Given that only 1 in 2,000,000 have the disease I'm fairly sure most research institutions are more focused on other, more prevalent, diseases. There's also the problem of incentive, I doubt any corporation would spend too much money on finding a cure if there's very little money to be made from it. -Someone may eventually find a cure but I'd have to guess there's probably only a handful of people that even care enough to try.

I have a similar disease called SCLERODERMA. Instead of bone, my body is producing to much collagen causing my muscle and skin to harden. I deal with some of the same issues as this. My connective tissue has thickened in my arms so I cant raise them. Think about putting on a long sleeve shirt that was 2 sizes to small or wearing a pair of high heels that are to small. I say heels because my calf muscles are so tight its pulling my heels up and i walk and stand on my toes. As for all the people commenting about how people like this should just end there lives, yes, it has crossed my mind but then there are the days I wake up and think my children and how I can help lobby for government funding for research or help someone who just got diagnosed. I have no cure but medications and positivity has brought me great results where I can be among the living and live a decent life.

Scleroderma Smarter gannjar well at least for you prosthetic limbs could be put on to have you not have to deal with it as much. Though idk about that, and it might just be worst in the long run or just more annoying, but hey! At least you would be able to move your arms I guess, so that's a plus no matter what!

@sclerodermasmarter2742 6 жыл бұрын
Richard Gibson prosthetics wouldn't work. I can barely carry a water bottle. And I'm not saying one is worse then the other because they both suck. Think about this, Scleroderma causes my muscles to thicken and harden, all my muscles. The heart,lungs,intestines,esophagus and even my tounge. My lungs have fibrosis therefore, My breathing is effected.

Jake G I dont know how I got it. I think I've had it but when I moved to SD i think something here caused it to erupt. Where are u?
@jakeg3126
@jakeg3126 6 жыл бұрын
I'm in PA. I went to SD about two years ago. It's nice, quiet and flat; also the buffalo are awesome. They tried a tendon lengthening and a bone shortening surgery (probably like 1cm) in my right arm/hand/wrist/fingers, because I have a bunch of contractures. and my wrist doesn't really move. They thought maybe a less bone would give tissue more room, but I cant say if it helped or made it any worse. My idea/theory is that you have to try to treat people by giving them some sort of cancer or disease that does opposite, I know people won't mind to be guinea pigs even though it may be considered unethical scientific purposes. I've been in the guinea pig, he has nothing to lose boat.

I read about a man named Robert Kinghorn, who at the time of the article, was the oldest living FOP sufferer in the UK. At the time of the article, which was published in 2005, Kinghorn hadn't sat down in over twenty-five years. When he was twenty-eight, doctors had told Robert he had to make a choice to sit or stand forever. It seems people with this disease overall find standing more comfortable than sitting. I read about a teenage girl with FOP, who also said that she would eventually have to choose between sitting or standing and when that time came, she would choose to stand. It astounds that these people can choose a position to stay in for the rest of their lives with such confidence and clarity. I can't imagine having to choose one position to be in for the rest of my life, because honestly, I have no idea. I imagine either position would drive me crazy after awhile.

This really, really downplayed how horrific this genetic disease is in later stages. For example, they often wind up having to be force fed by others as they can no longer open their mouths to eat or swallow as the muscles and ligaments have turned to bone. Likewise, they often suffocate as their diaphragm turns to bone as well making it impossible for them to breathe without mechanical assistance. Because one of the things about this disease? It doesn’t just cause your body to grow more bone. It causes it to replace just about any damaged tissue with more bone. Which is why you can’t just remove it via surgery. The very act of cutting a person open to remove the extra bone causes more bone growth. It also gradually contorts the bodies of those who have it as it becomes more and more difficult for them to move and locking their limbs in to place, leaving the older victims looking physically twisted.

Thing is, a lot of the sufferers of FOP would argue with you about the "bed bound" thing by age 20. I've seen many a number of videos documenting people who are in their forties or fifties with this condition by now, who are not "bed bound". Their lives are fairly restricted, but they still manage to have a life...go out with friends, swim (some of them), enjoy cooking, have hobbies, what have you. Yes, the disease will catch up to them, but it isn't the same disease that killed you by age 40 absolutely, anymore, exactly. There will always be those "worst cases", though.

In my Year 11 (England) Biology class, my teacher was talking about her son who was one of the very few people who suffer from this disease, this was a few years back and he was 12-15 then from what I remember so he must be between 16-19 by now. She would talk about how she would have to carry him in certain situations and it was awful to hear because it was someone’s mum talking about their child, not the typical scientist and a subject. I couldn’t imagine how they coped with it or what the kid was going through but from hearing how it effects someone first hand, it’s truly scary...

memes iz gud I know it happens to me to a lesser degree, but I always attributed it to my Schizotypal Personality Disorder and fear of bugs. People can have hallucinations through all five of the main senses I think.

Quiry mi stupid comment this shiw is about statistics, there are alot of statistics on video games especially gtav, cars blown up, people killed, money earned, what if gta v los Santos was a country? Which would be super interesting. Also seeing that gtav was the best selling game( another statistic) ever it would have a huge viewer base and be highly profitable
