In this episode, I'm joined by a very special guest... my mother! Together, we try out one of her childhood favourites - Hakka Mee. Then we visit a hidden Hakka spot in Holland Village, as well as try to cook our own version!
Have you ever had Hakka Mee before? Let's talk in the comments!
We visited:

I'm hakka, 4th gen originally from HK. Most Chinese in UK are hakka, as well as many in North America, West Indies, etc. Proud of my heirtage, especially food and dialect. We've many illustrious ancestors in Chinese history. And Keanu Reeves is also part Hakka (his grandma 100% Hakka)!

A correction:- Hakka is not an English word. There are 2 Hakka words there, ie. Hak = guest and Ka = family. Therefore a "family of guests". Historically Hakka were refugees from the north, escaping the slaughters by the mongols. They travelled down south in family units. That's why they are called that way by the southern locals.

Sarah, stop bullying your mom - especially when at times she appears to be daydreaming 🤭. But seriously, you two are a great duo! My background is rather similar to your mom's - i.e. I'm Hokkien on my father's side, and Hakka on my mother's side and I speak beside these two dialects fluently, Cantonese too on the basis that I grew up in a Cantonese community in Malaysia. Having said that, I've now been living in the UK for decades and can still speak all the Chinese dialects today. Can your mom remember the famous Hakka dish called, "Jar Nyuk" (translated loosely, 'fried meat' (pork)? BTW the nearest equivalent to "jialat" (Hokkien i.e. 'lee hai') I can think of, to Hakka is "lee hoi".

Wow, it looks like same as the Yan Mian(腌面) in Meizhou, Guangdong, China. Meizhou is a typical Hakka region in China.

The real Hakka "Ngyung Taeo Foo" must have chopped grilled or roasted dried squid. Dried squid created more umami favor.

Nice Vid. I am Hakka, and your mom's pronunciations is pretty close to what my family speaks. Going to try your recipe out for myself and see what the family think. Thanks.

You and your mum are absolutely hilarious! The Hakka cemetery bit was very interesting, I have passed by it many times but never knew its significance. Absolutely can't wait for the next episode!
