Id love to see a really good reason to not just hunt other players. Extract shooter always devolve from being about looting the environment to just camping the extraction zones.

The original Marathon game was not one where you jumped around like crazy and there was health and ammo littered everywhere on the floor. The health and save panels were rare and you did everything to find them. It was INTENSE. It was dark sometimes, there were puzzles, you had to be careful when you moved around. I sincerely hope they retain this feeling.

Man, I sure do love watching devs react to playing their own game rather than seeing actual gameplay. Very cool.

Everyone uses the phrase "cautiously optimistic" about this like they haven't just spent a decade watching Bungie make the worst possible choices they could at any given time.

I have played the original Marathon games. I get the feeling this is gonna feel completely different. In a good way or a bad way, I guess we'll see.

Literally so hesitant to get excited about this after how hyped I got for Destiny being an "open world." I'll never forget landing on the moon for the first time and then immediately stepping "out of bounds"

I'm hoping that the classic Marathon weapons return (especially the shotguns). And I speculate the Compilers lurking are remnants of the Pfhor invasion, but have since become isolated and "feral". No Pfhor to control them, no way to return to Lh'won, just scavenging for Jjaro relics just as the runners are.

I love Marathon’s universe and while I’m concerned about the genre shift, I think they can still deliver that juicy lore that I love so much about the original Marathon trilogy. I’m cautiously optimistic.

I played the original Marathon during my lunch breaks in high school. It was an intense experience that started conversations among my friends based on how far we had gotten in the game and what we had found. I struggle to see how a PvP extraction shooter is going to capture that essence. Marathon should have gone in the direction of the Halo series: cinematic storytelling in a single-player experience with online PvP modes.

Quite surreal seeing Bungie mention Halo again not gonna lie! As a HUGE Tarkov addict and lover of OG Bungie lore I'm really excited to see where they take Marathon, an Extraction Shooter could actually be the perfect style of game mirror OG Marathon's unique style of storytelling

If the pvp weaponry is balanced and the maps are consistently updated then bungie’s sense of physics and feel will make this game a hit

Seen so many dev logs like this and they almost always sound more interesting than they actually turn out to be lol. Not saying the game will be bad, but I doubt the experience will like how devs enthusiastically hype it. I've been so jaded by vids like this I've come to accept that ideas always sound cooler than execution.

I love how hard they try and explain the basic concept of an extraction shooter thats been done to death like its some brand new concept.

I hope this game will fill the hole in my heart that the cycle frontier left there.

Wish there was a single player game with this art style

The art style and aesthetics look incredible, but the PVP focus and the "I gotta be that dude! That #1 guy!" obsession really hampers my interest in the game.

I played through the original Marathon trilogy in my teens. It changed the way I looked at FPS games as a whole with its gripping narrative, nail-biting tension around every corner, and variable level design that swtiched between simple objectives, saving BOBs, solving puzzles, murdering armies, or just trying to survive. It's especially enlightening to see the context it provides for Halo, specifically how certain Marathon weapons evolved into Halo weapons, both series' protagonists being cyborgs with mysterious backgrounds, and the overall signature sci-fi gloom I have yet to see another game capture. So far this game is Marathon in name only, in logo only. I really don't think you should have bothered with that; just make it its own game, maybe?

I really hope the gameplay has fun physics like the old Halo games. Fun, physics based sandbox gameplay is Bungie to me. Can’t wait to see more!

Those who havent played the original Marathon trilogy and enjoy scifi games with a very deep plot have a new series to enjoy. I would highly recommend delving into the original story. You wont be dissapointed.

Having watched MandaloreGaming's video on the original Marathon, I was really excited to hear they were making a new game! Until I heard it was another extraction shooter...

As great as the game looks, it's a shame that the source material is only being name-checked and, based on what I've read, there appear to be no plans for a single-player campaign to build on/reimagine the original trilogy that many of us grew up with.

I'm so conflicted on this. I love Marathon and all its lore and i love what Bungie can create. I know the mechanics will be solid. I'm not a huge fan of competitive multiplayer games but more than that i don't see any visuals here that remind me of Craig Mullin's original Marathon concept art - which as a kid, was exactly what i'd imagine the Marathon universe would like with todays graphical capabilities.

This is going to be one of those "the game is broken but at least the shop still works" kinda games calling it now

If Marathon was coming back, I’d want to see a linear singleplayer campaign. The fact this is a multiplayer pvp extraction shooter just flies in the face of the themes of classic Marathon, and the emphasis on player choice kind of feels in opposition to the concept of Quantum Destiny established in Marathon Infinity. The more I see/hear about this, the more it feels like cashing in on name recognition, and I’m not sure I trust modern Bungie with this brand. 90's Bungie or 2000's Bungie, sure, but not post-Destiny Bungie. I don’t have time to explain why I don’t have time to explain why that is, but it’s where I’m at. When I first heard news of Marathon making a comeback, I was excited for a faithful retelling of the classic story, maybe even a remake/reboot like Doom and System Shock have been getting, but it seems my hopes have been dashed unless the multiplayer pvp game mode ends up being just a part of the full release.

The fact that so much focus is going into security is so appreciated, also taking time away from public eye to just grind this out is super respectable, can't wait!

Miss the epic single player Bungie experiences and it's a shame we are not getting that along side this multiplayer route their taking. Live service- while Bungie doing it better than most, we lose alot of potential.

Marathon has been my favorite video game series, since Windows '95. It's lore fascinated me. It's single player was fantastic. But I enjoyed PVE tournament parties all the way back in 1996 😅 What great memories and carnage.

I really hope their will be a campaign or PVE game mode ! I don't really like being stuck in a PVP gamemode being able to switch from competitive to a more private experience is always good in my opinion.

