What is Neutral Tint - Demonstrating How It Can Be Used

In this Watercolor Tutorial, I discuss what Neutral Tint paint is, what pigments it contains, and how I use it in my paintings. You can even mix your own if you don't want to buy a convenience mix. I hope you find the information useful! Enjoy!

I love neutral tint! I like it better than Payne's grey which I find leans too much on the lavender side. I love to mix my neutral tint with greens and browns for darker shades. I recently found shadow green though and I love that color to get really deep greens. Awesome video Cat! 🤩😀

Oooh, I will have to try shadow green. Daniel Smith maybe?? I too find Payne's grey ( at least the ones I have) are very blue and I don't always want blue. And if I mix a grey using u.marine, it separates too much. Thanks so much for your feedback.😊

Cat … thank you for this very helpful demo. A tube of neutral tint was included with a set of Qor watercolour paints I bought and I wasn’t really sure how to use it. Needless to say-I tried mixing it with other colours to darken them and got horrible results so I set it aside. Using it as an under painting makes so much sense. Duh to me and a big thanks to you for pointing out a proper way to use it. 👏

🤣 "duh to me"! I'm so glad the video helped, it's my pleasure. I'm curious about the pigment content in the Qor version. It would explain why your mixes turned out so horribly. Actually I'm going to Google it now! 😁

@@catscreations66 Well this explains a lot … the Qor neutral tint is comprised of PY42/PR122\PB15:3. I seemingly just kept getting a “dirty” greenish-yellow colour. But now I know to use that little gem on its own. Thanks again!

THANKYOU ‼️ I learned a lot from this video. I had no idea what to use NT for. Now I’ll buy some. Many people like Windsor & Newton the best, so I guess that’ll be the one. 🙂

If you have perlyene green and a pv19 you should try that I think it makes a lovely NT so try that before going for a whole tube.

Thank you, very informative, I however ask, I don't see a blending of colors just a dark area, not a blending to shade or shadow; any help there please?

Hi there! I hope I'm understanding correctly.....I mix my own version of neutral tint between 1:15 and 2:15. If that's not what you were referring to, please comment again. I would really like to help if I can. Thanks for watching! 😊

@@catscreations66 I am thinking that there is a dual purpose for Neutral Tints, 1 is to gradually show a shading of an object in which case shouldn't there be a gradual change showing shading/shadow much like pencil grades? Hopefully this is clearer for both of. What I'm seeing in your demonstration is not a gradual shadow or showing of depth.
