This video introduces the concepts of Model Train Automation. What are the types of automation? What do you need? ...and what do you need to think about? What can go wrong?
This is the first video in the Automation series. I hope to be able to explain the complex and advanced topic of train automation in a simple way so it is easier to understand and get started. However, it is a complex topic where many things can go wrong, so be patient and expect lots of troubleshooting.
Throughout the series I will focus on how to do this with Märklin components:
- Central Station 3
- Märklin signals, turnouts & decoders
- Märklin S88/L88 with Märklin C-track as contact tracks
Later in the series I intend to look into model train automation with software.
Enjoy and have fun with model trains :-)
Tips & How to included:
- Tip: Focus on reliability
- Tip: Test, test, test, and test again
- Tip: Solder every wire and connection

Hi Gorm, I do intend to make some videos on automation using software, but I am afraid it will take a while before I get around to it. However, I suggest you try it out. I have been using using TrainController and it is not too difficult to get started with this one. I seem to recall I just followed the first "Getting Started" chapter with the trial edition. For the most part you can find trial editions that you can try out before purchase. Your name looks Danish and I see some Danish on your KZfaq channel? Consider watching GarageSpam - he speaks Danish and have some videos on how he uses TrainController for software automation: kzfaq.info The fun starts after your first automated train on the track - lots of experimentation, but also lots of fun. You know what, Bo? They all tell me I have made a mistake with Marklin. I have bought 29792 ICE2 set. They say - sell it and buy Roco/Piko etc. I dont know anyone with Marklin here in Czech republic, all of them have DC. The fact is, that If I have known aboud AC, I would not buy it. But this video has convinced me it was not a bad step. Already I have Rail Zeppelin and I am buying extra 36203 - Czech machine.. Another advantage is - if someone buy incidentally something from Marklin and then try to sell it - noone wants it in here - so i can buy it very cheap. P.e. 29792 cost me as a return about 200€ (price is above 400) Thank you a lot for all these videos :)

Hi Tom, I guess I should say: welcome to being crazy with Märklin. I like the Märklin brand and the 3-rail system. To me it is a great way to do model railroading if you like central European railroads. For some of us it can be hard to find models for our local country. If you are into US or Japanese railroads I would agree that you should consider other brands. To me the important part is to find something you like. Don't know how easy it is to find Czech trains that can run on Märklin, so this could be a concern for you. Have fun with trains! Enjoy ;-) Bo

I have watched this video several times now and am getting ready to install three signals this week in a staging yard. I am using contact tracks and I believe I can make my stop tracks serve as contact tracks as well. So I will have a contact track prior to each signal to turn it to stop position and a contact track where the train stops which will change a turnout to track two, change a signal on track two to go, and set the train on track two in motion. I will let you know how it works. By the way, if I may offer one suggestion: perhaps consider putting less information in each video. For example: do one video about using the CS3 for automation and a second video for using software for automation. Just a thought. Thanks for your inspiration.
@ModelTrainFun
@ModelTrainFun 2 жыл бұрын
I hope you have fun with creating your staging yard. Yes same track can work as both contact track and stop track. Insulate center rail to make it stop track and insulate one of the rails to make it a contact track using the insulated rail as the detection rail. Unsure if we have talked about it before: If it's a hidden staging yard, then I would consider something without the need for signals in the yard (you might still want a visible signal at the entrance to the yard). In this case I would just have the contact at the end of the staging track (assuming one-way staging track). When the locomotive/train reaches the contact track, then just turn power off the entire track (center rail), change the turnout and an optional visible entrance signal. The trick is to make a contact track that is long enough for braking distance and ensure the entire track is long enough to always ensure the entire train is within the staging track. Why do I suggest to turn off the entire staging track? This is to also power off light etc. in the cars e.g. passenger cars. Note: Be careful with this approach if trains appear in the staging with high speed. Note: If you would like some specific input for your layout that I might be able to help with - consider sending me an email (see the Channel About). I perfer here in comments as others can read it as well, but if you have a specific design I could give you some input on email. As for putting less information in each video - indeed. Some of the later videos have become quite long. The next beginners will be divided into two to compensate for this. As for the Automation series: I have so far only talked about the basics and a little CS3 automation. Software automation is still many episodes away... Enjoy ;-)

