What is rev-matching in a manual transmission? The idea is if you want to shift to a lower gear in a manual transmission vehicle, rev-matching allows for a smooth shift. For a given vehicle speed, the higher the gear you’re in, the lower your engine’s speed. So to downshift from 4th to 3rd the engine speed is going to increase. To compensate for this, the shift is as follows: you push in the clutch, blip the throttle (raising the engine speed to match the next gear), shift from 4th to 3rd as your engine speed climbs, and then let out the clutch. It’s easier on your vehicle, and doesn’t upset the car’s balance while shifting.

I learned rev matching in car from riding motorcycle. If we ride/drive so much, It's kinda intuitive to have a smoother downshift, tbh. I rev match back then even without knowing there's a thing called rev match lol. Simply because i want a smoother down shift. As soon as i understand how clutch, throttle, and gear shifting works, i kinda knew intuitively how to blip and have a smoother downshift. And apparently, it's called rev matching, which sounds cool 😂

@Onyourbiketoo

@@coreyduma325 whilst DDC is not necessary with a synchro gear box, just like ‘rev matching’ is not necessary, it is beneficial to a smooth transition. At 3.50 he explains that the middle sector of DDC will transition from everything running at different speeds to everything running at same speed. At 5.25 onwards he explains that with the clutch released everything is at a different speed. The synchro will then match 3rd gear speed (going at one speed lower than engine speed) to the output gear (which is going at diff speed) so it’s all about synchronising the teeth, not the speeds. Then let the clutch out and the 3 speeds (engine, layshaft, diff) will equalise. If you let clutch up in neutral then engine and trans will be blipped all to the same speed which you will forecast to be the speed needed to prevent surge from the diff/drive. The collar on the synchro will only match the position of the teeth it will not change the speed of the layshaft up or down. Single blip on engine will take care of most of the surge by a downshift whilst a blip under DDC will put all surges, including trans surge, to the bare minimum. Jason clarifies that synchro boxes don’t need DDC, just like a single clutch and blip is not needed but it all helps .. hope that helps you investigate further and rewatch Jason’s excellent video… he really is very good.

And is a skill any trucker who drives a stick shifter have, they always need to rev match the transmission to get in gear, otherwise they "miss" the gear, they have two options, both rev matching, the first one is double clutching (double clutch at first gear, for upshift clutch neutral clutch gear, for downshift, clutch neutral throttle clutch gear), and "floating" (double clutch at first gear, rev, and just before letting go the throttle, pull the stick and let it down to the next gear on the right rpms, if you "miss" one, you can't just press the clutch and put it on gear, you need to rev match your speed and gear to the propper rpms, once you dominate it, is pretty easy to do

If you want to reduce wear on the synchros as well, let out the clutch shift to neutral then blip the throttle, then clutch in slip into gear smoothly no resistant clutch out. Or if you are sure you can do it over and over again that everytime the gear stick slides in without any effort, you dont need to use the clutch either. The clutch is a compensation for inaccuracies, and for starting from a standstill

The synchro matches the speed of the gears inside the gearbox so you can shift more easily. It has nothing to do with matching the engine speed to the vehicle speed in the next gear; that is always up to you. You _can_ do it by being gentle with the clutch and just wait for the engine to be slowed down or sped up by the gearbox, in which case you *will* either lurch forward or experience a slowdown, or you can rev-match and make your ride smoother.

It is going to lurch, no matter what you do, because the engine needs energy to get to the higher rpm, and without rev matching, that energy is going to be taken from the wheels, therefore the wheels will slow down by a little. The intensity of the lurch depends on how slowly you release the clutch, but it's going to be there to some degree in all cases.

I've never understood this at all, surely if your revs are causing a lurch on the engine when re-engage the clutch, then you are mis-timing your gear shifts, or you altogether don't need to shift. Alternatively if you re-engage aggressively by yanking your foot off the pedal, then the clutch doesnt have time to do it's job which is to smoothly match the revs of the engine. The only scenario I can make sense of this practise, is drivers of the golden age of classic Formula One cars, where you need quick gear changes and you are mostly at very high revs through fast corners.
@este_marco
@este_marco 26 күн бұрын
rev matching makes inexistent the abrupt engine brake caused by the rpm's being too low compared to the car's speed when re-engaging the clutch. it keeps the balance of the car stable when downshifting at the entry of a corner and saves a bit the clutch as a biproduct.
@tommeiner9983
@tommeiner9983 20 күн бұрын
It's not the job of the clutch to even out multiple thousand rpm differences between the engine and the gearbox while driving. Even in regular driving downshifting without rev matching is only smooth if you're constantly braking in the meantime. But for example if you're just maintaining speed and have to shift down because of an incline, then it's pretty much necessary to rev match.

Not really. Most people don't even know such thing exists & continue shifting down without rev matching.

My vehicle has an unsynchronised NV3500 transmission. I have to double clutch and rev match every shift.

Have been doing this ever since I've learned how to drive both car and bike. Everyone who notices this technique calls me a showoff.😅

I just rev match by slipping the clutch. My feet are big, so blipping the throttle while holding the break is very annoying for me to do. No, it doesn't increase wear on the clutch. No, it isn't bad for the transmission or motor. I'm not sitting there slipping the clutch until it starts burning, and as such, I am not putting any undue wear on it.

The video is about regular rev matching, without pressing the brake.

It went clutch in shift gear and let go of the clutch was wrong so, do cluch in shift gear rev a bit and let go of the clutch is that correct too before letting the clutch go rev a bit and let go of the clutch is it correct. Correct me if I'm wrong 😅

I did this in manual bike, but to be honest i prefer automatic or at least semi automatic if we talking about cars.

basically, you don’t need to rev match if your slowing down or coming to a stop but it you want to get to a lower gear and maintain speed then You wanna be even match

Pretty much, but it depends on what rpm you shift at. The higher the rev range, the bigger the rpm difference gets between two gears. If you're doing some "spirited driving", you'll probably start shifting down way earlier at a much higher rpm than usual. Then rev matching is still beneficial.

Wait, are people driving manuals just randomly shifting into gears without accelerating or braking first? You do that on a motorcycle and learn real fast to rev match. I guess when you start right away with cars, you don't learn these things.

If you blip the throttle with the clutch engaged, that damages the clutch over time. Listen to what he said .. he's "blipping" the throttle with the clutch IN ...
