The thing I learnt was to use root tabs from the beginning. I assumed it was something to add when the plants grew larger. I would be very interested in an in-depth 101 on injected CO2 for beginners. Personally I feel my tanks may need a bit but the prospect scares me to death, plus it’s quite an investment to find I might not need it.

Learned alot from this series thank you Bentley. I have 55g that's been up and running for five years now. I make DIY root tabs and I dose once a week with Easy Green all the plants grow like gangbusters lol

The difference between easy green and flourish is HUGE. Read the description for flourish and they say it is a micro/trace fertilizer it has almost no macros while easy green has both.

If you look at the guaranteed analysis of flourish, it does contain both macros and micros, just in much smaller amounts than something like Easy Green. The Flourish system is designed to be dosed much more closely to an EI method where you supplement with a LOT of different things on a very strict schedule. It is still technically an all-in-one and for more low-tech or beginner friendly tanks its plenty. Way too little for the plant density I personally like to keep. An example here is Easy green is almost 4 times as much nitrogen as Flourish, but Flourish is designed to dose with it's Nitrogen supplement in addition.

Bentley I love the videos. They are so informative and it’s helped me so much . I have a question regarding the fluval 3.0 light. I have a 10 gallon with eco complete substrate and just ordered Anubias, Cryptocoryne , and dwarf sag. My first question is how many hours should I keep the light on and two at what strength. The fluval light is so powerful lol. Thanks

I'm guessing you're using the fluval nano (square shaped version) if so, I would look at 35% on whites, 25% pink, 3% blue. Use the automatic mode with one hour sunrise, one hour sunset and 4 hours of daylight at first. As the tank settles in, and the crypts propagate, you can increase the daylight longer

Bentley Pascoe Thanks a lot! I’m actually using the fluval spectrum plant. 3.0 they make a 15-24 version. Does this Change anything or still the same settings. The tank has been cycled for years just decided to switch substrate and get into planting largely due to your influence and ability to simplify things. I have two more questions if you don’t mind. When the Anubias does propagate and I should increase the lighting what would you recommend I increase it to. Second the dwarf Sagittaria came in really tall will it still propagate and create a carpet effect or does it need to be trimmed smaller

Thanks for doing this series. One thing I still struggle to understand is the fish/plant balance. I like to keep planted tanks well stocked with fish, and their food and waste help fertilize, but what exactly are the fish and food providing (besides nitrogen), vs. what should be supplemented? Does the fish waste and food in a heavily stocked tank provide a decent amount of phosphate as well? What about micros, iron, potassium, etc? Maybe it's a super easy question, or one that warrants more reading or a new video?

Sorry for all the questions I’m just new to plants and want to get it right. As I stated earlier I have the Fluval spectrum 3.0 light on my 10 gallon tank. My hood has two black lines going through it for the hinges so I was just wondering if I place the light closer to the back instead of the middle if the plants in the front of the tank would be getting enough light.

Idk I use thrive and osmocote and I have good results but thrive plus has more nitrogen then easy green

I like using advance in conjunction with an all-in-one liquid fertilizer for both low tech and high tech tanks. Sometimes is just the little boost a tank needs to overcome some issues.

I might end up getting another tank to put the clippings in just to save the baby snails. I am not pleased that planted tanks are such a pain in my backside

Great info as always! I had tanks for years growing up, but haven’t had one for 30 years. In a couple years, when our daughter moves out, I’ll be setting up a 75, that will be aquascaped, have Co2, high light, and have been doing research for everything that will hopefully make me successful. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge!

Stems will want water column available ferts, but it can work.

Dude ok. Here's a question. Can I put bunny poops in the substrate as fertilizer. Take me seriously I have enough tanks (with no livestock) that I should try it?????? Bunny poops. Dunk em under the sand into the soil. ????

I would not as the waste from a bunny will have a really high amount of ammonia.

In extremely low demand plant set ups, say a couple java ferns in a tank you could in theory do well on just fish waste, but I would never expect a lush, heavily planted tank to do well without supplemental fertilization, especially not fast growing plants.
