Great video! I may have missed it but I think it would be good to point out that the Stratum lucidum only appears in the thick skin (palms of hands and bottoms of feet) and not on the thin skin (everywhere else). It is to make our hands and feet tougher by providing an additional layer of protection. Imagine holding a really warm cup of coffee in your hands... it's kind of relaxing. But touch that same warm cup of coffee to your neck and we've got a whole different situation.

You are my favourite teacher on Khan Academy! Always so concise and easy to follow! I just spent 2 hours reviewing the integumentary system earlier for my test today and damn, it's amazing how great you've visually shown all that info into one concise video :) Looking forward to more vids from you!

So, do reptiles have a lucidum layer? or do they only have 4 layers? or does this not pertain to reptiles in the way I think it does... haha. I also thought this was very informative and a lot of fun! I did remember a song because of your intro, "Your epidermis is showing." I grew up very religious (am not anymore) but if you have ever listened to dc talk-colored people, it says all that in the beginning. I had not thought of that song in over 15 years. Anywho great slide, and now I will remember what is in the layers, Loved the zombie and coroners talk!

the difference between the lucid and the corneum layer is the number of stacked cells then? Or I missunderstood? Thanks a lot by the way

are only the cells in the stratum spinosum attached to each other by desmosomes or are the ones in other layers, like the stratum basale also bound by desmosomes?

The very top layer is keratinised stratified squamous layer. The cells become more cubodial as you go down.

You really need to explain the function of skin to all those people who constantly cut themselves for what seems like kicks if you ask me. I'm a paramedic. Apparently my opinion of the matter, my words about microbes being kept at bay by the barrier of skin that stops infections doesn't rate with them because the same people do this over and over and over. I must take these people to the hospital once a month. I'm really surprised they haven't actually gotten a terrible infection, but I really wouldn't play around with bacteria the way they do. I took Microbiology in Paramedic School. It was a most eye-opening experience.

I think snakes are disgusting. My friend has a snake and I see its skin lying in strange places. She actually SAVES it's moltings, which I think is too gnarly but oh well.

4:15 there are also desmosomes in the basal layer and also hemidesmosomes which attach the cells to the base membrane.

Also, the lucidum layer is clear because the keratinocytes are filled with a clear protein called eledein, not because it no longer has a nucleus or organelles. This layer is only found on the soles of the feet and palms of the hands. Its to prevent friction. Also, the nucleus and organelles do not give the skin its colour it is the melanocytes from the basale layer.
@Roseenmarie
@Roseenmarie 3 жыл бұрын
@Spicy meatballs correct, but he said that the cell was clear because it had no organelles or nucleus, this is not correct.
