split up was imperfect as human Madoka still has some of the powers of Madokami inside of her just waiting to burst out. - 2:16:04: Definitely not the exact same... with Homura still existing as a person and Madokami both existing as a god and as a human now... it's certainly complicated. - 2:16:57: I think... this timeline is similarily to the fake one at the beginning of this movie an almost perfect one with everyone alive and living out their normal days... - 2:17:26: I see... so take your time. - 2:18:37: Homura took what Madoka said to her in the flowerbed scene as her choosing not to be this ultimate god if she really had a choice in the first place. - 2:19:34: The base lead staff behind this movie (as well as the new one) is basically the same as for the TV series with the exception of the Director and Chief Director swapping positions for the movies. - 2:23:52: I felt like... I understand a bit more than you in my first watch, but of course far from all. - Even in this movie... there's one familiar key animator to me in Megumi Ueda (上田 恵未) who I recognize from Pokémon - albeit only as 2nd Key Animator there.

I highly recommend rewatching this one at least once more, in your own time, whenever before the next movie comes out. It's a very plot-heavy movie and there's more you'll understand watching it once more (but the more, the merrier). It's honestly difficult to assume why Homura had such an impact on Madoka's law that she was able to overwrite or at least suppress it. But I suppose it all links back to "Magical Girls defy all logic", which was a line that Kyubey said in I believe episode 9. Madoka's wish came from a prayer fuelled by her karmic destiny, Homura's despair came from her overload of deep human emotions that have unnaturally stacked over dozens of years of time loops that eventually fuelled her incomprehensible desire of saving Madoka from the fate she put upon herself, and the Kyubeys meddling with her soul gem probably added to that insatiable feeling she was bearing more than she already had. Madoka's choice to let Homura remember her, even though she could have predicted how much it would burden her, was probably the worst mistake she could've done. Just imagine you're the only person in the world remembering someone, even a universe, that is a mere concept, as legitimate as a fictional story you came up with, that cannot be verified and has no realistic foundation except your own memories. You will eventually think those memories are made up, driving you further insane, because you don't know what to believe anymore. It's impossible to imagine how much pain Homura has gone through. And I wonder if you're gonna react to the Madoka Magica concept movie? I'm not sure if that 4 minutes-ish is worth a video of its own, unless you talk and analyse it a lot, but maybe watching it back to back with the trailer of the upcoming movie would probably be very interesting, since the concept movie predates the upcoming movie for *8 years* and we're not 100% sure how much of the concept movie will matter in the canon of the Madokaverse. After Rebellion came out we didn't know for a very long long time that a 4th movie would even be an option, I saw the movie for the first time about late 2015, early 2016, so I haven't been waiting for this sequel for as long as fans from the start had, but not knowing whether there would be more or not was painful!

