I get asked this question a lot, but I’ve never had an answer until now. The best attribute in Football Manager is.. I mean c’mon the video will be more entertaining than reading that here! Hopefully, at least. Attributes are situationally dependent, but with a balanced FM league created by FM Editor’s Satan Junior, we isolated them completely. Football Manager answers, ever-elusive, have come to us.
Have any other ideas for Football Manager tests like this? Let me know in my DMs! I get basically all of my video ideas from you all. This one required a little FM creativity but we got there. Look forward to seeing you on stream Llaneros is starting to turn a corner. Football Manager on people, with a new view on attributes.
Sincerely,
FM Senpai

Alright addressing questions and such after the first few hours: 1) the coaches were completely balanced at 10, which means they might not have picked the best tactics 2) I know the sample size is small 3) yes this is a series where we will have larger samples sizes, position specific tests, hidden attributes and traits 4) I know only one person can take corners/free kicks etc, I just wanted to find the best carrying attribute out there. 5) I disagree that finishing is ‘obviously’ not going to do well, no matter who gets a chance to score during the game has 20 finishing, which means they should be BAGGING goals

Sounds great. One position I'm particularly curious about is FB. When I'm building a team, I usually have to make a choice as to whether I'm going to use smaller wingback types or larger CB/FB hybrid players with a greater jumping reach. Lately, I feel like smaller FBs create such a huge disadvantage on set pieces that I almost always choose either larger hybrid FBs in a four-at-the-back system or a three-at-the-back system with three tall CBs. The impressive results in this test for "jumping reach" have only reinforced my suspicions, but I'd really like to see what you would discover in a test specifically focused on FBs.

Maybe for a next version if it's happening It can be interesting to add an Allround FC, where all attributes are 11. That might require a higher current ability than a specialty FC, but it maybe could give some useful insights anyway. Do I sign the more well rounded option, or do I sign the less well rouded one that has a redeeming very high key attribute.

Next time you should have perfect coaches. I think that explains why some teams fluctuated so much. A bad coach with a wrong tactic can affect a lot. Like if the free kick or corners team wasn't playing for set pieces then they will obviously struggle to have much of an impact.

You could do a follow on to this experiment where you take the top 10 attributes and a put a team in the Premier League where every player in that team had a 20 for the top 10 and see how important/good they really are.

All the coaches had same preferred formations, I was more wondering if they still all had the same preferred formation but it was different, as in would dribbling do as well if you didn't use wingers or off the ball if you used 3 strikers, as someone said in editor discord there's so many variables that it'd be near impossible to make a video exploring all of them.

I would like to see how this would go in a league with a higher median, say 15, for attributes. My guess is we would see less of an importance on physical attributes dominating since speed kills in lower leagues. I think this might move the best attributes towards the mental side. Very interesting results, thanks for doing it!

This is Interesting and I'm glad I watched it, but it in not particularly conclusive. Some attributes matter more for different positions, while some are interdependent and rely on other abilities to be effective. I think technique, passing, vision, first touch, decisions, acceleration, pace, stamina, and strength are valuable for every position (although some roles need higher values in certain of them than they do in others) while some attributes are more useful for certain positions (finishing, flair, positioning, marking, etc). Also, some attributes are multiplied in effectiveness by having others at an above average level. An example of this is aggression which needs good tackling, strength, and bravery, or finishing which needs good composure, off the ball, decisions, and technique to really make a difference.

Cool experiment! What i love most about FM is how they use the attributes to create differences in player's style and mimic real life differences between players, you wouldn't even realise untill you really start thinking about it. I remember in FM18 De Bruyne was allready a great player but perhaps not knows as the best midfielder yet. So comparing to other great midfielders he wasn't faster, more creative or a better passer per se. But out of all the players who had similar stats to him, De Bruyne's decision making was just a bump above the rest, and the reason why a lot of his passes became assists and he generally didn't do much wrong on the pitch. Because my team couldn't ever dream of having De Bruyne but i wanted a similar player as my playmaker, so i player searched with his stats in the filter, with a focus on high decision making. The young gem that came out was Yari Verschaeren, wich i think everyone from FM will know by now. For teams just below the absolute top, he really played like a mini-De Bruyne and i was so happy about that.

