What is it like working as a PA or NP in Electrophysiology (EP)?

Have you ever considered working in Electrophysiology as a PA or NP? This is an interesting niche specialty that is growing and is very APP friendly. In this video I interview David J. Bunnell, PA-C to find out what conditions you see in EP, what APPs actually do in the specialty, and if you have to be a cardiology expert to start in EP. Dave also shares excellent advice on how to prepare to work in EP and if he thinks EP is a good specialty for new graduates!

This was great, thank you. I will be starting as a new grad NP in electrophysiology. Excited for this growing field. Not only is there so much to learn right off the bat, but so many different areas fr growth. This video was informative and I loved how passionate David is about the field.

Hi what NP program should one take in order to qualify to work as an NP in electrophysiology? The only specializations I see being offered are either Family NP or Acute Care NP. Is there one specifically for Electrophysiology NP? Thanks!

Acute care is probably best because if you do any inpatient work, hospitals will prefer this certification. You can also work outpatient with acute care. Family NP would be ok if you know you only want to work outpatient clinics.

I am NP student interested in work in EP and device in the future. Thanks it is great video, may I ask what position I can work now as a rn to have maximum experience after I graduate in this field? I had read the ekg book in nursing school but I feel it was superficial knowledge only, I try looking for the path where I can start. I am working in step down have the chance to monitor the rhythm of my Pt, but only a few easy ones, there isn’t any in depth in EP.

Hi Judy. First thing I would suggest is to make sure you know how to read EKG's thoroughly. Jennifer Carlquist has an excellent course for that, with several free sessions you can join. Next, I would try to talk with any cardiologists or cardiology PAs/NPs that you come in contact in your hospital. Tell them of your interest and ask if they would share with you any interesting rhythms they see or explain some of the interesting cases they see. If you still want more, I would suggest trying to move into a cardiology or NP office. If you put yourself out there and inquire at offices in your town, you may find a practice that would be willing to take you on as an RN while you finish NP school with the understanding that you would then practice there once you graduate. I could see a practice being intrigued with the idea of "grooming" you in there ways and teaching you /training you as an RN, so you will be up to speed faster when you start practicing. Finally, I always recommend getting involved with the national organizations for your desired specialty. There is so much you can learn there and you can network with EP offices that may be hiring. I have SVT and my doctor recommended i should do EP study. I'm super nervous and scared, but at the same time i know i should get it done because I've been having worse symptoms lately. Can you please tell me how is EP study done and is it bad as it looks? And what would be the worst thing happening with my heart

I'm sorry that you are having these difficulties and I know it is scary to face a procedure involving the heart. Unfortunately, I do not work in EP and I also don't give medical help/advice on this channel. However, there are several video on KZfaq that discuss just what you are looking for.
