There were some generalizations in the video that I know some learned people will catch. I do like parts of sport fencing and many Eastern Martial arts, I was just talking about terminology.
In this video I try to explain some things about HEMA or Historical Fencing. There are many outlooks and many systems, this mainly showed longsword sources and info.

Are the swords sharpened and lethal? I know you mentioned being able to purchase blunt weapons but are there any competitions or practices where sharpened weapons are used?

No they are all blunt in sparring. There are cutting competitions though, cutting tatami with sharps. And you can practice with water bottles etc