Question: Can the hall effect sensors detect the metal in the locomotive/train/cars/wheels - or do you have to mount a magnet on it? Enjoy model trains ;-)

This was very helpful. I am just beginning to introduce some automation so that I can have a small (3 track) staging yard. I would like to use braking modules as well. In the lower level of the layout, where the staging yard is located, I do not need to use signals. I am thinking that the contact tracks in your demonstration layout must trigger an event and that the event might consist of things such as changing the signal settings and switching some turnouts. So, am I correct in thinking that you need an S88 and contact tracks to trigger an event, but that you would also need an m83 (or an in-track decoder) to switch the turnouts and change the signal? What additional equipment is needed to connect the braking module to the CS3+? Also, what is the difference between k83 and m83, or between k84 and m84?
@ModelTrainFun
@ModelTrainFun 2 жыл бұрын
I am glad this video is helpful. This is just an introduction video. In the following videos in the series I will introduce automation and then look at some typical examples like the staging yard/shadow station. A brief description of how I achieved it is that I have S88 connected using contact tracks. The contact tracks are at the end of the platform. When the trains arrives at the end of the "platform" it activates a contact track. I use this event to change the entry signal to green and change the turnout. Additionally, I set the signal to red when the train leaves the contact track (it is Free). You can see how to connect the S88 with contact track and the beginnings of automation in the Automation series: kzfaq.info/sun/PLYAhs-Pox3sHzQJsNU-FmOEj1ylO-NPpV You can see the scripts I used here: 1drv.ms/u/s!AqYmnR5sGgDxgR9Ja1aua3Ckq_fX I will continue the Automation series to talk more about how this actually works. If you are to make a staging yard/shadow station then I would just use the m84 to power off the entire staging yard track when the train reaches a certain point. The reason it is the entire track is two-fold: 1. it ensures that event if the locomotive is not in front, then the train stops 2. No need for power on a train in the staging yard/shadow station. This would power off all lights, sounds, etc. There is no need for a braking module. However, it could be nice to slow the speed of the train. Unfortunately, I have not yet played with the braking module. To me the module is very expensive and I am hesitant to buy and use it. But will look at it one day... You are correct there are turnout decoders to change the turnouts. I am using internal decoders here, but you can also use the m83. I have not tried the older k83 and k84 modules - I believe they are old much simpler versions of the modern black m83/m84. You can fing more on the turnout mechanisms, decoders and the m83 in the beginner series: kzfaq.info/sun/PLYAhs-Pox3sG31NwCfqIuk6IvI19q2czn Hope this gives you some ideas. Enjoy ;-)

Technology has gone so far that the model train today is very close to the real thing. I can imagine if the same control system is used in the real world, it will work as well. Of course, the real world scenario is much more complex and safety is more of an issue, but I think the controlling method is similar, censor, signal, control.
@ModelTrainFun

There are some similarities, but you can also skip and simplify. As an example when making signals they do not have any safety mechanism for preventing to pass a red - and trains do not have a "keep a live" - or is the "driver still active" button ;-) However, there is much to learn for the real world. @@ModelTrainFun You are right. There are some difference. I think the major difference is that the real world is a decentralized system, in other words, there are many decision makers in the network; while in the model world, at least at the current day, it is a centralized system, in other words, automation aside, the maker makes all the decisions. @ModelTrainFun

Hi Mattias, Documenting the events is something I have not found a good way of doing, so I am very interested if you have found a good way to do this. I usually end up taking screenshots of the CS3 - or just save as backup. The icons are basically just taken from screenshots of the CS3. In order to make screenshots of your CS3 do the following: 1. Connect the CS3 to your local network as shown in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pdaGZbFjmqyqaJ8.html 2. When you are connected you can see the network IP address of the CS3 in the settings as seen here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pdaGZbFjmqyqaJ8.html In this video the IP is "192.168.171.2". 3. Use any computer, tablet or cell phone and open your favorite browser. Go to website "192.168.171.2" or "192.168.171.2/" (remember to change to the IP seen on your CS3). 4. After accepting terms & conditions, then you can click on "System", scroll down and you can click on "Creating a screenshot". This will take a screenshot of what currently is on the screen of the CS3 and give it to you as a photo. Hope this helps! Enjoy ;-)

