Really glad you guys enjoyed this. One thing I worry about is how it was marketed. Like how you guys thought "Us" was marketed, they also tried marketing this as a horror movie when REALLY it's a sci-fi movie with a few horror/thriller elements. That actually threw a few people I know off when they watched it.

the monkey thing isn't unanswered....it's a wild animal that Jupe thought he had a connection with. Jupe thought he tamed the money, but he didn't. The monkey avoided beating him to death because it couldn't see his eyes (obscured by the yellow tablecloth). Also, Jupe thinks that the standing shoe signified a miracle, even though it was just a random event. As a result of all of this, Jupe never truly learned the monkey's rules. It's a wild animal that attacked when it was scared, and it spared Jupe because he didn't look it directly in its eyes (it didn't see him as a threat at that moment). This is why the alien killed him....Jupe did not learn the alien's rules like Oj and his team did. He believed he could tame the alien and he died because of it. Basically, Oj's dad said that some beasts can't be tamed. People thought they tamed the monkey, but it brutally mauled humans....same with the alien.

For anyone actually wondering - the government changed the term from UFO (Unidentified Flying Object) to UAP (Unidentified Aerial Phenomena) because literally anything in the air that you don't know what it is is technically a "UFO" - a frisbee is a UFO if you don't realize that it's a UFO. UAP specifically refers to the phenomenon of an aerial craft/animal/object that cannot be identified by official means. UFO just means "something in the air that I don't recognize right now," and UAP means "we tried to figure out what this shit is and we can't."
@RabidDogma
@RabidDogma Жыл бұрын
And as for whatever the creature is - it could be extraterrestrial, OR it could be a "cryptid," an unidentified species of creature from here. (UAPs can also be, and usually ARE, earth-based. They're usually things that just weren't identified at first, and are later on.) I think that's why there was so much focus on animals in this movie. You can't always explain why/how an animal behaves, like with Gordy. That's the same situation with whatever this creature is. A big thing with a lot of animals is DO NOT MAKE EYE CONTACT. They see it as a challenge/threat. Once OJ (Kaluuya) realized that it was an animal and that it was behaving similarly to some animals, he changed his behaviors. You have to learn as you go.

@langitkensahaja125
@langitkensahaja125 Жыл бұрын
You almost got there. But why they changed it is to make it a broader term. Cause whatever unidentified thing in the air could not always be an object. It's more accurate that way. Could be a swarm of birds or just some weather phenomena or even something from the actual camera that's capturing it, UAP can fit both meanwhile UFO cannot.

The reason Jean Jacket puffed up into its “jellyfish” state is because it was displaying its dominance. Similar to how a cat will hiss and puff up its fur, or how a bear will stand on its hind legs to appear bigger. The wire Angel wrapped himself in hurt it, so it grew frustrated and began seeing the humans as a threat- so it attempted to intimidate them. Jean Jacket's behavior is a lot like real animals, which is the point. Many animals see eye contact as a sign of aggression and will quickly become hostile. Many animals also attempt to intimidate whatever they feel threatened by. The reason it didn't kill OJ I assume is because while he stared it down, he backed up slowly- showing Jean Jacket that he wasn't afraid of it but wasn't a threat to it either.

It's easy to criticize, but much harder to try to come up with a creative design. I think people believe aliens should look fathomable to the human mind. I feel people typically expect a humanoid and/or clear animal-like design, but something that is truly "alien" could very-well be unfathomable to our minds. (Kinda like cosmic horror, I guess.) Not saying Peele achieved this, but he definitely did a good job in my opinion. I don't think it's possible for us to create something visually unlike anything that we haven't already seen. That would be the God-level creativity.

