Physical medicine and rehabilitation, or PM&R, is a unique medical specialty. PM&R physicians are known as physiatrists, and we focus on improving function and adding quality of life to years.
What conditions do PM&R physicians treat?
We specialize in the non-operative treatment of conditions of the central nervous system, muscles, bones, joints, and nerves.
We work hand in hand with physical and occupational therapists, utilizing therapeutic exercise and a variety of medications to optimize patient performance.
We are experts in managing low back and neck pain.
Traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, stroke, Parkinson's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders.
Knee pain, shoulder pain, and other forms of joint pain.
Overuse injuries.
Nerve injuries and plexus injuries, and much more...
How Do You Become a PM&R Doctor?
Physiatrists are medical doctors who have completed 4 years of medical school.
And then gone on to complete years of residency training in the specialty of PM&R....and often followed up with sub-specialty training in the areas of:
Sports Medicine
Interventional Pain Medicine
Spinal Cord Injury Medicine
Brain Injury Medicine.
Pediatric Rehabilitation, and more...
What Procedures Do PM&R Physicians Perform?
Electromyography and nerve conduction studies to diagnose nerve injuries and other neurologic conditions.
Musculoskeletal ultrasound for diagnosis, as well as for guiding a variety of joint and tendon injections.
Interventional spine procedures such as epidural injections, medial branch blocks, radiofrequency ablations.
Botox injections for spasticity management.
And much more....
Make an appointment with your local physiatrist if you or a loved one suffer from any of the conditions we mentioned.
It is our great privilege to care for you, and to help you improve your quality of life.

Been on the planet for over 65 years, and the first time I've heard of this specialty was last week, when my wife's PC physician referred her to a physiatrist. Looking forward to him helping her.

A have a couple of questions regarding PM&R residency. 1. Do you have emergencies? 2. How is the practice of PM&R after residency(work in a hospital or outpatient clinic)? Thanks!

Just like any other specialty PM&R has its emergencies, like AD in an SCI patient or AMI during ETT procedure and so on. But, emergencies are not a regular part of day to day job. Now-a-days, the concept of Hyper-acute rehab has come up where a physiatrist is working in concert with a trauma team especially in polytrauma patients to prevent impairments and improve overall outcome. There they may have to attend acute injuries which are actual life threatening emergencies. It depends on the sub-specialty.

What does a sports medicine PM&R doctor do?

Madden Pikula it’s pretty difficult to do sports medicine full time so they split a lot of time between working as a normal PM&R stuff and non surgical sports injury procedures

yerebiz pmr is a looot more neuro/msk and fm is much broader. Depends on how specialized you want to be. Fm docs are usually not as good at msk/neuro as pmr docs

M T Family Medicine doctors can also deliver babies. It is not the exclusive domain of an OB/GYN Your reasoning is not sound. There is overlap in procedures done in different specialties.

You seem incredibly mis informed. Pain medicine/management is a fellowship thats easily accessible to PM&R docs. Along with neurology, anesthesiology, and psychiatry. And yes PM&R docs are DOCTORS. 4 years of undergrad, 4 years of med school and 4 years of residency. They can perform the same procedures as an anesthesiology pain medicine sub specialist, their fellow ship is combined.

M T My point was that the procedures done by different specialties overlap. I don't consider this a problem as long as 1) They can show they are properly trained. 2) They know what they can't handle. Plus, PM&R doctors are trained in the context of rehab. That is what they bring to the table. Also, as someone with Cerebral Palsy, I CAN see their place in pain management.

He's literally dense lol, PM&R docs literally have MANY fellowships open to them that cross over to MANY different specialties.

Abdiaziz Hassan I know. He also keeps bringing up physical therapy even though physical therapy is done by physical therapists. That is as it should be because that is what physical therapists go to school for.

😂😂 i always wonder why this speciality exists,, even orthopaedician, spine surgeons, neurologist can do ur job , i think even general physician along with physical therapist can do ur job.. mostly rehab part relies on physiotherapist efforts ,wt u guys do ,jst prescribing pain killers ,giving tablets for spasticity even general physician can do this job,, without physiotherapist and OT rehab cant be possible, bt without PMR rehab can be possible even by physiotherapist...😂😂

Theyre not going to do EMG's, nerve blocks, spinal cord stimulators, kyphoplasty's, neuromusculoskeletal diagnostics, botox injections for spasticity etc., all at once. PM&R docs dont do therapy. You dont know what you're talking about.

I really don't understand why PT's don't recognize PMR as a medical speciality like orthopaedic surgery, cardiology and so on. Morevover I should advice that physical therapy in a part of physical medicine and rehabilitation (PT is a part of the cake, not the entire cake as my Prof said one time). Convince yourself.