@ModelTrainFun
@ModelTrainFun Жыл бұрын
Hi Jannes, Agree - no need for signals in the shadow station. To me the most obvious choice is the M84 as it is really built for turning power on/off. The M84 is rated for up to 5 amps per group (there are 4 groups). For use in a shadow station, you can turn it into 8 on/off like I have done in the video for controlling 8 lights: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m9VmaM15xtW7oXk.html Additional benefit is that you can use the input on the m84 to sense when a train is on a shadow track. I have not yet tried this myself and am not sure if there are any pitfalls. However, I intend to make a video on this in the future. You should also be able to use the M83 - however, it is rated for 3 amps in total. This might be ok for a shadow station, but unsure if the M83 is ok with this type of usage. It was originally built for turnouts, so unsure if this is a stretch. You can program the M83 to work as an on/off as well. I have not tried it with the m83 either - I am unsure how well it will work. However, you will need an S88 as well to detect when the train has arrived in the shadow station. If you have a CS3 you can also automate locomotives to automatically stop in a shadow station and turn off. However, it requires a dedicated control of each locomotive like what you see in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n8txn9ecpsW7dKs.html or some of the earlier episodes in the Automation series. You can contact me by email (see the "About" on this channel for my email) if you cannot wait until I make a video on this (might take some time). I will try to help as good as I can over email. I am a new subscriber and just getting into Marklin HO. The layout I am planing will not be fully automated, as I am planning on using the MS2 for train control, but I would like to add some signals for stopping trains on parts of the layout that will not be fully visible (for train storage). For the signals that will be on the visible part of the layout, is it possible to arrange the wiring so that after you set a signal to green using your MS2, the train will automatically re-set the signal to red after that train has passed the signal? Great videos, but like the comment below, perhaps too many things being repeated over and over. Thanks for posting!!
@ModelTrainFun
@ModelTrainFun Жыл бұрын
Hi, Thanks for subscribing I hope you will like the channel. If you are making a train storage you don't need the signals to stop the trains. Signals are expensive and if you cannot see them it is a lot of money for something that is hidden. I suggest making a stop track without using the expensive signals. In this way trains will automatically stop when the "virtual" signal turns red. For a train storage (or shadow station) I would make the stop track using the m84. The benefit is that the m84 can work as 4 "virtual" signals and it has inputs that can trigger the output. You can see in this video how to use the m84 to make a stop track: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rdiDidqYrs22XWg.html Do the same without attaching a signal. In this way you can turn on and off power to the track. The final piece is to use the inputs on the m84. I have not shown this in any video. If you look at the manual on page 15 (to the right): static.maerklin.de/damcontent/46/23/46232662a863dd86dbcd0291ea519cdf1650956214.pdf You can see that the m84 has an input as well. The drawing shows a circuit track (Märklin 24194, 24294 or 24994) that is connected to input 4. The idea is that if a locomotive with a slider crosses the circuit track, then input 4 is triggered which will turn on 2 green (as this is the 4th output). In this way if you have a stop track on output 1 and if 1 Red is turn off stop track, then using a circuit track to trigger input 1 will make the m84 turn on 1 Red thereby turning off 1 Green. You can do the same with input 3 triggering 2 Red, input 5 triggering 3 Red, etc. Note: you can also use reed contacts as shown in the manual on input 8. Unfortunately, I do not have a video showing this yet. I do intend to make one in the future, but have not gotten around to it. If you need more help send e an email - you can find my email here: www.youtube.com/@ModelTrainFun/about Let me know what you figure out and if it works. Enjoy ;-)

interesting video thanks, could you maby make a video about this but instead of 3 trains going to the same stopping point, how about doing 1 train that chooses a different station to stop at each time and maby put another train on the track so if 1 track is already in use it will try and pick another?