Madoka: "I will sacrifice myself for the entire world." Homura: "I will sacrifice the entire world for you." Rebellion is a movie that always seems to fry everyones brain on the first watch, but it's a serious masterpiece. There are so many details, symbols and metaphors such as the familiars at 1:19:23 shouting "Gott ist tot!" in German which literally translates to "God is dead.". A clear reference to Madoka and the fact that Homura is / will be rebelling against her. Or the flowers at 1:29:26 which look like spider lilies to me. They are usually associated with death and considering Homura literally wants to die inside the labyrinth to save Madoka it's again really beautifully done. But there are tons of less obvious symbols/metaphors as well. 4:06 "...posted by lesbian demon." -LMAO the best spoiler without context!! I actually laughed aloud when you read that without knowing the context. 2:13:14 Sayaka and Bebe were there to hold Madokas memories/powers (not Homuras) to be able to keep Kyubey from figuring stuff out. 2:14:11 Madoka was trying to fulfill her role as the "Law of the cycle" taking Homura away to the afterlife, which is why she was reaching for Homuras Soul-Gem. 2:14:33 Homura split the person "Madoka" from the "Law of the cycle" (though seemingly in an imperfect way). So as far as I know the "Law of the cycle" now doesn't have Madokami to look after it, but does still exist. 2:15:50 I don't think they are on the same powerlevel, but Homura became a type of antithesis to Madoka in the sense that she is willing to sacrifice even Madokas own wish for what Homura believes would make Madoka live a happy life. She is a rule-breaker so to speak. Defying the the god Madoka, messing up the world all for the sake of a single persons happiness. However it seems she realizes Madoka will one day break free of this false life, which is why Homura says Madoka will eventually become her enemy... something Homura is willing to accept for the sake of giving Madoka the chance to be happy (even if temporary). 2:18:25 Homura believes Madoka is just putting up a front and is suffering internally while acting as the "Law of the cycle". In the scene on the hill (Madoka braiding Homuras hair) Madoka not having her full memories tells Homura that she could never go to a place so far away where she couldn't be with her friends/family and that it would hurt her way too much to do so. Homura interprets this as Madoka being honest and "realizes" that Madoka must be hurting in her current god form. Homura would be willing to overrule Madokas wish to prevent that. This at least seems like the crucial point of that scene to me. The way I would describe Homuras actions is selfishly selfless. She is wishing for someone else's happiness but is willing to trample on everyone/everything to achieve it. The fact that Kyubey looks so miserable and despaired at the end seems to suggest that he actually can feel emotions now, which as you might remember is just a mental disease in the Incubator race. Homura literally traumatized a being incapable of feeling emotions to the point it broke him. x,D Some of what I wrote are theories (not confirmed) but that's at least that's my perspective on things. Can't wait for Magia Record as that show introduces some INTERESTING concepts into the Madoka world. Thank you for the amazing journey so far. Looking forward to whatever comes next!

Without her memories, in the Flowerfield scene Madoka said that she'd never sacrifice herself because she can't bear leaving the people she loves, so... Homura did nothing wrong. 😈 . . . . . /jk (She definitely did something wrong, specifically, in Ep 12 she confided in Kyubey about Witches, thus giving them ideas about controlling Law of Cycles) ...Also, I'm leaning towards the theory that if after breaking Kyubey's barrier Homura left with Madokami (dies), instead of pulling what she did here, the Incubators would be free to make another attempt at undermining the Law of Cycles. Whereas in the New World, Kyubey was made to contain curses, and seems to be suffering under heavy...mental disorder (as he had once put it), thus can't get up to his usual... shenanigans.

Homrua’s time loop prevented herself and Madoka from becoming witches. That power alone rewrote the laws of nature itself. She became just as powerful, due to an overlap of timelines. Homura’s wish became her curse. All that despair turned her into something worse than a witch.

Sayaka wasn't there because she was an illusion. She was there because Madoka sent Bebe and Sayaka to hold onto Madoka's memories so she could fool Kyubey.

At the end of tv series, Sayaka and Bebe (the witch that ate Mami up) got together with Goddess Madoka after dying peacefully instead of becoming witches for Madoka’s wish. In this movie, Madoka, Sayaka, and Bebe got human’s appearance and sneaked into Homura’s labyrinth to save Homura. They knew that QB was waiting for Madoka to control her power, so Madoka left her own power and memories apart from herself and entrusted to her assistants, so that she can acts like old usual Madoka, an ordinary little girl, and can deceive QB. “Separate memories and leave to someone else for some purpose and get back when need” is from an episode of Japanese masterpiece manga, “Devilman”. The author says he was influenced by it in many ways.

