What is Shoutcasting? The Story Behind The Voices of Esports

Casting is an important part of the esports experience and it helps both entertain and inform the viewer. Because, let’s be honest, some of these games can be a little overwhelming to outsiders.
But esports didn’t always have live casting the way they do now. Back in the day, you were lucky to have a cast to listen to at all, and if you did, sometimes it didn't sound great.
Casting and the esports broadcast have come a long way from the scene's earliest days. And without it, esports wouldn't be what it is today.

Correction: The play at 8:09 does not feature the voices of Anders Blume and Auguste "Semmler" Massonnat. In fact, Anders and Jason Kaplan are on the mic. Sorry about that.

Tribes itself was innovative in so many ways, that the community also paved the way for online shoutcasting was something quite special too. Tribes 2 brought it up a notch when someone developed T2tv where the game was recorded into small chunks and streamed to listeners so they could watch the match & hear the commentary at the same time. I have converted a lot of old t2tv recordings on my KZfaq channel. Even have one of the original tribes world championship matches converted as well (a bit harder to find!)

Great video as always, theScore esports! One thing though: "back in the day" before stream services like Twitch, it was not uncommon to have live shoutcasts in tournaments. Back in 2003-2005, large Counter-Strike tournaments like the CPL or WSG could be watched live in-game via an HLTV spectator address. The tournament would also provide a link to a Winamp (or other) shoutcast, which could be listened to live. The most dominant producer of shoutcasts was the TSN (Team Sportscast Network). After the match, gaming moviemakers such as myself could download both the replay (demo) and the shoutcast to be used in movies, e.g. a fragmovies. A TV-like production was rare and did not really become a thing until Twitch, like you say in your video, but live shoutcasting existed well before then (presumably spawning out of Tribal, as you stated). Granted, it wasn't found with every tournament, but in my experience it was more common to listen live than to download the cast afterwards, which you suggested.

Have you guys considered looking into the rise of speedrunning in esports? This year alone we started seeing some of the first actual prize pools for tournaments through restream networks like SpeedGaming on Twitch. Zelda3 randomizer in particular has a massive following, as does Super Metroid randomizer. I bring it up because both have literally hundreds of commentators that have done at least a few casts each, some have done hundreds.

As an outsider, beside Melee, shoutcasters are most of my watching experience. I wouldn't understand anything about the LCS, especially the pro plays but shoutcaster let me know when shit is about to go down and how outplayed a team was. Have to say that many shoutcasters do a really, really impressive job. Particularly with LoL, they do better work under tougher conditions than just about every sports commentator. That said, they do need to exercise some restraint, and excitement does not scale linearly with loudness. Also, personality alone isn't enough; it needs to be the right sort of personality.

Here's an interesting experience: I went to a live baseball game for the first time and was very confused when there wasn't the live casting I typically experience in esports games. I understand the rules of baseball enough to know what's going on, but I still expected to be there to be a commentator delving into in-depth baseball plays that lay people wouldn't necessarily catch (eg. roster lineups, left hand vs right handed batters, types of balls thrown and the order they're used, etc. etc.). Most of the game was basically just me waiting for the pitcher to pitch then looking at the scoreboard---it was honestly pretty boring. It was more interesting to pull up the televised version of the game since it had commentators. While E-sports draws inspiration from how actual sports are structured, I'm quite happy with the different path they've taken with regards to aspects like live-casting.
@panhradu
@panhradu 5 жыл бұрын
Really cant understand why its so boring for you. I think interesting part is the game, not some guy selling u fake emotions. Also understanding the rules is not enough. There is pretty big backround behind the games and without knowing this it can be boring for people who require more extensive content. But also there is logical reason why there are not casters. Players on the pitch would hear the potentional caster and that would make them confused. Also he could draw attention to certain aspects of the events that they are unable to perceive and thus help one side.
@SadFace201
@SadFace201 5 жыл бұрын
I think you have some misunderstanding on what shoutcasters are supposed to do---I think the game is the most interesting part as well and the shoutcasters are there to improve that. Of course, it depends on the shoutcaster since not every caster will feel like they're selling "fake emotions". I know understanding the game is not enough and extensive background knowledge is required (the same for esports), but the reason why you have shoutcasters is to make those details more known to people that don't have high-level game knowledge; if you play a video game for example, you may know the meta to some extend and have some understanding of some decisions that pro players make, but there are still instances where you wonder why they opted to do something you didn't expect---this is where the caster comes in and delineates. You state it yourself: "there is a pretty big background behind the [baseball] games and without knowing this it can be boring for people". How will someone like me who has no background in baseball be able to understand the game without a shoutcaster? I'm there for the same reason as you---I think the game is the most interesting part. And without understanding it, I see no point in seeing an actual live game. And finally, yes the players on pitch would hear it---that was the biggest question I was pondering. Clearly they have commentators on TV because the players won't hear it. I don't really think there's a way to getting around this for real sports. But that just means that if I really wanted to learn about high-level play in sports, it's better to watch it from a distance than to actually be at a live game.
