I have just arrived in SVALBARD, Northern Norway. It's the northernmost inhabited place on earth, with more polar bears than residents. In the summer months, like right now, the sun brightens up the sky 24 hours a day, and in the wintertime, it's exactly the opposite.
I'm here a few days early before our Hurtigruten expedition sailing kicks off to Eastern Greenland and Iceland! Stay tuned for some fascinating stories about the people, culture, wildlife and nature from the Arctic over the coming 2 weeks!
Just curious, how many of you guys have actually heard of Svalbard before?

Wait till winter with the polar night where it's pitch black 24 hours a day for atleast a month. You don't see actual sun from November-February, and during that time there is also the pitch black darkness for like a month as I said
@guidodelpapa3875
@guidodelpapa3875 2 жыл бұрын
@@adara4635 It's actually pitch-black for 2 months and a half, from November 12th to January 28th :) The sun hides behind the mountain range at the beginning of October until it comes back on March 8th, so during most of October and February, there's some light at noon, but you do not see the sun itself. The very first days of February there's barely 1 or 2 hours of twilight, but it's enough to get a sense of joy and relief after almost 3 months of total darknesss :)

Svalbard has been in the News all week (July, 2019) here in USA, on NPR (National Public Radio). Estimates report that 200 reindeer were found dead- apparently from starvation. Some Polar Bear deaths, as well- they can't get to where the seals are. The melting & disappearing sea ice is destroying their ability to reach food sources.

You have to go back in February/March…watching this video it looks drastically different in the summer Having been to nearly 80 countries now, it’s quite possibly the most beautiful/unique place I’ve ever been (maybe some perspective bias as I’m from the humid swamplands of Florida)

1992 took ship from Tromso and returned after 2 weeks. I camped rough near the airport. You do get used to the 24 hours of daylight. Why fly, ships are much more interesting.