I got super hyped that Bungie was doing another singleplayer scifi story shooter with multiplayer part for a while. All these loot shooters with 29 XP bars just make me feel like I'm doing 9 to 5 instead of having any fun. :/

They're not describing what Marathon is, they're describing a genre, they're describing what an extraction shooter is. You could read a Wikipedia article about Tarkov and have more information about Marathon than after watching this video

So disappointed that we arent seeing Bungue return to create single-player experiences with multiplayer as a side option. Could have been a return to form for them, instead its like they asked "Hey, what if we made Gambit an entire game? Ooo ooo and lets get in on that closing circle of death thing people like that!"

The hype I'm feeling watching this reminds me so much of how it felt to watch the Halo 3 ViDocs almost 20 years ago. This is feeling like it's going to be the next big game.

Now, I'm going to admit that I'm a bit disappointed that the new Marathon is going to be an extraction shooter instead of a remake or reimagining of the original trilogy, but I'm also somewhat optimistic; the artstyle is genuinely cool and unique, and you guys have enough experience with multiplayer games to make this a really fun experience. Still, hoping for a future new singleplayer entry in the Marathon saga.

Every time I go back and watch this again, I'm more and more convinced that someone snipped out the first 5 minutes of the video. Something that actually explained anything about the world and why we should want to exist in it. The first thirty seconds are _"In Marathon you're a Runner. You grind the game to make your character better."_

As someone with thousands of hours in Escape from Tarkov, Halo, and Destiny, this is like a dream come true for me. The most important thing to remember in extraction shooters is the playstyles of all players being available, and that the movement feels fantastically accented by gunplay. Those are really important. Some of people's favorite elements of Tarkov is literally just the immersive nature of moving affecting your gunplay and how every mechanic affects every other mechanic in a personal immersion context. So excited.

Been watching Bungie Vidocs since Halo Reach. It’s always great to see what’s going on behind the scenes. These have been an inspiration for my pursuit of game development as well. Keep up the great work!

the original marathon was one of (if not THE) first game(s) i ever played. (and by played, i mean i was 4 watching my dad play them) i really really really hope this gets more people interested in the original story/games. if good things are built on the backs of giants, you shouldn't forget what made those giants who they are in the first place!!

Marathon as a setting could certainly work for a tarkov-like extraction shooter, but Marathon as an IP turning into a PVP focused game is not what most fans would have wanted I believe. The Marathon games have one of the most interesting stories in gaming, especially for their time and I imagine most fans of it wanted more of that story. Or a remake of it at least. A remake with a pvp mode wouldn't be the worst idea, but going purely pvp makes me question why it's Marathon

So basically they’re just sticking the Marathon name on a random pvp shooter. It looks and sounds like it has nothing at all to do with the Marathon games that were so good. Bungie isn’t even a shadow of their former selves.

I am hyped about this project. I would enjoy playing in such interesting world with so distinct, stylish visual style.

The only thing that concerns me is that I don't recognize any of the names in this video. Last two games I played where veteran studios put out games with names I didn't recognize were Mass Effect Andromeda and Back 4 Blood.

I wish more studios weren't afraid to show prototype gameplay. The game sounds really cool, but I'd love to see some early gameplay in here as well.

Something that would be interesting is a set of casual modes for Marathon, like TDM, Donination, etc that yo could bring your extracted weapons and gear into without being able to lose them. A way to hone your PvP skills without fear of losing items.

Halo and Destiny were the "30 years of experience and innovation to create Marathon". Someone's put me on the heavy stuff, History is changing again!

I really hope that we as players will unwittingly put together AI core like a Durandal or something simular as one of these artifacts

Players were ALWAYS a key point in Marathon's story. I just wish that there was a campaign in progress too that could directly go off of Durandal's story

The primary factor that made Halo great was the story and the lore. Although the PVP and multiplayer in general were huge contributing factors to the games success, a LOT of people stayed around for the franchise due to how attached they were to the world elements like the halo rings and learning about where they came from or even the people, like Chief or Cortana and learning about their pasts. So when I saw bungie was making another game (with the first initial trailer on this channel) I was hoping there'd be some kind of single player/story driven element for those who wanted to immerse themselves with the character and the lore, but after watching this video it looks like it's probably going to be another battle royal. Which is a real shame, considering the art and the aesthetic, it could've had a perfect atmosphere for a story mode or single player where you're exploring the futuristic/dystopian world, uncovering relics from the past to progress and learn more about how the in-game world had came into existence or came to become in the state its in. With that said I think personally people are getting sick of battle royale's, I mean just look at "The Finals" for example. The hype surrounding that game was massive, people thinking it'd be new and fresh with unique elements, but now even before it's been released and only after playing the beta the interest for it is disappearing. Update videos surrounding it or content creators talking about it don't even gain any traction anymore, some barely reaching 10k views on huge channels. So I really hope that this has something going for it, other than the importance of how many kills you get, wins you obtain or where you and your team is placed on the leader boards. Otherwise I can't really see this being huge, considering people want something more meaningful now days, something they can invest themself into and relate to. (Edit: Ignore any grammatical errors or spelling mistakes, it's been a long day and I'm exhausted)

It doesn't even look like Marathon and it's a trend following multiplayer only game instead of a Single player game. I miss old Bungie....

There are some incredible people on this team which does excite me. You think about people like Chris, Steve, and Scott and you see some of that "old Bungie" that people don't realize IS still there which is exciting. With them you see Destiny 1's original art design, or The Taken King's D1 revamp, or Forsaken's complete revamp of Destiny 2.

This is definitely going to have a store and microtransactions.....
