Pastafarianism is a somewhat controversial religion that first surfaced in 2005. It presents a commentary on intelligent design and creationism that has received support from atheists and other religious skeptics. The religion has been deemed a parody or satirical view of traditional religions that support the idea of an omnipresent creator.
The religion revolves around the Flying Spaghetti Monster, who is the supreme creator. He also just happens to be a flying cluster of noodles. FSM created the whole universe in only 4 days, all the while drinking intensely. He appointed pirates as the chosen ones because they live such a badass lifestyle. Pastafarianism supports the idea of an afterlife. Both heaven and hell exist, although their differences are subtle. Both places are abound with beer and strippers. Pastafarians reject creed and formalism, but they do have a certain set of rules dubbed “The I’d Really Rather You Didn’ts” These mostly focus on being a good person and not worrying too much about what other people are doing.
Many have argued that Pastafarianism is just as valid as intelligent design. While the religion is meant to be funny, it does bring up valid points. The religion has garnered a lot of media attention relating to religious freedom. You may have seen a news story or two about people arguing for the right to wear the sacred colander in government issued ID. Different countries have produced different rulings about the validity of the religion. The Netherlands, New Zealand and Canada recognize Pastafarianism as a legitimate religion, while the United States does not.
