Walk along the streets of Singapore (or watch our videos) and you might come across colloquial Singaporean English - better known as Singlish.
What is it? How did it come about? And it's definitely more than ending your sentences with 'lah' (please, don't do that ✋)

Singlish is WONDERFUL. With Hokkien/Haka/Teo chew shoved aside for Mandarin, Singlish is a cultural repository of Singapore history. It is clever, it is succinct and it is cultural. Long live Singlish.

Malaysia English Manglish same like Singlish but we're not use "LEH" "HORH" too much. But now adays u come to KL it was SEBIJIK like Singapore. Where ppl do spoke English with the same slang as Singapore. Hahaha. "LA" "LEH" "HA" "HORH" "MEH" "MA" and there's alot.

Goondo (tamil) = fat Gendut (Indonesian) also means fat. Wow interesting i never know that! 😅

I have toured Singapore 6 years ago. Never heard anyone speaking singlish. I would hear either Chinese a lot, but other than that, just English. Also, flew with scoot airlines earlier this week. The flight attendants spoke just normal English to almost every passenger. Also, all the flight announcements were in English only. No Chinese or Malay even, and definitely not this singlish. I think singlish is one of those old languages that died out, like welsh in wales, Irish in Ireland, Scottish in Scotland, and Hawaiian in Hawaii. I live in Sydney, and this Mongolian waitress who knows me as a regular customer asked me “How are you doing, lah?”

Singlish is use to as a form of communication in the past and it has evolve into our national identity.

It is kinda necessary in the past as there are more less educated workers and the best way to communicate with them is to speak in way that they could understand. But I believe that it is not as necessary as the country continues to progress.

its part of our culture, its what makes us unique and its part of our identity. Its a result of our diverse society, its not whether or not its necessary for our progress. it still showcases our roots and its a reflection of our cultures, to erase it would be really sad indeed

@@kllie5674 Actually in the past, people do try their best to speak properly. Then later due to programmes like Under One Roof and Phua Chu Kang, people adopted the accents used by these programmes and evolved into the singlish style. I guess it would stick with us as you say, like our culture.

it depends, manglish wld have more malay influence, singlish more hokkien/chinese influence etc.

I am in Vietnam and no one mixes Vietnamese with English lol. I even toured Thailand six years ago, and no one ever mixed Thai with English. In Singapore, I would hear either Chinese or just normal English.

Hmm, should I introduce you, Jaksel Langauge? Spoken just in a significant part in Southern Jakarta and a little Central Jakarta. So apa ini? This is bahasa yang digunain people in Jaksel deh. Which is very common kok!

Singlish, when fluently used, is much more expressive than a Singaporean trying to speak proper English. It's not just the words. Tones from dialects and Malay are used to express certain feelings and meanings unique to these cultures. It is the true native language of Singapore. Please master and use this language properly and pass it to your children.

English itself is a German French Hybrid language. Singlish could be an official recognised language in Singapore in the future. With official grammar and schools teaching the language.

In a way this is sort of true. Outside the us, you can also say it is a hybrid of an Indian language along with German, French, and Spanish.

You are clueless about how Singlish originated. Singlish began with the past lowly educated and those who couldn't speak proper English e.g. those who were Chinese educated in the 1950s to 19980s; past lowly educated taxi drivers, hawkers, wet market sellers and NS men. Singlish is unprofessional in business meetings and on international platform.