Physicals might have been the best but between mental and technical attributes it seems like mental dominated them so that kinda explains why you can have some very smart and physical players with basically just a couple of technical attributes rated fairly and still be awesome in game. Also, aggression is more related to getting carded and bravery is the one related to injuries, it even says that about bravery in its description. Great vid!

Very interesting video. I honestly thought determination would be up there, but I was incorrect. Also, I'd love to see a follow up to this video, but we test each discipline (for lack of better word) as a WHOLE. I guess it would have to just be a 3-team league, and I think 20 games is a decent sample size. The way it works would be simple; Tech would play Mental in 5 home games and 5 away games, and they would would play Phys in 5 home games and 5 away games (apply the same fixture schedule to the other teams). It's up to you how many times you sim this league, but I feel like 5 times again is reasonable. The idea is pretty basic, the Tech team would have 20 for all Tech attributes but only 10 on all Mental and Phys. Apply the same idea to the other team, with the obvious exception that the Mental team gets 20 on all Mental (10 on others) and Phys gets 20 on all Phys (10 on others). I also feel that adding the total points earned (rather than the positional ranking used in this video) is a better way to determine which discipline is better overall. Finishing 1st instead of 2nd doesn't feel like it tells me much, but being told one team amassed 100 points compared to only 40 points tells me a lot more. Hopefully you like this idea enough that you're willing to make a video on it.

@Alex Pip Yes this. I thought determination would be top 10 for sure. I wont sign a player with less than 12 determination for any position, but I might sign a player with like 6 passing, jumping or pace, depending where they play (um, no nonsense cb, amc, ummm gk). (great streams Z, Go Dragons) I'm here to anecdotally say how good pace is. I've got a 22 year-old Scottish kid at San Marino. He started life as a left back, but converted to WM-attack (I love the WM role for the extra tackling crunch out wide, winning the ball back higher up, that wingers never have). He's no superstar but his pace is 18, and climbing. He's professional and consistent. He only has finishing of 4, but he gets in positions and beats defenders when other players don't. He scored 15 goals in the league. As a WM. With 4 finishing. *the tactic is a counterattacking strikerless 4-4-2-0

berbafan67 a team where everybody is good freekicks is pretty useless because you only actually need one or two player in an XI to take them. But such a team won’t win many free kicks in scoring range when they are going to be playing at lot of games against sides where everybody is better at them in one out of tacking, positioning, marking, strength, workrate etc. Exactly the same for corners. You won’t score from corners when everybody in your team is the same height as the opposition, but they are better than you at one out of the main defensive attributes. You won’t even win corners that often if you’re playing against a side where every player is better than you in one technical attribute that will allow them to dominate possession. It’s why those attributes came last. What makes you good at set plays isn’t just delivery; it’s being able to win a set piece to begin with, and then having some players with the necessary attributes to win headers.

Before the video starts I'm going to say Anticipation. Its the most needed attribute among all positions, GK included. All the best players on FM typically have very high anticipation. Side story I remember doing a AC rebuild a good few FM's ago when Donnarumma had like a -10 potential and I remember prime Donnarumma in my save having great GK stats with good positioning alongside good concentration and decisions but his Anticipation was like a 11 or a 12. Needless to say he was dog shite and I got fed up with him and sold him to Madrid I think😂😂😂. Lesson learned. I don't touch players with low anticipation now. 😂
@-_-DatDude
@-_-DatDude 4 жыл бұрын
Yikes not even a top 10 finish for my fav stat, Anticipation? I am genuinely shocked with this test, as all the clutch players I produced or bought over the years, all have really good anticipation. My thought process was; with everyone being at a 10 in most stats, anticipation would come out top, as its two things baked into one stat. Being reacting to scenarios and how good a player is at predicting what will happen in game. I still stand by my principles and refuse to buy low anticipation scrubs. I guess it's a case of stick with what you know. 😂😂😂
@Taeerom
@Taeerom 4 жыл бұрын
Anticipation can be compensated for. Having a striker 5 jumping reach more than your defenders, is going to dominate even if the defenders are smart. But it should be said, jumping is one of those stats that lets bad players overperform against other bad players, together with pace. This test is bad players against other bad players, and what is important there is different than when you compare good players. You can find good aerial players with mediocre jumping, like lewandowski, that are much better than someone with higher jumping, like Giroud. But if you compare a league two striker with 17 jumping to one with 13, then almost no matter what (if they are roughly the same quality), the one with 17 will perform a lot better. Anticipation also suffers from being reliant on other attributes to work properly. With anticipation, you also need positioning, agility, otb, and decisions to really shine. It is a good ability, but not alone. If a guy has good jumping and nothing else, he will still be very valuable comapred to his overall quality.

