In this heartfelt video, I share my raw and unfiltered journey as a black individual living in Spain.
Picture this: siesta time, the scent of orange blossoms in the air, and the warm Mediterranean sun kissing your skin. Spain's laid-back lifestyle is intoxicating.
- As a black person, I've revelled in the joy of lazy afternoons, sipping café con leche, and watching life unfold.
Flamenco Nights
- Flamenco-the soulful dance that transcends language barriers. The rhythmic clapping, the haunting guitar melodies-it's a celebration of passion and resilience.
- In the heart of Andalusia, I've swayed to the beat, feeling the echoes of centuries in every stomp.
Tapas and Tinto de Verano
- Spanish cuisine is an art form. Tapas-those bite-sized wonders-are a communal experience. Sharing laughter, olives, and chorizo with friends feels like home.
- And let's not forget Tinto de Verano-a refreshing blend of red wine and soda. It's the unofficial anthem of Spanish summers.
Unspoken Issue:
The Sideways Glances
- Beneath the vibrant façade lies a reality. The curious glances, the hesitation-it's as if my melanin triggers a silent alarm.
- Racism in Spain isn't prominent, but it's there. I've felt it in crowded metros and in hushed conversations.
The Balthazar Paradox Revisited
- During the Epiphany, Balthazar-the black wise man-is celebrated. Yet, some Spaniards don blackface to depict him. Tradition clashes with sensitivity.
- It's a tightrope walk between cultural appreciation and discomfort.
The Real Estate Divide
- SOS Racismo's experiment exposed the cracks. Discrimination in the real estate market based on skin colour-it's a sobering truth.
- As a black tenant, finding a home can be an uphill battle.
Context Matters:
- Growing up in Nigeria, race was secondary to ethnicity. But in Spain, it's different. Historical narratives shape perceptions.
- I don't play the victim card; I seek understanding. Spain is my canvas-a blend of light and shadow.
My Hope:
- Let's have an open conversation. If you're considering Spain as your home, know its beauty coexists with challenges.
- To my fellow black souls navigating this colourful world, ¡ánimo! We're part of Spain's intricate mosaic.

Naija, if you don't speak Spanish the assimilation is difficult. I do believe the integration is much easier if you master the language. Also, I don't think Spaniards are particularly fond of vegetables. We love meat, fish and shellfish. I'm afraid you have not experienced the real Spain, but some sort of tourist environment.

Oh yes, that's true as well. I am actively learning the language and have least integrated to an extent. When I mean vegetables, I meant eating healthy and having a balanced diet. 😅 I believe with time, things will get easier as I am going to communicate better in the language. Thank you so much for your comment.

These people are always aware of skin color. Madam, thousands of towns have passed through Spain throughout history, there is no prototypical Spanish. There are whiter ones, darker ones, blonde ones, etc... We don't spend the day looking at skin color as long as we respect the people and the culture.

Racism is not a thing in our culture. We mixed with indigenas, black or asians wherever we went. On the other hand, anglos have always been racists, that's why you are so focus on skin color. When you see a woman trying to avoid a theft, you think It is because your skin color but this is only in your mind. Anyone who knows where are the carts placed in Mercadona will understand the woman's mistake. Nevertheless i have to admit that i see more and more people concerned about skin color because of the influence of wokeism. You could have done a video titled "Living in Spain" but no, the focus of the video is your skin color... What a pitty

I had watched half of the video. Now i finished It and i learnt you only had two bad experiences so you agree with me, racism is not a thing in Spain. But i still do not understand what is so importante about skin color. Your experience in Spain would have been the same if you were white. Last thing, i think you are an honest person and you talked about your real experience instead of just victimaze yourself doing a video talking bad of Spain, what would bring you a lot of likes and you didn't. I want to warn you that talking well about Spain can get you a lot of hate. Have you ever asked yourself why so many spanish hate Spain? It is because of the Spanish Black Legend. So thank you for being honest, It is nice to listen at least to one person who talks well about Spain. If you want more información about Spain history, culture, black legend or whatever, i would be glad to help you.

@@enriquefernandezcasas9812 Thank you so much for watching and sharing your genuine thoughts. I believe I am not the first in the travel niche and there are lots of people who do way better. Often times its very easy to get misunderstood but it shouldn't be my worry cause I believe everyone will always have something to say. Where in Spain do you base if I may ask? And yes I really need any helpful resources you can provide as more videos are on the line already. Kindly subscribe and like if you haven't. My email address is in my bio, just in case you wish to take the conversation further. Thanks once again.

There’s absolutely no way your mix with Asian Asian blood dna is very pure It’s like 100% from eastern part usually because of isolation in the past from these countries.

Oh please, I'm an Afro American living in Granada but I've traveled all over Spain. Spain is very racist and slightly insular culturally. I found the Basque region to be the least racist part of the country. We can just look at the reactions of a lot of Spanish at the football games.