Literal darkness, particularly when it became nighttime hours later when JJ was roaming through that rainstorm. When Jube and his audience were first abducted, it was around morning/during the day. When JJ sucked them all up into it's gaping maw and set everyone inside it's "stomach", you could see (what I believe to be) natural light shining through it's body's soft tissue & membrane. Eventually, it got dark, and those poor souls were still trapped inside that massive beast. Trapped inside that it's tight, claustrophobia-inducing digestive tract, with 0 light coming through, is a nightmare. Those people were certainly experiencing Hell as they were being abducted, but to suffer several hours in a compact space, tightly cramped together like sardines, while being slowly digested, IN THE DARK??? The monkey scene was tied directly to the themes of the movie as it was all about "the obsession with spectacle" and the idea of a "bad miracle". The shoe was the bad miracle as it was tied directly to a tragedy but it's presence ended up saving Jupes life. I love the bookends of this film. It begins and ends with a balloon popping. It begins and ends with a series of still photographs. I also have a fondness for movies that spoil themselves. It tells you exactly what's going to happen by showing you Gordy upfront, it shows you the thing's mouth, and even that quote. Other things I dig: The inflatable waving arm men look like they're people being pulled up when they're working. The alien/megafauna/Jean Jacket looks like a giant eye when it's sideways. In the trailer, Emerald does a spin right before she says the "skin in the game" line. In the movie she does the spin (again) after defeating Jean Jacket. (I wish they'd left the first one in the movie.) I like how the Jean Jacket story explains her relationship to the family and the business. That was probably not the only promise that got broken so it makes sense that she doesn't prioritize helping out. OJ *never* gets loud and does a lot of non-verbal communication because he's around the horses all the time. (Even when he yells for Emerald to leave and it echos he doesn't sound as loud as when Emerald tells him to run earlier in the movie.)

Jupe thought he had a special way with animals because of what happened with Gordy. Gordy killed or maimed everyone else, but just gave Jupe a fist bump, and the shoe standing up just added to the surrealness of the situation and made Jupe believe there was some spiritual connection there when there wasn't. The movie has a theme of control and respect. You can get horses to more or less do what you want so long as you respect their boundaries and keep them calm. The film crew at the beginning didn't respect the horse enough and ended up freaking it out. Jupe fed some horses to the monster in isolation but had absolutely no idea how it would react to a crowd of people all staring at it. He just assumed it would do what he wanted it to do because he was special, because Gordy didn't hurt him. Also, Gordy just snapped because the balloons popping on the studio lights startled it.

To help out with how the monkey scenes connects, it does relate to quote about the spectacle. the primary theme of the movie is how human society make spectacles out of everything for example the tragic accident with Gordy becoming immortalized in a SNL skit. later, we see how Jupe internalizes the incident and thus tries to do the same thing to the alien that was done to Gordy. Its why i love the only way to defeat the alien is to not look at it in the eye, thus to not partake in the spectacle itself. Also theres a lesson about animal nature. Jupe adds another great layer as being apart of the spectacle himself as a marginalized child star, SO MANY LAYERS with this one!!! Was 10/10 theater experience for me!

so i’ve watched this a number of times, and there’s a LOT to notice! one of my fav details is the relationship between the siblings. one is reactive and charismatic, the other subdued but disciplined. OJ was perfectly suited to train horses, but emeralds energy made the dad decide not to train her. since then she’s been fighting to prove herself and be successful in her terms, but the two are only successful with each other! she has dads charisma, and oj has dads discipline. i also think, as a pet theory, that OJ and emerald both display a lot of traits of autism and ADHD respectively. i know i’m painting in broad strokes and it’s not universally true, but kids with autism tend toward logic and rules, and adhd is connection and expression. the two represent extremes and balance each other out. i worked at a camp for kids with learning disabilities, and one of the things i loved watching is seeing the kids with autism and adhd learning to work with each other, because if you can handle an extreme, you can handle anything in between. i really love this movie and the story it tells. both of their flaws alienate them, but together they’re strengths. emerald is the only one that can bring OJ out of his shell, and OJ is the only one that makes emerald feel seen. their trust in each other was so well built! it’s a fairly straight forward movie but there are SOOO many details to notice!

