Thanks for the link and the UV9G PRO mention guys! If I may do a little plug here, the Happy Hams will be happy to know that there's a new version of the UV9P... the UV9PX, coming out very soon also. It has some new features that the UV9-Series has been lacking for years, and bring the line up to parity with the new UV9GX. Hit me up Josh. ;) Cheers!

@@theapplecalypse per the FCC, all amateur radios have to have TX locked to the ham bands. The radio can be unlocked for MARS/CAP or exempt GOV use, etc. Email me if you want some educational info on the subject.

Good ol Randy from notarubicon blocked me on his channel because I pointed out he criticized a brand severely until that brand became his sponsor and all of a sudden he gives glowing reviews. He is very thin skinned, his ego is easily bruised, lol. I wanted to get pinned to the top of his comments but he didn’t find me amusing and blocked me. In emergency conditions we can get news from hundreds of miles away before danger gets to us its good to be prepared , when internet and cell service is down 40 miles helps but 500 miles is better. Look if you go back and get your GED you will then have the ability to maybe pass the test I hear lots of excuses but stay in the little circle and play on your CB radio too its fun for low IQ people that cannot pass the test its ok we can't have all smart people in the world we need people like you that can dig ditches and pickup trash and sleep under overpasses its ok Mike I hear you man.

@@HamRadioCrashCourse I'm not sure really as I have both my GMRS and HAM ticket and enjoy the friendly conversation on both services. There's a public GMRS repeater a stones throw away from me but aside from a kid getting ahold of a radio and transmitting random noises once, it is pretty dead.

@@HamRadioCrashCourse A lot of us just have them as a "Just in case" kind of thing. So much of our communications infrastructure is based through the internet and public cell networks that can be disrupted or purposely shut off quite easily. When we refer to SHTF plans and events, that's exactly what we mean. Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. Much like how it's better to be a warrior in a garden than a gardener in a war.

I have both a ham and GMRS License. I use my ham for hitting repeaters when out hiking for emergencies and for being a Cert operator for our county. I (and my wife) use my GMRS License to use between myself and her between work and home (2 miles) for emergency or when cell the signal goes down. Different but each has their use 🙂

There are different solutions for different people. I am a ham and participate in 2m & 70cm bands. I have no current interest in GMRS, but would like to have the capability to monitor our local GMRS repeater. So I just jailbroke my Baofeng UV-5r, which allows me to do all these things with one radio, and not piss anybody off who isn’t already incurably that.

@notarubicon use MURS radio for VHF, license free, not busy, you get 5 channels with many more fars than GMRS (generally speaking), just a suggestion >do what you want

Digital modes are great for what they are, but I see them more as being nice additional options to have fun tinkering around or using for specific operational needs, not the meat and potatoes of amateur radio operations, which I view as being local FM, DX SSB, and CW.

Cullam McCormick from the UK has said it very well. Sad hams are all around and most are good. I've run into "sad Hams" and they are very far and few between. I live here in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and it's really the truth. The majority are very good, polite and easy to get along with.

But then you start posting KZfaq videos and you get to hear from a lot of them. Remember, you're personal experiences will vary greatly based on how wide your reach is. I generally agree with you though. People are passionate about technical subjects and while we all aim to be accurate, none of can claim we're always accurate. Unfortunately, people take this to extremes in the comments and these types of arguments start.

THANK YOU from a "Happy Ham" (WW4BJ) and from a recovering CB'er (KPK5907.......yes, I was such a nerd a got a license back in the 70's when it was still "required" because I had no life) your GRMS videos educated me and, more importantly, entertained me. I survived the FCC website, paid my fee, got a license (WRXA492) and bought 4 radios. When I get around to buying a GOOD radio, I will use your affiliate link. Thanks again! - Tropical Tom Garcia

On the issue of being a complete Ham geek and just using something like GMRS for practical purposes, or to just be able to do other hobbies, I'm pretty much in between you guys. I have a General license and a GMRS license. Most of my main concerns or intended use is for mostly local communications. However, I have an HF radio and have made contacts all over the country. I make some of my antennas and do electronic projects. So a little bit geeky, but as mentioned, I'm interested more in being able to have practical or emergency communications. Which could include HF, of course. But I'm sure the real geeky Hams are also interested in that.

practical emergency communications is gonna be some shit people can get from walmart and that's not ham radios, its frs
@andyalexander8064
@andyalexander8064 2 жыл бұрын
@@cwilliams6884 I didn't go into that much detail with my comment. I'm setting up communications with two groups of people. One is a group that will be using GMRS, because they don't want to get a ham license. Another is a group of hams and we practice doing simplex commo around our area. So not all of us are going to just be using frs. The thing about being prepared for emergencies, is getting prepared for emergencies. At least for some of us.

@@andyalexander8064 Agree with the soundness of your plan. Many people don’t understand the weakness or limitations of their own preps until they are actually needed during an emergency. You are much more likely to succeed as you have multiple methods at your disposal. Blessings to you and yours.