I thought determination would be somewhere at the top as it has the most impact on overall attribute development so all those 10's would improve much more and quicker than the other teams; resulting in better performances and more wins. interesting study there. obviously jumping + heading are "false positives" here because everyone had the same height. I believe that the mental side of the game is actually very important, though it is more dependant on the other sides of the game than the other sides of the game are (I hope you can still follow me haha). So a good player will always have good mental stats, in combination with either physical or technical stats (or both of course). A smart player with good technique will be able to pull off great things with the ball, and a smart player with good physical skills can be awesome without the ball. A player with good technical + physical but bad mental stats will mess up too many things.
@mcfadyenmaffoo

I think the reason why physical attributes dominated this test is because of the attributes being set to 10. This would typically be low end League 2, or high end Conference League, in which fast strikers and strong defenders typically do the best. If the attributes were set to 15 each, then perhaps more technical attributes would do better seeing as it's more representative of the top end of big leagues, in which it is more about literally being a better player, as opposed to being quicker, stronger and able to cover more ground. Just hypothesising, this might not be true but it would be interesting to try that out!

Passing makes sense to be at the top really because if you are unable to pass well then you are just going to keep giving the ball away to the other team. If you can pass the ball it means you can keep it more therefore have higher possession and with all the other attributes equal that is a big advantage.

Only issue left ( and probably the biggest issue) is that analysing attributes in isolation doesn't show you how they interact with each other. E.g. Vision alone isn't a great attribute because you need good passing and technique to pull of the passes. Which is probably why it finished low

I think it would be interesting if you did the same experiment but with all other attributes being 5 or 15 so we can see if it is a difference like some attribute being more important with worse or better players

It makes sense for passing to come top as the players can transition and retain 😮the ball, create chances and dont need to be as fit. I thought determination would be higher but it makes sense for it to be lower as physicals are low. The team would be exhausted after 20mins.

So based on this, what players would count as a 'The Perfect Player'? It'd be interesting to put a small team together that match this and see how well they do.

Zealand i remembered something really important on this test, Consistency only affects mentals and technicals, which would explain why physicals were so much better since everyone 10 consistency. Maybe de the exact same test with 20 consistency and compare results, maybe even test 5 consistency.

I think some of the stats need to be looked at with the context of how the simulation set up the teams (something not mentioned in the video). I'd love it if Zealand could do a follow up video to look into the systems used by the simulation for the top and bottom attributes to see if some of the placings could have been impacted by the preferred formation and systems used by the managers. Something like Workrate would have finished high if the team was playing a high intensity gegenpress tactic but would probably finish significantly lower if the simulation had them playing a slow steady passing game where the team drops back and regroups rather than press. You'd maybe expect things like "off the ball" and "finishing" to be lower if the team is only playing with a single striker (eg 4-5-1, but could be a lot higher if the simulation was playing 4-3-3 with three strikers.

Now that were in to FM21, will you run a similar test or try some of the other suggestions below - like which bad attribute makes your team worse? Maybe results will be nearly the same, but I find this grading quite useful and if there is an update to 21 it would be good to know. Thanks for all your great tips and work on the videos!

Makes a lot of sense. There is only one player that gets an advantage of things like corners and free kicks, while literally every player on the field uses things like passing, heading and pace.

Cool idea! I wonder if there's a way you could do it so instead of everyone being the same height and weight instead every team has the same average height and weight so there will be variations, some taller players and some smaller, all in random positions, wonder if that would affect the results at all?

It would be interesting to do a more complex designed experiment to capture interactions between attributes, which are probably more important than individual ones.

Very interesting findings, even if from small sample. Kudos for idea and conducting the test! Honestly I am surprised to observe that mental side is basically least important. Will definitely change the way I try to judge players, especially regens. When I take a look at veteran players, here Lazio is a good example, and see mental side almost all in green (Radu, Acerbi, Parolo, Sergej, Patric etc), I feel that it means a lot. Seems to mean way less. Am surprised as well to see determination alone being such unimportant attribute. When looking at regens this is first attribute I check and when lower than 5, I reject them outright, when lower than 10, I review them with scarce attention. Final note: at least in the game, football is just football with physical and technical attributes being more important. Especially physical side. Mental is what separates decent players from champions. So when we pick players for top flight squads, mentals are key, when physicals and technique are comparable.

