What is Metabolism?

Normally when we think of metabolism, we think of weight loss fads like the Keto diet, the Paleo diet or intermittent fasting. Metabolism, however, is way more interesting than weight loss trends. It is the process used by your body to transform Cap'n Crunch into brain cells, and some scientists believe it his has huge implication for the origin of life!

I absolutely love this channel. You clearly put a ton of work into finding the best way to explain the subject: What to include and in what order; the analogies and visualisations. I didn't feel that this video had quite the usual clarity in what it was communicating but perhaps that is just because the metabolism is a messy thing to try to explain.

although it is of course only a metaphor, I would much rather prefer calling organisms something like a self-structuring whirlpool. The importance of physical processes (besides chemical reactions) that enable life are just as important as the chemical processes. The nanoscale is in this ideal niche where discrete & continues mix very nicely together. E.g. one can have discrete building blocks like nucleotides, amino acids or lipids and assemble them into structures that are rather continue like DNA/RNA, proteins & membranes as in, you can't describe the structure by only knowing how its building blocks work. Yet these macroscale processes allow for discrete effects e.g. the expression of mRNA, a protein tagging other proteins with a phosphorous group or methylation of the DNA. These processes have direct effects on the functioning of an organism, without finding their foundation in chemical reactions. I could talk far more about non-chemical processes that are essential but I'm sure you get my point. As such, limiting the perspective of what it means to be alive in a scientific sense to only the metabolism is, in my opinion, a too narrow perspective on the matter. It is, however of course, a piece of the puzzle. I just hope people will realize there is more to it than (just) chemistry.

0:52 you mentioned that understanding chemics gets you a better underatanding of ourselves, life, and cosmos. Well i agree, i had the same idea about just focusing on the reproduction system and brain. Metabolism indeed too
