In this lecture we examine the role religion plays in the life of the individual; we are not concerned with the validity of any set of religious beliefs, nor the role of organized religion in society. Rather we build on the views of thinkers like William James, Wittgenstein, Dostoevsky, and Maslow to examine questions such as what exactly is religion?; why the central role in all civilizations throughout history?; what is the relationship between science and religion?; and can an atheist adhere to a religion?

Excellent video. I used to call myself a "new atheist" a decade ago. Looking back, what alleviated my existential pangs were ideological narratives which were substantially no different from religious mythology. I believed in the myth that scientific progress is inherently good, and that the light of science would dispel the age-old slumber and delusion caused by the religions. We even had our own prophets (Dawkins, Hitchens, et al.) and scripture (The Skeptic's Dictionary by Randi, Shermer, etc.). I'm really glad to be out of that box now.

I would say that school of life is a fine introduction to sociology, filosofy, culture and psychology. It has some fine points. For the layman, School of life is great, because it offers comfort and encourages learning. Without patronizing people. They basically inspire people to be better versions of them selves and have an open heart. They do a great job at what they do! Frankly the whole thing about pitching them against each other seem to me very absurd. The very fact that people who watch School of life ends up here I take as a proof their effectiveness. School of life is a gate-way-drug for philosophy and enlightenment, and that's great. The world need this theese days!

The Great Creator The Great Creator Saturates and Surrounds all Existence. Matter, Energy, Knowledge, Space, and Time are just different viewpoints and concepts of the Great Creator. They all are just components of the Great Creator from different perspectives. There are a Great many Gods, and Gods are just imaginary mythical personages of worship. Gods are not Creators. Gods and Religion has been the failed and futile attempt to search for the Great Creator and to the understanding of creation. And creation is only the rearrangement of Matter. We just call that rearrangement, creation. Matter is not created from nothing; Matter has always existed. And knowledge is not created in the human brain. The brain was only designed and created to receive Knowledge. Truth is all that truly exists. Other than Truth there is just the understood concept of an absence. Even lies, whether intended to deceive or not, are Fantasy. Lies remain in the Fantasy realms, in the nonexistent realm. And as for those who are in the Fantasy World, thinking that the creation of the universe and life was created without intelligence, are in the prison of fantasy. True Science has proven the complex intelligent design and engineering of all creation. It is only intelligence that makes Creation posable. This is just words to the honest and wise: honesty and understanding is the only true belief. Without honesty and understanding we do not know what to believe. To accept others opinion of the truth without proving it to yourself; it is being deceived it is not believing. We must understand to believe. Until Next time; Sweet Dreams: truth will solve all our problems before we create them; and ignore or reject the truth; problems will multiply all by themselves; those problems will need no help. Have a great and a meaningful life if it is at all possible. Just whispers, of the Ghost of Reality.

You have managed to say something I have been trying to say for several decades but have failed to say as well as you say it. During my lifetime (born 1944), definitions of “religion” have been promoted by people with an agenda, usually the desire to impose their ideas about the universe on everybody else. A perusal of English-language literature from before the eighteenth century, however, suggests a broader understanding and usage of the word. The definition I have been using for most of my life is, the sum of those beliefs, practices and prohibitions that pertain to a person’s understanding of the highest powers of the universe. I got the impression that my parents religion was one thing; their denominational affiliation was another. I got the impression that they saw the organization of which they were members, not as a religion but as an association of people who considered themselves called to a specific emphasis or emphases among the many ideas about morality, which religious practices are appropriate and which are not, and what religious prohibitions to adopt for ourselves. My parents emphasis on personal religion, however, led them to very different conclusions about whether or how to impose those religious prohibitions on others. Whereas a small but vocal minority in western society (in North America, I think it may be about 15 %) advocate the use of discrimination, intimidation, coercion or civil laws to impose their religious prohibitions on everybody else, my parents eschewed the use of those methods in favor of encouraging people to consider the evidence (see Hebrews 1:1) of a spiritual dimension in the universe. My parents are now deceased but they seem to have been a minority even among the members of their own denomination. There is evidence that the people who created that organization were dedicated to promoting personal (in contrast to institutional) religion. But there also seems to be a universal tendency for religious organizations to devolve into hierarchy, creedalism and dogmatism. If anyone reading my lament has ideas about how to use organization to encourage people AND minimize dogmatism at the same time, PLEASE share those ideas with us.

kikie110, I'm not willing to punish dogmatists but I do try to encourage people to desist from rewarding them. When my wife graduated from high school, her experiences had been such that she thought (her words), "Churches are places where people go to tell other people what to do--or to pay the preacher to tell other people what to do." Fortunately, there are clergy who are dedicated to preaching a gospel of hope WITHOUT telling people what to believe or what to do and not tdo. I just wish more people would "vote with their feet" and attend services where telling people what to think for what to do is not part of the methodology.