It is because physical stats are the only ones not effected by form, consistency etc. Determination is basically how good a player is at getting the most out of his other stats and when they are all the same it's obviously nerfed as it relies on other stats to be fully effective, I think this is the same reason technique came so low which another very important stat. You have to bare in mind if all other stats were 15 instead of 10 there would be completely different results, it's also of course a very small sample size, ran 5 times a single outlier makes a huge difference.

I actually guessed passing as if you’ve got a good passing team, your not only keeping the ball your tiring out the other team , if you’ve hit good passers your improving your chances at opening up attacks and setting up shooting opportunities

Maybe ZeaIand should make a new test with teams with combo's of stats, like you said, one with finishing, composure and technique. Maybe one with Passing, Decision, Off The Ball(Barcelona). And maybe Pace, Acceleration and Off The Ball. Park the Buss team, with tackling, marking and positioning. Idk, but that would be cool! @ZeaIand

Vision being so inconsistent I think makes sense when you consider the 10 passing. What does it matter if you can spot a beautiful cross field pass to spring your forward into a clear cut chance, if you can't actually make the pass. When Vision FC got lucky in the passing RNG, they placed well, and when they were unlucky, the turnovers form missed passes was too much (also makes sense that they might try harder passes)

Like natural fitness does matter though...it's just a nuance not picked up in your sim. But having players who can play week in and week out(what natural fitness helps with) is valuable. It doesn't show up much in game, but it's still very useful. also I knew it would be passing !!!

Think this points towards the success is in having a great defence primarily? The physical attributes would more be something associated with the defensive players. This probably reflects in real life where you have a player like Van Dijk who has strength, is quick and also good in the area. His aerial prowess proves useful in defence and then on set pieces when you attack. You basically want a defence of Van Dijk's and then him up front with a bit of finishing, first touch and dribbling...then you have midfield with good passing. Would be interesting to see you create this and have a defence all with Van Dijks attributes, forwards with the same but technical attributes a bit of a boost and the midfield the same but with passing boosted. A team of super Van Dijk's and see how they do :)

It would be nice to see the same experiment with combinations of attributes, like acceleration and pace, determination and work rate, passing and vision, finishing and technique, first touch and composure, but it seems like the combinations can be numerous and deciding them would be troublesome. How about the team DNA attributes that most use like determination, decisions, work rate, composure, teamwork? and combinations like that?

I actually expected passing to come out top, not because I think it is necessarily the best attribute but because it is important for all types of players. A team like finishing won’t do well because it’s essentially wasted on the centre backs but everyone can make use of better passing

Me, as an argentinan ex football player, can say that dribbling is absolutely important in football. Just look at the best players in the history, they were the best dribblers too, like Messi, Maradona, Cruyff, Garrincha, Ronaldo (both brazilean and portuguese), Ronaldinho, Shevchenko, Prosinecki, Totti, Del Piero...etc

Interesting experiment and fun to look at. Not trying to dump on the video, but the problem is that so many attributes need to work in tandem with others and isolating them doesn't get the best out of those attributes. I get that's not really the purpose of this video, though. A player with 20 off the ball but poor anticipation will not be getting the best out of their movement, for instance. High passing, low vision/decisions is another more obvious example. There's just so many variables in the game, positions, tactics, roles, personalities, form, etc, it's so hard to make any kind of determination on what the 'best' attribute really is, even if you do more experiments with larger samples. Much like real football, FM is a very inexact science.

A couple thoughts: Corners are obviously not going to be particularly helpful in isolation. You need a tall bloke with good heading on the other end of the corner in order to realize its value. This is likely the case for a number of attributes, which does tend to undermine the idea that the best way to evaluate attributes in a team sport is to make the entire team a bunch of cookie-cutter characters. On Natural Fitness, my sense has been that this attribute primarily affects, not performance in a single season, but how long a player's career might last at the top level. So, again, it seems like this particular test would not be able to measure its value. Having said all that, I still appreciate the effort and find the results interesting, though hardly definitive.

The only problem with this, as opposed to the individual role attributes, is I think this is more of what attributes are good on the most number of roles rather than which attributes are actually good. Like heading is OK on almost every role, whereas for example acceleration is amazing on a few.
