This kind of thing is how I usually make or edit patterns! It really is easier to take an existing shape made by someone then add onto it with more shapes.

omg the end result is ADORABLE! I can definitely get how the triple crochet would be a pain, but man the results made it so worth it :)

I think the question of “is this my pattern” also comes down to how complex or innovative the shape that’s being hacked is. Like a tube or potato is nothing new, but if you used the clever method to make teeth with gums from the possum video, you’d at the very least want to credit you and if it’s the main feature of the pattern you really shouldn’t sell it.

I love your sheep! I also appreciate your suggestion for who owns the hacked pattern based on respect for the original pattern owner and basic ethics. I enjoy your videos. I always learn something from you. Thanks for sharing your talents.

Personally i'd even credit the pattern maker if i heavily hacked the pattern because imo i still didn't come up with the basic shape... (I am however also not skilled enough to design anything on my own) To me that's like cutting up an apple: while i did perform significant changes to make it look different it still is an apple... Hope i got along what i wanted to say here😅 Also, can we for a quick second appreciate this cute little fluff you made? I honestly always am amazed at the things you come up with!

That is a good rule and like you said its a gray area and the nuances of it can be argues every different way. I think its do you feel it has a Significant influence on the end result or not. Like if I am doing a Noah's ark toy set then I absolutely shouldn't take your sheep pattern and just insert it into my pattern because that has a significant influence that isn't mine but if I am struggling to figure out to do the ears then looking at patterns of things that have ears similar to what I want and figuring out how to work that in is ok because the overwhelming bulk is mine.

This is how I made my ball joint crochet dolls! I studied other doll patterns, learned how they made the shapes, altered some things so I could add the joints and some other bits so I could make different bits to completely customize the dolls. I am working on wings for a gargoyle doll next, and I have learned a lot about making wings from your videos!

Regarding selling the resulting pattern - if they are potatoes, eggs, balls, the typical shapes, if you do enough of them you will eventually not need a pattern to make the shape. So even if you use the shape from a pattern ie to get a predictable sized potato, I think you can still call it your design. I've always been an "eyes bigger than my stomach" so even as a beginning crocheter I'm coming across patterns with some truly bizarre and questionable shapes. Then I say your question becomes valid.

Honestly I think you hack a pattern and make it your own and wanna sell the pattern it'd be okay as long as you make sure to disclose the inspiration came from the pattern you hacked and link to it. It's fine to be proud of what you make but also just make sure you credit the people who made the pieces originally

Worked absolutly fine for me and he looks absolutly cute :D (And i am not really selling ^^; and never the patterns) PS: Sorry if my english isnt good ^^;

As @MagicByIzzy has said, it's experimentation, but it's also experience. I've been using Tr and DC to add toes and claws to things for years now, so this sheep looks wooly to you but all I see is a big old ball of toes.

Hi ! This is adorable !!!! I'm brand new in the crochet world and I've only done 2 things, but my results are always so ugly compare to the video even if I use the right crochet and a yarn corresponding to the crochet, any tips to get better? Because it's been days now that I'm watching A LOT of ur videos and I'm already fan 🤩 it seems so easy when u are doing it 😭😭

I get your frustration! I think there’s two parts to it: One, usually when judging your own things, one is harder then when judging others. So when you watch her videos you only see the cute result but when you look at your own product you see the result but tainted from all the struggles and mistakes. And two: It really needs practice! If you’re that new to crochet you‘re still learning tension, stitches, even how to hold the yarn. I really don’t think amigurumi is the easiest way to start learning, but if that’s what inspires you, do it. Don’t get discouraged, just keep going! You’ll get better!

What do you think of pattern hacking and selling the end result? I always dwell on that question, because I sew and crochet tiny doll clothes and I have to rework the patterns for my own gauge and for each doll I use. Do you think it is OK to make the parts and sell the finished product? I could put "based on a pattern by: ...." on the bags... (thinking out loud).
@Thirikalee

So you sell the dolls but not the patterns? The way you describe it sounds okay to me. Best practice would be to ask the designers themselves.

@ComplicatedKnots

I think there's a responsibility to anyone using the pattern you make for you to understand how the shape has been formed. You can't help someone troubleshoot what's gone wrong if you don't understand the shape enough to have built it yourself in the first place! :)

Hello! It's every second stitch no matter what. If that stitch is a decrease, yarn over twice, pick up the front loops of the stitches you are decreasing, yarn over and pull up a loop through both, then work the Tr as per normal. All increases will have one sc, and one Tr!