There are a lot of symbolic meanings from just the standing shoe itself, there are many theories for it but my favorite one is that the shoe was quite literally the embodiment of the saying "waiting for the other shoe to drop" which means to wait for an expected and inevitable event to occur. Gordy went riot by his animal instinct because of the popping balloons, reminding us that no matter how cute looking or gentle a wild animal appears to be, it's still a wild animal. If you remember in the flashback scene another balloon (the last balloon in the room) popped when he start killing that other dude. And the moment Gordy starts sitting looking confused about what happened or what he just did, there was no other balloon that could trigger Gordy again and there was only one person left at the scene who still lives. We subconsciously expected what was gonna happen next, Jupe's going to die, but the thing is he didn't, or at least not yet so at that moment we were eager to find out what was gonna happen next, we were waiting for the other shoe to drop in the entire film just like Jupe did at that moment, to reveal us of what's gonna happen. And the shoe drops when Jean Jacket happened. We've always known that Jupe's gonna be the next victim, it was inevitable, it just didn't tell us by who or what. It's so simple and yet deep at the same time I love this film so much.

Two things about the monkey scene 1) It's suppose to represent how our own desire to consume spectacles or what we perceive as spectacles of the out of norm often leads to our undoing 2) The show stand up drew Yeun's younger characters attention away from the ape, the Ape like the Jean jacket space ship sheet thing saw these characters as a none threat once their attention was off both spectacles (Ape or Gordy and space ship)... Gordie and the space ship for humans are seen as spectacles in this movie, if you look away from them you're out of harms way because you're no longer seeing these threats as larger forms specificals

So in regards to the monkey thing, I believe it was meant to show that when the animals are around it, they freak out and don’t know how to react to it because they can’t see it similar to fight or flight, Jupe trying to fist bump him was him trying to calm down and relax the monkey with something that it is familiar with like a dog being hugged when it’s afraid of lightning so that he wasn’t freaking out like that anymore.

The alien Is designed in such a way that you can’t fully tell what it is because that way you can’t give it human qualities, or a face. We, psychologically, are always trying to find the “face” of everything so we can humanize it and understand it. Things we can’t find a face to make us uneasy, confused and uncomfortable. The design of the alien is pretty smart actually.

I feel like KiKi Palmer is the main character of the Film. She goes through a huge character development through the movie, from wanting to live out her dreams of being a Hollywood Star, to ending up fighting for her family's legacy. She ends up not only losing her own brother (her last family memeber, her own flesh and blood) to wanting the Oprah Shot, but she ends up "taming" (killing) Jean Jacket. You can imagine your own interpretation for what the ending showed, but I personally think OJ dies, which plays off on Emerald having to do the problem on her own, which she finally did with a huge life changing event. It's very symbolic of how she wanted to tame her horse, and she does so in the form of a giant animal in the sky. Also, if you look closely at the Jupe Balloon in JJ's mouth, you can see that the part thst popped was Jupe's finger, symbolic to how Gordy died from a gun shot to the head. God, I just love this movie so much. Definitely my favorite movie of 2022.

This movie is one of my favorites!! The acting is next level…it truly felt like real people instead of a bunch of actors. The humor was so good and actually funny. Especially Keekee she was so so good in this movie. Also as someone who is interested in UFO’s or rather UAP’s this movie was soooo on point. I love how the movie transformed into different SCI fi genres as the movie went on in the same way the creature transformed as the movie went on. Also I understand the whole monkey bit now that someone explained it to me…with it having to do with humans obsession with spectacle especially violent ones and ones including wild animals under the belief that we have control but really they are wild animals/predators. All of that stuff was fine but I could have done without it or at least less of that and had more attempts at trying to catch the UFO/being on camera. Starting off as a mystery, then horror, then creature feature like jaws, then action adventure. Also they had the the footage from the camera as well as the old fashion photo in the well.