Great suggestion and I agree. The movement of the trains is a little boring on this little layout. I have had the automation series on pause for a little while as I have been a little unsure on how to move forward. In one of the next videos on the channel I will be resuming the automation series by experimenting with CS3 automation. The layout will be more advanced and include more advanced train movements. However, the first videos will build on the basics and still have simple train movements. I will incorporate your suggestion in the later videos to include redirection and randomness due to track being occupied. Hope you will find the CS3 layout experimentation interesting. Enjoy ;-)

Cool - I have not tried the reed contacts (aka reed switches). I have heard that they are reliable, if you are careful to place the contact/switch and magnets correctly. Are you using the Märklin ones (Märklin 7555-8)? Is it easy to make automation using these? are you using CS3 or another control station? Have fun ;-)

I use contact reed from Marklin (ref 7555) that is connected to an S-88 module (ref 60881). I use an CS3 plus as a control station. It is very easy to set up.I prefer this system than to create contact track. You need to attach a special magnet under one of the locomotive or wagon in order to generate the signal to the central sation. You have specific magnet that you can attach in the Marklin assortment (Ref 7556, 7557 and 7558)

Cool - will have to try it. Question: how do you handle trains with magnets in both ends (so you can detect both directions) in the CS3 events? In essence how do you ignore the 2nd trigger? ...or do you just have magnet in one end and detect the other direction differently? Enjoy ;-)

Normally, one can place the magnet below the locomotive or under one wagon. I tend to place the magnet under the last wagon of a convoy so that when it enters a block it triggers an event (light or turnout). Normally, it is the best way to avoid accidents. Marklin magnets are very handy as they come with strong adhesives.

Hi Bo, I wanted to ask you to tell us about a problem that with Märklìn you will never have but for me that I have Trix instead yes, I am talking about the short circuit that is generated in model railways with two tracks with the return ring. Would it be possible to see it on the Central Station 3 plus?
@ModelTrainFun
@ModelTrainFun 10 ай бұрын
Hi Lorenzo, The Central Station 3 (CS3) will automatically go into STOP mode and cut power to the layout when a short circuit is detected. If you are using track detection on 2-rail layouts, then the track detection works by detecting shorts. You can use this to help indicate where the short might be: either where the trains are - or on the piece of track showing occupied where no train is. Don't forget you still need a "loop" module to handle power change when going through the loop. To be honest I have never played with this - just seen it in other KZfaq videos. Hope this helps! Enjoy ;-) Bo

I do get the impression that the CS3 is not the most suitable device for train automation, am I right? From the specs, video's on youtube and documentation I thought it wast the right device for it, and with very many usefull options, but is it truelly a waste of money for real train automation?
@ModelTrainFun
@ModelTrainFun 2 жыл бұрын
I find the CS3 a great investment for many reasons - one being enabling automation. To be honest I am still learning about automation and I am not the expert. This automation series is also a learning journey for me. I have experimented with CS3 automation and software automation. If you want to do train automation you need a control station. I find the CS3 to be a great control station and you can do surprisingly advanced automation with the CS3 alone. You can see this video by @AlterKlapperKnochen an example of a layout completely controlled by the CS3: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z8lymqyU3de7dqs.html However, I find doing automation tedious and limiting on a control station. In my limited experience I have not found a control station that does it better than the CS3. Using software on a PC to automate a layout gives a lot more possibilities and it is simpler to do very advanced automation. However, as the video above illustrates the CS3 is more than capable of automating a layout. To use the software you need a control station that can connect the PC with software to the layout. The CS3 is great for this. However, it is also an expensive control station with lots of functionality. If you do software automation you essentially only need a control station that can connect to the PC and just convert the signals to/from the layout. You do not need a display or to be able to control the layout manually - you can do it through the software. I know control stations like this exists, but have no experience with these. Furthermore, these control stations seem to have a limited base of use and can be difficult to find help to use. Let me know if you know of or find a good one. I like the CS3 because I can fully control my layout and it enables software automation. My goal is to have a software automated layout where I can also manually drive trains with my CS3. I see the CS3 as a good control station for achieving this goal. However, before I get to this I will look at CS3 automation in this automation series. Did this answer your question? Enjoy and have fun ;-)

