Fully agree with Dr. Svoboda Sir that Patanjali did not try to fuel individualism in any way. The person who tried to relate yoga with tantra through individualism is actually not doing any yoga in the first place. Westerners need to get themselves rid of the naive notion that individualism is good and heroic, in fact, the essence of Tantra is to achieve Nirvana by slowly getting away from individualism and become unlimited. One does a huge disservice to himself/herself if power and possibilities of yoga, mantra and even tantra are employed to enhance individualism (strengthening Ahankara aka Ego).

In Vajrayana tantra is defined as the path of transformation. as opposed to sutra (renunciation) and Dzogchen (self-liberation). In the 9 vehicles of Nyingma school these three are classified in ascending order as: sutra-tantra-dzogchen. A useful, albeit slightly simplistic analogy is used to describe the main modus operandi of all three capacity levels: 1. Monk goes around the poisonous plant and carefully avoids any contact. 2. Tantrika uses the opportunity and creates medicine from the plant's poison. 3. Atiyogi/dzogchenpa does not avoid, nor seeks the poisonous plant. He is like a peacock who eats the seeds of poisounous plants straight, his digestion is internally prepared to absorb it all without harm or necessity to convert the poison into edible form. - these three levels of practice represent three levels of capacity to which these three types of skillful means and margas are designed for. Basically, all forms of Tantra should have one thing in common - transformation of 5 poisons into 5 nectars. Also, all tantras have generation and completion stages.

It is also worth pointing out that Tantra and Yoga don't have to be entirely separate paths. At least in its early form, Hatha Yoga was a distinctly Tantric form of Yoga, very different from what was presented by Patanjali. Also, some forms of Tantra make use of Yoga techniques, further illustrating the connection between the two systems.