I've been trying to solve this problem for a while now. Incorporation of psychedelics as sacraments is THE only method that seems to have any chance as a safeguarding mechanism against ossification and dogmatic rigidity. Such a sacrament would be, by nature, a totally personal input of experience and information from outside of the structure of belief. An analysis of the effects of psychedelics through the psychometrics of personality theory demonstrated that even a one time use raised people's levels of trait openness, openness to ideas/experiences and aesthetic appreciation. I do believe that it would need to be handled with an appropriate amount of structure, otherwise, there would be no cohesion of collective narrative.
@rogermetzger7335
@rogermetzger7335 7 жыл бұрын
Mr. Camlin, Well, at least you are trying to think of ways to solve the problem! My parents were very interested in evangelism but the core principles they were trying to promote included the principle that if they wouldn't want someone else's religion imposed on them by discrimination or civil laws, then they shouldn't use those methods to promote their own religious beliefs. Because I am a theist--and perhaps also because I have a lifestyle that is generally considered "conservative"--I think I have a better chance of influencing people who consider themselves "conservatives" (compared to the influence of people who describe themselves as agnostic or atheist). At the same time, even people who call themselves agnostics and atheists can point out to the people who style themselves "evangelical" that true evangelism is about encouraging faith--not about getting people to do or not do things.

@quaidemckenzie6146 Yes indeed. Just because an old story appears in an old book doesn't make it true, or God inspired. Jesus Christ actually countered the Adam and Eve myth, with the parable of the Prodigal Son, which clearly explains that God never kicked anyone out of Heaven, but that it was OUR foolish choice. Neither did he teach that the crucifixion was supposed to be some kind of magical atonement for sin, or that he was the ONLY " Son of God ". He taught a completely different God of perfect love, who judges no one, than the made up vicious bloodthirsty figure depicted in the OT. He taught non - judgment , forgiveness, and love as the way back to God.

That's not a definition of true religion, although it's what passes for some religions. A true religion, such as Buddhism, for example, is based on the Buddhas experience, and teaching of reality. We assume this world is real, but its not. We assume time is real, but it's not. We assume we could be bodies, but that's impossible. In other words we believe in an illusion of reality.

that's an old chestnut. there is no self. it doesn't exist. the world around you only exists in your mind based on the input of sensory stimuli. to exist is to be stable, unchanging. if the body is constantly changing then it doesn't exist and is not under your control. if it is not under your control then it is not yours. cannot be claimed as you. what is it that we refer to as the self? it is of course the body. same fundamental mistake made by descarte who said " i think therefor IAM. sorry renae but thanks for playing our game. btw EVERYTHING in the universe is constantly changing and unstable, therefor IT does not exist. to solve this conundrum, enters the grandest illusion of all time, an eternal unchanging GOD who will give the mind the only measure of the security for which it seeks. since we live in fear of death we invent an all- powerful GOD who will SAVE us if only we belong to the right church.

For what I understand is that humans created religion. Now that I am older I see religion as a way to control others. I feel that there's a universal, creative Force of the universe. For all my life of being "religious" has shown me that those religious leaders are racist, bigots, and mostly think of their benefits. It's a man idea with the intention to bring changes for the "good" of mankind, but failed to make those changes because of their lack of understanding of the human behavior. We each have a whole different mind, feelings and emotions. These religious leaders are more for themselves like every human being is. Their desire is to maintain a group loyal to them and their institutions. That's why they have failed to bring changes to humanity in a positive way. Now that we are able to get more knowledge on the subject people are beginning to leave their congregations and find a life of their own. I am one of those. No more lies and control. One need to look at the planet's history and what is being going on for centuries with their control and power. Abuses and crimes against humanity.

Religion may give soothing answers to questions both science and our minds cannot. We have an innate feeling of eternal justice. If this world is unjust and now that there is no cure for this because of egocentric human nature, what would comfort our souls against such injustices? So comes religion.