You talk about digital signals, ofcourse from märklin. I was wondering whether it's possibile to connect microscale SBB signals to the CS3. Is there anything that I need extra?
@ModelTrainFun
@ModelTrainFun Күн бұрын
Hi, Are you talking about these signals? www.microscale.ch/_downloads/Flyer_101.pdf As I read it they do not come with a decoder - however it seems they recommend www.qdecoder.ch Looking at these decoders e.g. www.qdecoder.ch/lichtsignal-decoder-?c=7 it seems they support both MM and DCC. This means you can control them from the Central Station Station 3 (CS3). However, some of these signals look very complex and have many aspects. The CS3 supports 2, 3 and 4 aspect signals with direct icons. You can also use more complex signals but it might be more cumbersome. Generally, I understand if you want complex signalling then you need to go beyond standard controllers and use software automation that better can handle complex signalling. Hence, I foresee you want to use an automation software together with the CS3 to fully utilize the signals. I would ask around to see what other people do with these specific signals. If you can find good advice it is best for complex signalling. In short: It can be done, but can be complicated. I hope this helps! Enjoy ;-) Bo

Check out the store locator on the Märklin website: www.maerklin.de/en/service/store-locator Even if you are not near one most will ship to your location. There are also German online stores that ship directly to USA. If you want to start I recommend to start with a starter set such as shown in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qdJ6jdJ-vMCWZGw.html This is a good way to get started and has everything included. In this way you can with a small investment decide if the model train hobby is something for you. You can find similar starter sets from other brands as well if Märklin is not your flavor ;-)

Hi Mattias, I don't think there is a really good book on making automation and CS3 event programming. The basic events are described in the CS3 manual, but how to put it together in a more advanced setting is something you have to figure out yourself. I have created a lot of software, so perhaps I have had an advantage there. However, there are multiple ways of doing it. Which is why I have titled Automation episodes 5, 6 & 7 as "Experimenting with...". I hope you find it useful and I am always looking for input on other ways to do the CS3 event programming. Can Marklin Mobile Station unit do the same thing ? Or we must purchase CS2 unit?
@ModelTrainFun
@ModelTrainFun Жыл бұрын
Hi Horton, The Mobile Station cannot do any automation. However, if you only need something very simple you can use the m84 as it has inputs that can control the output. As an example turn signal red when train passes or turn on/off power on another stretch of track when a train appears. Unfortunately, I have not found a way to change a turnout using the m84. If you want to do automation using a control station you need the Central Station 3 or Central Station 2. I have not tried the Central Station 2, so I do not know how well this works. If you are using software for automation you could potentially use a simple control station with a software interface. However, I have not found a good one that is cheaper than the Central Station 3 with a computer interface. You can use software automation with both the Central Station 2 and Central Station 3 as they can interface with a computer. Did this answer your question? Enjoy ;-)

Tak for nogle ellers meget gode videoer.

Hejsa, I denne automatisering bruges Central Station 3 (CS3). Hygge ;-) Bo

if the train cannot be decoded to stop anywhere on the track without the signal having to interrupt currents to the track, I have difficulty seeing the ID when driving digitally. apart from the fact that you can just stand and stare at the plant running by itself. I would then think that the whole idea of running digital trains is, if you can code trains, to run as if there were signals. even if they are not there. but it may well be that it cannot be done. I'm considering changing my career path, but I'm not sure if I should go digital, as I don't know how it works exactly. but had an idea and must say I am very disappointed now
@ModelTrainFun
@ModelTrainFun 4 ай бұрын
Hi Amdi, Indeed in the example show in the video the signals stop the trains - however, the signals are truly not needed. You can also have the Central Station 3 (CS3) stop the locomotives when they hit the contact track. For the most part signals in the digital world are just lights. Using the STOP track that some signals support is mostly useful, if you are also running trains manually while others are running automatically. You can also consider using the STOP track it in a shadow station where you would like to avoid more advanced programming. In this video you can see how you can stop the train with in the Central Station 3 (CS3) without STOP track: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g9qKZLCK3LWwdI0.html If you are considering digital and want to know how it works you can look at my Beginner playlist: kzfaq.info/sun/PLYAhs-Pox3sG31NwCfqIuk6IvI19q2czn Unfortunately I am native digital, so I cannot give you much advice on how to transition from analogue to digital - other that doing it in steps.
