I'm actually working with POE++ for my Comp Engineering Capstone! really cool stuff, but man is type for a mess right now....

I work in lighting and we just had a presentation yesterday about POE Lighting and LiFi. That can easily exceed the 100W especially in Outdoor and Industrial applications.

This series is going to be very useful to me. We will be buying a new house soon and I want to wire as a smart house and have cameras. I'm needing a basics course on POE.

I just went with ubiquiti for my house, used there switches so that I get pretty pictures in the management gui. I had my 1870's house wired with cat-5e about 20 years ago... I have three pretty poe access points on my walls because, exactly as you say brick, lathe&plaster. I heard the general rule: an ap will reach through one wall, and it has been true for me. I started with two, and added one, because I noticed a number of dead spots that also failed the rule of thumb. First time I have ever had solid wireless, big improvement.

just started tinkering with PoE+ switch for a security camera system. the PoE system makes setting this up so much easier. Thank you for the video. didn't realize my switch was PoE+ Yeah... more standards that don't standout but need to be known.

Slightly surprised there was no mention of copper clad aluminum (CCA) cable and how it's not ideal, especially in PoE applications.

Looking forward to this. I have PoE cameras and APs currently with CAT6 in the house we built a few years ago. We are looking at moving or building a new house in the next 6 months and will have to redo our system.

Love it! Im not probably usual subscriber but it would be great to have more network tutorials/explanations. There so many stuff and its hard to get GOOD basic knowledge.

For power users on a budget that want a poe 10gbit sfp+ switch, check out the Aruba S2500 series. You will bang your head against the wall learning how to configure it, but I promise the information to do so is out there. Hint hint, it is extremely similar to Cisco iOS but you make Profiles, and assign the profiles to the port. Ports themselves can't have individual configs, but they can have as many "profiles" as you need to accomplish the goal. They are relatively low power ~50 watts and quiet enough to shove in a closet and not be a bother. I have mine set up for like 10 vlans, trunk ports, lldp/cdp voice vlan, pre-standard cisco poe output, etc.

I use POE almost every install. Install telecommunications in the oilfield on rig leases. We take anywhere from two to four cell signal's band them together through an amazon VPN so they are combined into one, we then use an EnGenius switch for our CloudTrax access points. Most of the time we have a wireless radio that that create a mesh and we hook our AP from there so no POE, but when we run hardlines we use POE so we just need to plug in the AP and that shack/sleeper has wifi.

I use Mikrotik CRS328-24P-4S+RM 24 port Gigabit Ethernet router/switch with four 10Gbps SFP+ at home to power my VOIP phones, WiFi APs and security cameras. It's a great 24 port switch at decent price point. Configuring it is a bit harder than regular consumer switches but it gives you alot of flexibility of how you want to route your traffic. Also love having a real terminal port on the switch.

I used to use a few PoE injectors for my security cameras, but now my NVR has PoE built-in. It does make wiring a lot easier.

omg... wtf wendell i've been so fkn curious how this shit worked for about a year.. my brain is gonna cook up some ideas of the usefulness of this and all that.

Would be nice if you talked about active/passive PoE as that's a trap for young players (maybe that's coming in part 2?) and the second hand market for ex-enterprise PoE switches. I picked up a C3750G-24PS recently which is a pretty good switch capable of 802.3af on every port. Got it for sub $100 AUD at auction.

Now if only there was a standard for co-running fiber and power. It'd be nice to purchase a standardized cable that you could use to power any fiber devices. That'd be as close as you'd be able to get for a fully future proofed home network.

Question! Do all standard POE (at, af, bt) switches negotiate for power? Or is power sent down the line wether or not the device wants it? I agree. One of the best channels around. I prefer Level1Techs over it's other KZfaq competitors. Honestly, some of these networking solutions may take a little more involvement and time to configure, and deploy. This is much more than the regular consumer is willing to put time into. As for those mesh systems. I don't know if I quite see it the way you do. For example, I use product from a company called TP-Link. It's the first time I'm been exposed to them, and it isn't the best, but quite honestly it surprised me how well it works and it's reliability and price aren't bad. My house is roughly 1,500 sq/ft but in a family of four we have over 25 different devices that fight with my router to see which one get's the best network connection. My router is a very high-end 802.11ac model with five antenna's, but even that struggled and unfortunately 5 ghz AC only works effectively on one-level. Well, graduating to a three-way mesh system solved all my wifi deadspots and now I reliably connect at 100-200 megabits/sec in each room. Very happy about this development. I also make use of a TP-link network hub, and 13 terabyte NAS to store all my data - works very well.

and here I just bought me a used non-poe 24 port switch cause I wanted a fanless design with a bunch of ports and didn't really have any plans for poe devices until I realized I could potentially have a poe powered rpi cluster...

