I thought I had run out of 2d Metroid games to play. It never occurred to me to turn to ROM hacks. Thank you for bringing them to my attention.

I was put off with samus's color scheme but didn't realize it's because they changed her helmet from red to blue. Strange how one change can make something so familiar seem so alien.

I have to assume the release of Metroid dread made this video spike in algorithmic popularity.

As much as I enjoy the way tourian looks in this remake, I feel like it slightly removes the original atmosphere. The reason why tourian made me feel so uncomfortable, was because of how different it felt compared to the rest of the game. While the rest of the game was organic and full of life, tourian was empty cold and sterile. Changing some areas of tourian to look more bloody and organic, while more uncomfortable to look at, in the context of the rest of the game feels much more familiar. Like at this point we're familiar with organic and fleshy rooms. While we're not familiar with chrome sci-fi palaces. Meaning a chrome sci-fi palace would be much more uncomfortable than a fleshy organic room. That's just my opinion tho 🤷

That story premise seems ultra mid-2000's edgelord as fuck, but damn if the actual game here doesn't look really cool.

I’ve been playing this recently and I can’t get enough. Like you said I tend to not know where to go but the exploration is what makes this fun to me as it does in every Metroid game.

Hey Stunt, I just wanted to let you know that I just found a hidden room in Brinstar, in the room with Dachora just before Kraid. I Shinesparked upward where Dachora goes, and accessed a room with a Chozo statue holding some lantern-looking item that I can't pick up, shoot, or blow up with anything, nor does it show anything unusual on the X-Ray Visor. Also, there is some luminescent green moss in the background right next to the item that read "OMЯN WUZ HERE". I have found no mention of this anywhere online, nor does it show up on the map after I've accessed it. It's so weird, and cool! I never expected it! Whoever you know, let them in on this little tidbit. If you have any info, I'd sure appreciate it!

Wow. The quality of this video had me taken aback. This was excellent. Hyper Metroid takes me back.

I loved this hack. Two more I loved are VITALITY with a story that'll close up your throat, wonderful areas and entirely new bosses, one so creepy that it made me shudder, with a lovely reference at the end. The other one is Cryogenesis because it not only has nice texture work and an engaging world, but in a sense, it has double the world. Certain areas you'll notice hatches and rooms and items in the background and if you find certain doors, you can "shift" into those parallel areas where the area you just came from becomes the background. I don't know if this was done before or is it specific to Cryogenesis, but I found it to be amazing.

Another fantastic video, very informative! I'd tried playing Hyper a few years back, when I was still not really into even vanilla Super Metroid or Project Base. Needless to say, I was overwhelmed by the vast scale of the world and how easy it is to fall into the "where do I go?" trap. Now that I've got some serious experience with PB under my belt, perhaps it's time I gave it another shot...

Once you know the map and item locations, Hyperion Metroid is very fun to speed run. As for the story, I'm firmly convinced RealRed was trolling by combining "loss" and the worst parts of Other M.

The only thing i disliked about this romhack is the fact that around the time where you should be getting super missiles/power bombs theres just so many dead ends, you go to a path and after a couple of minutes you find a dead end with no reward for going walking around for all that time, its a bit of a dissapointment and it happened a lot That and golden torizo (which i killed a lil early since i had the option to do it) and well, i ended up in a dead end, again, with no reward for the effort, and even after i got more new stuff, it felt like killing golden torizo was entirely unnecesary TL;DR: it was annoying to recieve no reward at all after going thru a path for several minutes because its not locked from the beggining but rather almost at the end of it (Note that i tried not to sequence break at all)

Definitely one of the best Super Metroid Romhacks. Right up there with it is Metroid Super Zero Mission. After just finishing Metroid Dread, I'd like to come back to Hyper Metroid after I kind of forget how great Metroid Dread was. Metroid Dread improves upon Super Metroid almost in the same way that Super Metroid improved upon Metroid on the NES, taking what was good about the predecessor and improving just about everything about it and adding to things in excellent ways.

I remember me and my buddy played this on discord. He loves super. Unsurprisingly, he loved the gameplay but absolutely laughed his ass off at the story and suggested to hack the game to change the title to Super Metriod: Loss and the hackers name to Bum Tickley.