"Religion is a heart of the heartless world and a soul of the souless condition." As Karl Marx expressed it. He believed religion shifts people in wrong direction, offering misleading answers to important questions of justice and morality. And you are right by pointing that people often turn to religion in search of better answers to deal with a cruel world. Marx's idea was that it's important to search for truth, but also be cautious about answers we get. Dialectical Materialism - "ascension from earth to heaven".

Religion is a cultural system of behaviors and practices, world views, sacred texts, holy places, ethics, and societal organisation that relate humanity to what an anthropologist has called "an order of existence". Different religions may or may not contain various elements, ranging from the "divine", "sacred things", "faith", a "supernatural being or supernatural beings" or "...some sort of ultimacy and transcendence that will provide norms and power for the rest of life." Religious practices may include rituals, sermons, commemoration or veneration (of God or deities), sacrifices, festivals, feasts, trances, initiations, funerary services, matrimonial services, meditation, prayer, music, art, dance, public service, or other aspects of human culture. Religions have sacred histories and narratives, which may be preserved in sacred scriptures, and symbols and holy places, that aim mostly to give a meaning to life. Religions may contain symbolic stories, which are sometimes said by followers to be true, that have the side purpose of explaining the origin of life, the Universe, and other things. Traditionally, faith, in addition to reason, has been considered a source of religious beliefs. There are an estimated 10,000 distinct religions worldwide. About 84% of the world's population is affiliated with one of the five largest religions, namely Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism or forms of folk religion. With the onset of the modernization of and the scientific revolution in the western world, some aspects of religion have cumulatively been criticized. Though the religiously unaffiliated, including atheism (the rejection of belief in the existence of deities) and agnosticism (the belief that the truth of certain claims - especially metaphysical and religious claims such as whether God, the divine or the supernatural exist - are unknown and perhaps unknowable), have grown globally, many of the unaffiliated still have various religious beliefs. About 16% of the world's population is religiously unaffiliated. The study of religion encompasses a wide variety of academic disciplines, including theology, comparative religion and social scientific studies. Theories of religion offer various explanations for the origins and workings of religion.

What is dharma or religion ? Answer is there are some of the fundamentals about dharma… (A) First, dharma is the natural characteristic or inherent value of something. The dharma of fire is to burn and the dharma of a bird is to fly. (B) Second, the yogis say that human dharma is based on expansion (vistara), flow of mind (rasa), and service (seva). Vistara means expanding our psychic boundaries to include one and all; rasa means keeping steadiness of mind; and seva means caring for and serving others. (C) Another way of describing human dharma lies in the 10 characteristics of dharma: 1. Dhrti (patience) 2. Ks’ama (forgiveness) 3. Dhama (self-control) 4. Asteya (non-stealing) 5. Shaoca (cleanliness) 6. Indriyanigraha (control over organs) 7. Dhii (benevolent intellect) 8. Vidya’ (spiritual knowledge) 9. Satyam (benevolent truthfulness) 10. Akrodha (non-anger) Certainly, each of the above points is a discussion unto itself. As we all have a general understanding of what these points are, suffice to say here that the more we adhere to these tenets, the greater we are following our manava dharma, or human dharma.

Religio literally means "re-link." The personal aspect is relinking one's mind and body, or relinking one's actions to the mental paradigm of reality. That anxiety you mention is the passion (pathos) of our suffering as living beings. Logos is the mental paradigm, logically refined into symbolic systems of words. Ethos is the standard of integrity in your actions, judged by the mental paradigm, and this gives a person one's reputation. Do you live according to your word? Do you speak with integrity? That is the personal aspect. The social aspect becomes the communal narrative, a communal standard by which the community judges the integrity of our personal actions in view of the communal code. Therefore, my definition is "the relationship you have with the story your tell yourself." "One" is a single person, a couple, a family, band, tribe, cult, political party...etc. Atheism is still a religion in this definition as is Agnosticism, and political unity and power is also religion. Urban lifestyle first began in temple networks that became city-states. Kingship came from on high, according to Mesopotamian myth, and this means that the priest-kings supported warrior kings to protect the pilgrimage/trade routes that fed the temple complexes. Religion was the first political system. Separation of Church and State is a misnomer, as if it was going to be any different. "...same as the old boss!"

