In 1812 German geologist Friedrich Mohs developed a simple method for testing and comparing the hardness of different minerals. Mohs' hardness scale kits are widely available and often used in science labs all around the world when teaching geology. In this video I demonstrate some of the common minerals used within the scale, test it using some examples of everyday items, and investigate the hardness of some unknown items. Mohs' hardness scale goes up to 10, but since 10 is diamond (and diamond is very expensive) this kit only goes up to a hardness of 9.
