Before China communist liberated Xinjiang in 1955.. lamas and Dalai Lama owns all the land and 95% people are their slaves for generations. 95% people are illiterate and most could not write their names. The lamas exiled with truckloads of gold to India and USA. They paid huge protection money in India to get to USA. Of course their children hated China and got some terrorists to do bad in Xinjiang. In the last 40 years, the new generation there has free education to finish high school. As minority people, they are given easy entrance to universities (very hard in China). Chinese government organized large number of highly educated volunteers and businesses to develop Xinjiang. Today you can see it is safe, clean and peaceful.... Lots of tourists from cities inside China, providing good jobs and good life. Old people now can retire, play cards and exercise in very nice parks and open squares. One thing that is disputable from what you've mentioned is that people in Xinjiang can work anywhere. Because there are other Uyghur KZfaqrs who said they used to live in other cities outside of Xinjiang province. However ever since 2016-2017 where re-education camp stories came out, I am not really sure whether they can still do that. And yes I am pretty shocked that anything sharp requires registration and they are tied to a place, I didn't know that. Although to be fair, in the past there are terrorism activities that happened in the region where many ethnic Han were murdered, and there was an ISIS music on KZfaq singing in Mandarin. But yes, treating everyone like a prisoner or a terrorist is discrimination. I think China and India are pretty similar in this aspect where there is a lack of political awareness that discrimination is wrong.