Actually, I think the more science progresses the closer it comes to defining mysticism. Emergentism looks at the different players or micro structures that self organize to make a property or law, as in the molecules of water forming a lattice and becoming ice with the property of rigidity. The emergent law will vanish if we try to take the object apart (ice in this case) unlike Newtonian fundamental laws...but with broken symmetry the roles are reversed at the quantum level and the emergent law of rigidity gives rise to what we know by ordering the quantum particles and allowing the Newtonian laws. We haven't the computing power right now for the calculations but someday it might be possible. The law (religious awe or faith) caused by the micro structures self-organizing (humans) can seem unconnected with the parts, it has novelty, and is mysterious when seen from the vantage point of a lower level structure. It's dynamic processes that are needed to make it work, not static mapping.

As a person who was raised as an Atheist, I am quite sure religious belief is nothing more than the extended phenotype of our gene expression. We have evolved parts of our brains that foster religious belief in all forms. In our earliest beginnings it served as a way for early humans to come together in social structures that in turn increased the likelihood of our group survival and propagation of genes that were selected over time to where we see ourselves today. Unfortunately in modern times we no longer need this behavior and in fact it has enabled a small group of people control large groups of people for nefarious agendas. Unless we as a society "unfuck ourselves" religion will continue to destroy us.

I don't think it's fair to put blanket statements on why people choose religious lifestyles, when 10 randomly selected people who follow these lifestyles, especially in our age of critical thinking, will give 10 different answers as to why they have chosen religion. For me, religion helps me to answer the question of "who am I?" by bringing me closer to the day to day practices of my ancestors. I say the same prayers and follow the same rituals that my ancestors have for over 1300 years, and Sunday mornings are a time of personal inflection when I bring my consciousness back to how my ancestors would have wanted me to live. Some people like me do it for philosophical reasons, other look for other existential meanings, some for social reasons, some for family relations, and in the present day I've seen many people my age turn to religion in reaction to far-left social movements and a desire to conserve what always has been.

The past (to my mind) should not have an inherent monopoly on my ideology, just because my grandparents believed X thing their entire lives didn't stop them from being incredulous fools for doing so. I give none of my ancestors any leeway for their part in perpetuating idiocy, as I hope the future gives us no quarter for retaining such ideological dead weight.

@@bacchante1 The whole point is that nobody including the Religious studies cannot present a clear definition of what the concept "Religion" refers to. Firstly because the term itself is extremely unclear and its literal meaning is nothing but "Reconnection" and the author of that Latin originated term does not clarify what kind of reconnection it is all about. So most of the people suppose its about god/deity for some reason. While in practice NO actual world known denomination/spiritual teaching etc calls itself "Religion". For ex. Judaism uses the word Torah which means "Teaching" or Dat which originates from "knowledge" but never "Reconnection". The Arabic word "Din" mostly referes to "Law" when it comes to define Islam. Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism define themselves as "Dharma" which has a large spector of meanings which exclude "Reconnection". As a whole the world known religions do not fully share the same common features to put them in one cathegory. There's a significant diversity of different characteristics among all of them. So to conclude, the concept "Religion" is just a confusing, sensless and outdated cliche, which is destined to disappear due to its uselessness.

@@gleb202 Since it doesn't self-define as a religion, should we call it one anyway, despite the resistance from some Buddhists to classify it as such? And while the term 'religion' (or 'teaching', or 'dharma') may well have a book definition rooted in linguistics, I am referring to the more commonly used vernacular, where following a philosophy or lifestyle is seen as different than worship or belief in a sentient God(s) or godlike being that lays down rules, and/or can supposedly intervene in what happens in your life if you appease them. So if, for example, you say you follow a 'Wiccan philosophy', you might be assumed to believe in the principles of 'harm none', the preservation of nature, etc.... while 'Wiccan religion' might reasonably lead one to infer you believe in any or all associated Deities.

Very well established view. Can be augmented with a little bit push about how belief, faith is different than religion and as you expressed here with quote of Dostoyevski, religion is mostly about masses it can not function properly just being inside of an individual, human interactions are its liferoot The legal philosopher Ronald Dworkin believed the religions real purpose is to become a law system instead of becoming a shell for personal beliefs and emotions. He believed American legal system, if properly realigned, can be a godless religion to comfort us. I disagree with him about separating religion from God but the point he directed seems legit expecially for Islam in my opinion. A religion has all the powers and means to establish indispensable law system much better than any government because religions' purpose was easing the life of all who believes in itself, while governments real interest is to keep their governance intact. There is a war between religion and others but those others are not atheists or other religions, they are institutions and governments. Any government and institution will have to have a dispute with religion sooner or later. Being law itself is the only way to restrain governments from being destructive to their citizens and themselves without need of real bloodshed

Once you overcome the fear of death and make peace with it, then there's absolutely no need for the existential questions. You can make sense of the universe by looking to science for answers to many of the questions. But rather than do all of that, find ways to expand personal freedoms--recognizing that organized religion carries with it stern attempts to remove personal freedoms.