Started playing it on my modded 3DS a few days ago. Despite the overly edgy story and death screens, the level design is surprisingly almost on par with the original game, and even surpassing it in some areas. While I originally didn’t like Samus’s new power suit colors since it looked so weird, I thought it was pretty cool when I got the varia suit, and the gravity suit… man I adore the gravity suit palette. This game makes you work for the upgrades and doesn’t give them out as frequently as Super, which can be frustrating as you come to so many dead ends. But the game being so open-ended is exactly what I wanted more of in Super! There’s so many ways to get to where you need to go and different orders for everything, it’s insane! My biggest criticisms are that after awhile, you begin to get lost and find dead ends all the time (takes forever to find the power bombs ugh) and the bosses are way too hard for some reason. If it wasn’t for that and the story, I’d almost say this game is BETTER than Super. Heck, I’d say the controls already far surpass Super’s. That Morph Ball animation is incredibly satisfying. Really love this one and can’t wait to play more Metroid ROM hacks in the future!

Love the PB movement. Love the exploration and the level design. Love the Tourian gate system. Love the ammo system. Biggest criticism is the story 😵‍💫 and to be fair that's only like 30 seconds at the start of the game. Overall, liked it a lot. IMO this is one of the few pre-2019 hacks worth playing these days (not counting half-hacks / vanilla+ stuff) - there's just been so much good stuff since COVID.

This hack was amazing! i love it and i have completed maybe 12 awesome Super Metroid Hacks...Other really good ones were Redesign, Super Zero Mission, Eris, Phazon etc...

cool stuff, i remember trying this hack ages ago when i first found metroidconstruction, and despite how fun it was to play i couldn't stand the story elements and i deleted the damn thing. might give it another go sometime soon but man that's gonna be tough lol

Hyper Metroid is an excellent rom hack but I’m so fucking tired of people saying anyone can play it when really its only for hardcore players, I also find it incredibly creepy how Samus’s clothes completely fall off when she dies

PROS; Ammo system: -missiles no longer becomes obsolete once you've gathered enough super missile tanks. -drop rate increases for each ammo-based weapon you obtain, means that having more ammo doesn't mean that having to grind more. -ammo stations refill all ammo. -grinding for specific drops is no longer an issue. -picking up ammo expansions feels more rewarding since it's for all three weapons and not just one. Gate system: -Makes the player more aware of their surroundings, since these are essential to progress. -Takes notes from Prime 3 of making it possible to collect the majority along the way. -Having the 4 remaining gates be blocked by the final power-up. Giving you more to do and fixing the "no game left to use the last power-up" issue. -Using them as an excuse to create more puzzle-rooms. Other: -Everything Project added to the table. -Being built on top of Project and having the levels designed around it. -The map shows the doors. -Recolored sprites. Giving it a different look and feel from Super. -Tougher bosses and new enemy variants to spice up the gameplay. -Finally combining all 5 beams. -Massive world to explore. -Shortcuts everywhere. Making it easy to travel from A to B. -A bunch of other new things added, that makes it feel like you're playing Super Metroid 2 and not just another hack. CONS; -Audio and music is still the same*. (*This goes more out to all Super Metroid hacks. Super Metroids soundtrack is fantastic, but I'm getting tired of it after hearing it again and again after hack after hack. Can anyone out there make a different/new soundtrack and have all future hacks use that one instead, just for variety sake?) -The map still doesn't say if the item is collected or not, and some doesn't even show on the map. This made it take an hour longer for me to 100% for the first time, because the map didn't tell me where the last items was. -Confusing to navigate on your first playthrough. Had to look up which areas to go next in the last third of the game. -Mother Brain is still the same. It was of course fun to fight on your first playthrough on SM, but not so much on repeated playthroughs.

While that miscarrige thing was out of left field. And Adam wasn't depicted as her lover, he was close to her and did die, as did her entire family, in the canon.

The only romhack i had ever played was metroid Redesign, but this looks promising as well.

I'm going through my first playthrough right now and I got to Kraid first which apparently means I got super missiles early? It took forever to beat him and he was nearly impossible with a charge shot wave beam, and 75 ammo. I just figured that the game was a really difficult version of Super, but I guess I made it harder on myself lol. I'm yet to find an entrance into the wrecked ship, so I don't even know how I'm supposed to progress, but this is honestly what I love about this game and Metroid in general. Here's to my eventual 100% completion of this game after 10-12 hours probably XD Thanks for the great video, even my comment is a little late :}

I actually own a full, CIB copy of this game for my SNES; I forget exactly where I bought it online though, as it's been several years. I have a number of SNES hacks for a few different games, but this one is easily the highest quality of them all. Still haven't beaten it yet, lol. If I recall correctly, I got stuck on Draygon and just couldn't get past him. I'm thinking of starting a new file and giving it another go, though!

You should try a hack called Metroid Subversion. It's extremely amazing. It's better than Hyper Metroid, although slightly harder (but still fair).

