Dont know what channel is best to use on GMRS? I explain it, scientifically, with the calculations to back it up. I also clear up the Ginger VS Mary Ann debate.

Not sure if promoting the use of Channel 16 as a GMRS chatter channel is a particulary great idea. In Marine radio it is the worldwide distress channel: Yes GMRS is a different service, but this smells like a bad habit to adopt when there are other options.
@TheNotaRubicon

I guess if when you are on your boat and using a marine radio you get confused and think you are off-road, using a GMRS radio, this could be a problem. I know that happens to me all the time because of how similar being on a boat is to being in a 4WD vehicle..
@buzz25

Marine channel 16 is also the calling/hailing channel. So I don’t see much difference there. You make a contact on 16 and then you take you conversation to another channel.
@jamesh1707

@@buzz25 The difference is that 16 is actively monitored by the US Coast Guard and it is an offence to misue the channel.

Love your dry wit and sarcasm. Been watching all your radio vids and I hope you keep getting questions so you get keep doing more of them. Your channel has inspired me to learn more about gmrs, obtain my gmrs license, and I have an 805G on order. Will be looking into a mobile gmrs unit for my wife's Forester (already have a ham rig set up in my vehicle) and, hopefully, getting the fam to try it out. And yes, I'm a ham but do slam away as most hams deserve it. There are several gmrs repeaters in my area and I have received permission to use all of them. I must say, however, that I hear almost zero activity on them. Seems gmrs is more "purposed" to "deliberate" conversation between known parties. My perception is that nobody uses it just to say hi to others and get to know other hobbiests. Maybe you can do a video on that aspect and I can get a few more yuks from your channel?

Marine band 16 is a vhf calling channel. Boaters with marine vhf radios are required to monitor ch 16. I think 16 makes perfect sense as the go to channel for gmrs. Boaters, who favor many other outdoor activities like 4x4, might naturally choose gmrs 16 as a contact channel or emergency channel.... however, in the boating world once a contact is made, unless the discourse is brief, the users are encouraged to move to another channel to continue their chat. That's good information in 15 paragraphs or less... did I win a gmrs radio, or perhaps the pin of shame.

Channels 8-14 are reserved by the rules for handheld radios, thus mobile and base radios do not transmit on these channels. Narrowband FM may be received on an FM receiver, albeit at a lower volume. FM may sound overmodulated on a NBFM receiver. Note that GMRS power is limited to 50W TPO (Transmitter Power Output) on 15-22 and the repeater inputs, 5W ERP (Effective Radiated Power) on 1-7 and 0.5W ERP on 8-14. So in theory you should include feedline loss and antenna gain in calculating power on 1-14. Ham rules are just as confusing with a 1500W PEP TPO limits on most bands but 100W PEP ERP on 60 meters. In practice most hams use a 100W transceiver on 60 and GMRS uses 5 watt radios on 1-7 and assume insignificant antenna gain.

With regard to Hams writing comments on your channel. I think it us a complement that they are listening to you. You are obviously imparting information of value to them or they would not be listening. Just wanted to try to reframe things in a different perspective. And 73s to you because I am a also ham.

There are millions of GMRS users that use new old stock surplus radios that are certified for Part 90. Maiinly GMRS repeaters are FCC part 90 accepted, but I have not heard the FCC cracking down for equipment other baofens not beening FCC Part 95E accepted. I use to use a Motorola MAXTRAC and HT 1000 for GMRS. Now I use Connect Systems CS 800D MOBILE and CS 700 Handheld, which are FCC Part 90 accepted. I don't care as long as I am considerate and courtious

For those who think "ham" is an acronym and should be spelled "HAM," the best radio and channel is Channel 1 on a blister pack FRS/GMRS (which actually ARE acronyms btw) radio. It's indisputable; science doesn't lie.

I find those dweebs who spell ham "HAM" as annoying as the ones who end every transmission with (a usually effeminate sounding) "over".