The debate about RELIGION and man's need of it to "LIVE", refers to the "HARMONY" that is needed for ease of existence. The dismantling of such notion, is what the Egyptian Pharoah foresaw, after those detained to prevented them from overtaking the continent, gave up and wanted out 'o there with "I don't get mad, I get even in mind". The confusion that is so widespread today was orchestrated "AFTER THE EXODUS" with the theatrical PRODUCTION of "The GARDEN OF EDEN", it marked a SEVERANCE from the GOD that was THE THEME OF STUDY AND CONTEMPLATION of the Egyptian "SCHOOLS OF HIGHER LEARNING" (the UPDATED "TEACHINGS" are geared at "REPAIRING THAT SEVERANCE"). The narrations that begins right AFTER EGYPT, introduced "GOD IN HEAVEN" suggesting that being an INDIVIDUAL IN OUTERSPACE", the "PLAY BY PLAY" of THAT narration is at the center of HUMANITIES mental mayhem, as in "How can "A LOVING ALMIGHTY BEING BE ENVOLVED IN SUCH HATEFUL ATROCITIES", then they copied PROVERBS, PROFOUND PRAYERS (PSALMS) and others that was the Egyptian Reign's daily occupations, along with "THE CREATOR'S MOUTHPIECE" "THE MESSIAH", to call it "GOD'S WORD". When it was all written and edited by man with nefarious intent. The trick used was including the mental make-up of "their" being, talking about "A" "FALLEN ANGEL", a RED CREATURE. As God was "INDIVIDUALIZED", so was that "Red Creature" later known as Satan. In those writings He even announced "His" intention to end up taking over the reign of "THE GOD OF EGYPT". He DID, for the most part, by quite a few folks still uplifting "The Chosen", even though their ATROCITIES goes on till this day, even by Proxy. The debate is perpetated by the misguidance of "The Church" and the clones of the "Red" being that cleverly indoctrined His conquered to view them as "WHITE", even between a snow-white hair an shirt. A mothers/fathers mental constant transmit to the fetus, the offspring's inherits such transmition. Science tries to figure it all out, under influential promptings.

Jordan Peterson, in his book "Maps of Meaning", describes Religion as a stage of development of the articulation of meaningful knowledge: Imitation of patterns of behaviour Symbol Myth and Narrative Religion Philosophy Science Science is inherently religious, as it is embedded in a value hierarchy that places truth above all other values. If we can recognize this, we can finally bridge the gap between "is" and "ought", from a Humean perspective.

Language is quite obviously an ability of our species' biology (sapiens), like flying is a function of birds' biology. We're all born with it. That's why we all have language, no exception whatsoever. We learn a specific form of language in childhood. Religion too, certainly. I'm unaware of an example of human society that existed without a religion for any length to time. Of particular interest is to study and if you can one day experience first hand the animist beliefs of primitive peoples because this is probably the 'original' religion which was practiced by all mankind for 95% of our history. Language and religion are part of our inherent intellectual and spiritual faculties which uniquely distinguish us from all other mammals.

