India's State of Forest Report 2021 was released by the Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, on on January 13, 2022 states that India's forest cover has increased. But an indepth analysis done by Sunita Narain, Director General of the Centre for Science and Environment has found that India cannot account for 26 million hectares of forest or close to 34% of India's total 77.53 million hecatres of recorded forest. On the other hand forest expert M D MAdhusudan has questioned the methodology of how forests are accounted for. In India any patch of land which is one hecatre in size and contains a tree cover of 10% is considered a forest. Through this definition even plantations like tea gardens and coconut groves can be called forests. In this free wheeling conversation, Suinta Narain and M D Madhusudan discuss and deliberate how forests should be counted in India.

Thank you for discussing this issue of risking planting certain trees on our land which we might be prevented from cutting in the future. Also why growing some plants is illegal? License required for teak, sandalwood plantations is prohibited by what reasoning is still beyond me. I’m not trying to grow plantations but why not have a sandalwood or teak tree in my garden. I heard lot of people planting bamboo because it gives them flexibility of their land use.

The conversation is very much true in the perspective. Definition requires to be clear cut and transparent to understand, as otherwise present tree act is deterent to fallow homestead even where people may grow tree but may utilise the same along with using the land for other purposes in the perspective personal and family needs.

Thank you very much DTE. Can I ask 3 questions .. 1. Why is getting disaggregated data so difficult? Shouldn't it be made available at least under RTI? 2. Is the real issue about definitions, or is it the corporate and political greed that wants to obfuscate the issue through these definitions and defraud the country of its natural wealth? 3. How do other countries manage this? What are their definitions? Do they use the FAO definition too?

Dear sirs and mams have you heard about abubshahar wildlife sanctuary ? It is on records as largest wildlife sanctuary of Haryana and interestingly on Google Earth there is no more this sanctuary exists . Please make a story on this curious case to show the plight of these sanctuaries getting digested in name of populism and vote bank .

India really need to zero forest cut policy where natural forest must remain untouched . Moreover just like independent judiciary a independent watchdog and caretaker authority should be there in india with sufficient authority . Compensatory afforestation is just a fooling trick to show india getting greener . A forest once lost will never be revived again because of populism , and population explosion .