Ah, I still remember when I first saw the movie... they really got me in the first quarter or so. I thought they were pulling a Macross, i.e. reboot a good series into a bad movie, that rewrites the canon. It seemed neutered, with less interesting enemies, long transformation sequences for the magical girls (which I don't like) and everything being just too nice, to the point I was a moment away from just dropping it, but then it started to unravel and having fallen for them in the early part made experiencing that much better. Rather than Godoka, the fanbase majorily calls her Madokami (kami = god in Japanese). Remember when, Homura was shown bound up in the strings of fate, the same way Madoka was depicted the previous episode, to symbolize all the different timelines conneciting and binding her, and thus increasing her power? My interpretation of this is, that both of them had their karmic weight increased by the resets. Madoka, because Homura was doing it because of her, and Homura, because she was the one doing it. And thus it would stand to reason that Homura could create a similarly insane wish as Madoka, if she hadn't already been a magical girl and thus not being granted a wish anymore. The moment a magical girl falls to despair and becomes a witch, all the energy is released, but by that time they have already lost their conscious mind, so they aren't able channel it into a wish. And with the Law of Cycles in place, magical girls never reached that point anymore. But with their meddling, the incubators created a situation, where Homura could not only reach the point of transforming into a grief seed, but did so with her consciousness intact, to at least some degree, and thus she was able to repeat Madoka's feat or rewriting the universe's rules. And just to clarify: The Law if Cycles is still in place, and the world still has Wraith. Homura didn't change any of that. But she broke off a small piece of the Law of Cycles, the piece that contained Madoka's personality and incernated it into the world, plus bringing back a couple of dead people, so they can live out a normal life, and essentially enslaving the incubators to her will, so they would still fulfill the task of creating magical girls, but wouldn't be able to do anything other than this own task ever again. Not really a full-on demon or devil, but Homura always had a rather low opinion of herself.

If you closely watch the scene inside the bubbles at the beginning of the movie, you could see God Madoka reaching Homura to save her, then the door closes implying that Homura's salvation was stopped by Kyubey's experiment, trapping Homura inside the door along with Madoka.

Homura's pretty powerful. In the Homura against Mami fight, Homura didn't use any of her full new powers that weren't shown in the anime; she can easily take everyone against her alone (except for Madoka in God form, probably). Karmic power is due to Madoka's fate, which is also attached to Homura. Most of the confusion is because after Anime Episode 12, there's a whole manga series about Homura's journey in the new world with dark adventures, new powers, new abilities, and more that evolved into many other magical things, and the sequel to that Homura manga series is this movie, Rebellion. So we do understand the confusion, since we usually tell streamers to watch the movie directly because reading the manga first would erase most of the "surprises" of the movie. About the world, Madoka in her human form said that she wouldn't be happy being separated from her dear ones, and so it made Homura (who was about to explode as a witch) think that she did bad by allowing her to become a god, and so her new goal when her Soul Gem reached its limit was to at least fulfill what she did "wrong," making herself the "villainess" as the concept of "evil" but instead of fighting against them she created a world where Madoka can at least be happy with her dear ones. Homura said, ""After all the wraiths have been destroyed, perhaps I will. When that time comes, I suppose I can be your enemy." but it is impossible to have a world without wraiths or negative feelings from people, is like, "I'll fight you when the human race reaches world peace and no human can feel negative emotions anymore.". Never. Homura calls herself a demon, but is more like a yandere bodyguard whose last will is a safe place for Madoka and everyone around her, Homura can't wish for more since her Soul Gem is too tainted so I'm curious what will happen in the next movie. Defeating Homura would mean that Bebe, Sayaka and Madoka will die again while Mami and Kyoko would no longer be safe and die not so long after. Everyone who is currently a magical girl now has to decide if to sacrifice their lives for the sake of future magical girls (make Homura erase her spell) or live happily, but future magical girls won't have Madoka's blessing. Homura modifying the Universe for peace in their life, Madoka modying the universe for other girls life. It's easier to look at Homura as a villain since her magic is dark and her soul is soiled, so she can think clearly and is suffering, but I think it's a bit unfair for the girls to get angry at her while enjoying Homura's world. Anyway, the best outcome would be for everyone to make a plan for how to clean Homura's soul. I think it is pretty easy; Madoka just needs to kiss and segggs Homura, and done since is love the feeling in Homura's soulgem, but stories usually take a more dramatic path to make plot twist and things like that. ❤