@@littlefab5389 “There are those who don’t believe in God and yet do good. There are those who believe in God and kill for that belief; those who prepare for war because they claim they want peace, and so on. So one has to ask oneself what need there is to believe at all in anything, though this doesn’t deny the extraordinary mystery of life. But belief is a word, a thought, and this is not the thing, anymore than your name is actually you. Through experience you hope to touch the truth of your belief, to prove it to yourself, but this belief conditions your experience. It isn’t that the experience comes to prove the belief, but rather that the belief begets the experience. Your belief in God will give you the experience of what you call God. You will always experience what you believe and nothing else.” - Jiddu Krishnamurti. Most religious person ever and did not belong to any man made religion or established god name like Allah or Jesus. He saw why belief has no place in reality. I agree with your first two sentences... if we assume that is actually the objective of religion. However, i don't think that's the real purpose of religion. I think it exists to occupy the space (as a placeholder) in the Absence of a sufficient perception of the nature of reality, and in place of better answers that could be found by leaving that space empty until inscrutable answers are discovered, as a matter of principle. The creators and protectors of religion don't want us finding the real answers, they want us following a carefully crafted narrative, so that they can benefit by our submission. But Math didn't exist until 'creation' created it (through living beings like us). What we know as Math is entirely ours. It is our attempt to establish a system that can be used to reliably and consistently measure and calculate our world's features, deduce prior causes, and make useful predictions about the future. 'Creation' implies a 'creator', but no evidence exists to support that implication or assertion. In fact, 'existence' (which is actually mostly occurrence) has created itself, through its own "mysterious ways," from an inexplicable origin, that no one has been able to effectively comprehend or communicate.

Science claims evolution created the species, which is impossible, it has never been observed that one species became another species. Science is decided by money available for research, not by truth. "The creators and protectors of science don't want us finding the real answers, they want us following a carefully crafted narrative, so that they can benefit by our submission." Of course I would agree, that much of worldly religion is in fact well designed propaganda. But the Bible is a rather reliable history book, when it comes to occurrences in the Middle East. There is visible proof for the Egyptians, that Moses would led the Hebrews from. There indeed was Roman occupation of Israel, during the year zero. Crucifixion was a punishment Romans would use very often. So one can conclude, the Bible contains truth. Whether the Bible is crafted propaganda, as you claim, there is no proof for that in the Old Testament. No one could profit, from what the prophets wrote, these even where very critical towards leaders of religion, and to religion in general. The most important part of this video is the bullet point @ 7:55 "What is the proper way of living this life?" Most if not all religions are systems of control. They have precepts that must be obeyed by the adherents of the religion. If the precepts are obeyed, the adherent will be rewarded, and if the precepts are not obeyed, the adherent will receive punishment. Some form of authority needs to be invoked in order to convince the adherent to obey. This authority can be a god that has supernatural powers, or a human who ultimately becomes united with the supernatural, thus gaining supernatural status. Bottom Line: Religion is a way of controlling human behavior, and convincing them to give money to the religious order on a regular basis. It's all about the Benjamins, baby. But it's mostly about controlling behavior -- the money just makes their task worth doing. Religion also plays a large roll in preserving the status quo, which tends to lead to a stagnant social order, and eventually to a sick and maladjusted society. Religion is also largely responsible for the contempt with which we view other humans (humans in groups other than our groups, i.e., "them"). Religion tends to keep groups apart rather than bringing them together, and major problems need most groups acting together, not fighting among one another.

Think about the question that was asked at 6:35. Does that sound vaguely familiar with what's been going on over the past 2 years, and how they're trying to control everybody with fear. Actually it's not even "TRYING" anymore, it's "doing" at this point and people are letting it happen with such ease to themselves. People are acting like every single thing that happens, can, and will result in their death on the spot. I've always wondered what's the point of living if you're already acting like you're dead. I never even thought that until all this bs began.

Allah - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Knowledge [throne] extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Quran 2. 255 please study Islam .....

Seems incorrect to me that everyone has a fear of death and so seeks comfort in religion. Death has never been something I have feared. It would have been an inconvenience when I was busy with a task, and a hardship for the loved ones surviving. For me religion provides the structure to understand life which is much more than what our senses tell us. Now in my old age I look back and marvel at the miracles we thought were hardships that all played key roles in bringing my wife and I to who we are today. We are quite content. We believe in that which is excellent and worthy of praise and that works. We believe a new and more exciting existence is in store for us after this one is done. As a matter of fact I have given the Powers That Be a request that we be allowed to live in a cabin in the woods near a lake and stream while we acclimatize ourselves to the next life - given that that was the dream home that escaped us in this one Are we nuts? Possibly. We choose to believe something that is fantastic and gives us hope. If we are wrong we will never know. How can we lose?

I refuse to be classed as atheist, nor agnostic or religious. Can I please be left out of this categorisation? I seek to understand and accept I wont. Not gnostic either. People might invent their little stereotypes and gods and philosophies. But how should they be able to class others by their own unproven realities?

It's easier to let someone else solve your existential problems for you than to do it yourself; I hope that more people can see how absurd it is to try and define themselves with words that ultimately do not encompass the human experience, that there could even be a word that could.