Wendell, I wish you mentioned the older non IEEE 24v POE standard. The unifi APs you had in the video use that type of POE standard. AFAIK, there aren't any switches that autodetect for 24v devices which most likely fry non 24v POE devices. I've only used 24v injectors so I wouldn't know. Might be worth mentioning in the next video :)

hi, would like to know, if the Power Devices rated at Camera only: PoE+ (802.3at Class 4) or 12V DC @ 0.92A: 11W, how much voltage will draw from the POE+ port to the Camera, if it is a standard voltage draw from the POE+ port that is 42v, will it affect the camera or burn.How the power device (camera) will manage to draw its required voltage from the POE+ port.

Hey, so I've got a 1990 Nissan 240SX, and I want to replace every connector with a quick release version. When i say every connector, I mea every electrical connector, every water hose, every air duct etc... Basically I want to be able to change a head gasket in less then 5 minutes. At the moment I'm focused on electrical connections. Spark Plug wires are already quick release but I was thinking stuff like O2 sensors, anything that involves a wiring harness, I want electrical connections and data connections to be quick release and I'm considering using Ethernet wires for said applications. I would obviously use Cat5 STP with an added extra braided thermal insulating layer. I've got alot to think about but, do you think it could work? I mean, what kind of watts can flow on a Cat5 ethernet cable if I used half the wires for positive and the other half for negative?

I've been running power over ethernet cables since 2005 😀 just not standard... For big local networks lets say small village we used to run 110 volts (less loss over long distance) to power the switches with adapters ofc. In a house, you could use old PC PSU and just connect the 12V from the PSU to the ethernet cable. 🤷🏻‍♂️😂 That's as cheap as it gets. Again, before connecting something it's good to test for power loss.

I had hoped to see a little more in-depth explantion of the standard - which wires cary what and why, active/passive and potential risks - It's dry subjectmatter but I would have enjoyed an explanation a la Wendell. No biggie. PoE is excellent. Looking forward to the mesh network video, I just hope It'll be done with FOSS, I don't care about some Cisco solution. :)

Wendell, Is it safe to plug a non-POE ethernet cable into the Eugenius switch? does it somehow detect it does not need power?

I use a Netgear FS728TP and APs for my wireless. All devices that need faster is connected with cable.

I kinda like PoE, but did anyone ever thought of manufacturing switches with just 15W per port max but on PoE++ type 4 standard? Of cause on the other hand there need to be PoE++ type 4 clients, even if they just draw 10W. It is a real difference in efficiency. Please go ahead in an upcomming video and do the maths. It becomes clear when you think of cameras, WAPs, doorbells, phones and clients like the RPi all connected to 20 to 50 meter cables.

We have run into oddness that was traced back to a switch being overloaded. Also be aware of the quality of our cable and the length of the cable run. DC does not like long distance runs.

KNX is a nice and open standard so you aren't relying on a single company but yeah its expensive for a power user to get the software tools to config it yourself :/

Beware of Copper Clad Aluminum (CCA) cables! Especially for PoE! "Cat 5e/6/6a/7" CCA cables can be found everywhere, even though the TIA standard for Cat 5e/6/6a/7 does not include CCA! If you ever have a contractor installing wires (and you know PoE may be used), please make sure pure bare copper is stated in the contract for clarity.

Do POE injectors extend the range of the ethernet cables? Say, I have a run that's already at 100m and I add a POE injector, will it give me a total of 200m of effective data transmitting ethernet?

It pisses me off that no one makes a PoE injector media converter. They make PoE-powered media converters, which makes no sense. Would be nice to have what I mentioned for the sake of running something like a wireless AP far away on a fiber run, and then you would only need one device plugged into power.

This is one reason (among others) why network cables are getting as fat as your thumb. The US NEC limits premises powered communications to 60 volts or less (top end of the POE standards are usually around 57 volts) and amperage based on NEC table 725.144. Which I doubt many IT people are even aware of. When you start bundling these cables in wireways going in and out of IT or server rooms, you hit that ampacity ceiling fairly quickly and when combined with length of run, you're forced to up-size your wire. Sometimes substantially.

I actually hacked togather a solution for poe. I split the the poe cables in the ethernet and shovved them in tha battery bank near the router and run the powerbank online. theres only 4 devices on the router anf the battery bank does 60 watt total.i;m surprised its it working still.

Be aware EOP and arc fault breaker do not mix!!!! The EOP will cause the arc fault breaker to trip!

Meanwhile in Germany a lot of people use ethernet over powerline. But ngl, 100W over my ethernet cable over anything that isn't just a few meters sounds kinda scary to me. I mean it's probably fine with the right cable if it's a permanent installation, but I've seen so many abused LAN cables....