The ammo mechanic. I’ve actually been thinking about making a game where every resource (health, ammo, abilities) all pull from the same resource (energy? Idk) in a procedurally generated Metroidvania style game. If done right, I think it could be amazing (if the whole procedurally generated thing doesn’t work then it can just be a normal Metroidvania with the same mechanic idea)

I have played and completed all the good SM romhacks out there and i consider myself as a veteran player (not expert). I would rank these 5 as the top best of all time. The best SM hack IMO is Hyper Metroid. Second Super Zero Mission. Third Vitality. Fourth place Ascent and Fifth Subversion.

Even though the story and some visuals seems so edgy it’s hilarious, the hack itself seems like a lot of fun. Definitely have to check it out when I can pull myself away from my twelfth playthrough of Dread. Is there a way to implement the GBA style controls? It’s hard for me to play Super without them.

In rewatching this, hearing about people's complaints about being lost, that is the entire point of these games! Immersion in an alien world and exploring it to find everything is the entire ethos of Super Metroid! The main goal of these kind of hacks is to re-envision based on the original concept, a more fleshed out gaming experience for Metroid fans, and especially for speed runners and advanced players to cut their teeth on something new. Any player of Super Metroid, especially intermediate and advanced players, knows that the main aspects of gameplay revolve around Samus exploring new areas, and if she runs into overpowered enemies, she can either try and tough it out, or go back and try and look for hidden passageways in other areas where the enemies are less powerful until she finds her way through the labyrinth. I find those criticisms and complaints short-sighted, and perhaps these players shouldn't be playing a more advanced and expansive hack like this until they become more proficient players of the vanilla Super Metroid.

One thing that I absolutely hate about Hyper Metroid is the color of the Ice Beam. It's yellow. The beam is yellow, and things that are frozen are yellow. But it's still called Ice Beam. It is a disgusting color.

I usually cant stand changes to the coloration of samus aside from the gravity suit and the prime suits, but this looks kind of cool. Not sure what the intention is but it looks like her visor glows, sort of like the x01 power armor in fallout. Very cool.

as far as i can tell this romhack is impossible. power bombs are necessary to access every power bomb pickup in the game, speed booster is necessary to get gravity suit in the wrecked ship, and speed booster is located in norfair where gravity suit is necessary to survive hot rooms. that and there are no super missiles to be found anywhere and ice beam and space jump dont exist so i have to bomb jump everywhere that my gravity boots and grapple hook wont reach.

I first tried a ALTTP/SM randomizer and now I'm playing Hyper Metroid (after watching this video). What do you recommend next? I think Vitality shares the best spot with Hyper, any other?

It's an awesome game. I'll leave a little review since this video was instrumental in me deciding to play it and I'd like to contribute even a little. To start I thought the story was ridiculous, Adam and the miscarriage is dumb given established lore IMO, but worst of all was the idea of using Ceres as bait (Samus is suddenly evil? Cause that's evil. lol). But honestly story isn't a big deal for me when it comes to Metroid, in fact Other M mostly just made me laugh, so no biggie. It wasn't until much later in the game did I find some real annoyances. I really didn't like how you can encounter the Golden Torizo early given how absurd that fight is without the proper power ups. Maybe I shouldn't have been so stubborn in trying to beat him but I couldn't help it given how accessible he was and my burning desire to do what I felt would be a sequence break. I know I'm far from the only person with this complaint too. I was also too dumb to figure out that I needed to beat the Ridley guards in Norfair to progress, IMO it would have been better if they locked you in or somehow made it more clear that those guys really mattered. It probably would have been more obvious if it hadn't been around 5 years since I last beat Super but when you make a game this great it should IMO stand on it's own, although I can understand the assumption that one would know (I feel a small amount of shame). A couple secrets were a pain to collect and were a little to "pro" for me to enjoy but it's not a big complaint. I thought the escape sequence was cool but too long. Going through previous areas was a neat touch but i just thought the Tourian section dragged on and as such the novelty wore off for me. This is a really minor and possibly petty complaint but it's how I honestly felt. But despite those minor critiques I can't recommend it enough. It really is a must play for a Metroid fan and at this point I consider it on par with AM2R as essential fan games for Metroid fans. Since people getting into fan Metroid games might read this I'll add my two cents on other hacks I've enjoyed. Metroid HD for MESEN is pretty darn cool and makes Nestroid the best it's ever been IMO. I'd argue Rogue Dawn and Ascension are very good too but not on the same level, at least not for me, as Hyper or AM2R. Super Metroid Zero Mission looks great but i worry it's not going to be as fun as it should be given the reports of the difficulty being absurd. I haven't played Ancient Chozo or Project Base as they just seem to similar to Vanilla Super for me, but maybe one day I will. And if anyone has any suggestions for me based on this feel free to reply with them.
