What is the Apelles palette?

ORIGIN:
This is a palette I learned from Odd Nerdrum. It is named after the legendary Ancient Greek painter Apelles who was court painter of Macedonia.
PALETTE:
The palette used by Apelles consisted of only four colors: white, black, yellow, and red.
WHY USE IT?
The great beauty of this palette is in its simplicity. It is meant to reflect nature which is why there aren’t any extremely vibrant colors such as ultramarine blue which could distract from the unity. It offers a simple path to harmony.

It is not true. It was Goethe who talked about this limited palette, but there is actually no historical mention of it. Besides, Goethe did not understand anything about art, he was a philosopher, and everything he said about colors is nonsense. For me it is impossible to believe that a world as refined as Ancient Greece was, they used only 4 colors that do not allow you to do anything.

Pliny the Elder's Natural History: Book 32 "It was with four colours only, that Apelles, Echion, Melanthius, and Nicomachus, those most illustrous painters, executed their immortal works; melinum for the white, Attic sil for the yellow, Pontic sinopis for the red, and atramentum for the black; and yet a single picture of theirs has sold before now for the treasures of whole cities." Book 34 "He also painted Alexander the Great holding a Thunderbolt, in the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, for a fee of twenty talents in gold. The fingers have the appearance of projecting from the surface and the thunderbolt seems to stand out from the picture - readers must remember that all these effects were produced by four colours". With practice a limited palette can be very refined and allow you to do a lot.
