What GPS Navigation system is the best for off-roading, overlanding? Spoiler: There is NO "best GPS for offroad" - it boils down to what features and functions are important to you, and that might not be the same as what GPS features are important to me, so in this video I show you what GPS and navigation systems I use when I go off-roading.

Gaia has been really good. Not perfect, but works with Apple Carplay, and it's easy to download offline maps in advance. There are a ton of map layers as well. Thanks for sharing. I'll look into OnX

I'm pretty impressed with GaiaGPS. It's easy to create routes and waypoints at home and is easy to download to your phone or iPad. You can easily record the trail (and enter waypoints) while off road and it will upload the file as soon as you have data reception. But what really impressed me was the selection of maps available, even historical maps can be downloaded. It's yearly subscription is less than a tank of gas, so it is far from a financial burden.

Finally!!! I've been on the fence about the Magellan trx 7 for a few years. I couldn't talk to anybody that had used it. You described exactly what I wanted to know. I don't care about the online stuff. Cuz I don't use computers I just don't like them. I've got a phone and that's all I need. I just wanted something preloaded and easy to use. Without an on going cost. Magellan owes you a commission. Cuz I will buy one now. The one with out the camera. Thanks so much.

I've been using a Samsung tablet with BackCountry Navigator installed on it for a couple years. Great app with lots of flexibility. Highlight is being able to export overlays back and forth with Google Earth. Allows me to modify overlays and add different points of interest.

I use two with the Android system: One is Tom Tom for street and state by state navigation annual fee (reasonable) all maps upgrades are included in that fee, same software loads on my phone and tablet. 2: For off road I use and like GPX Viewer Pro, a program that is constantly being upgraded and a one time purchase gives lifetime maps and upgrades (both on line and offline) This one I have used in seven states and have not found any trails not on the map, but it does not show ownership or if legal or not. works great in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, Montanna, South Dakota and Arizona so far. You can now record your own trails add way points in real time save the track and export it to other devices 3: For the Tom Tom the Google store has the app and the annual fee and you can use one subscription on multiple devices and it found places to eat, gas lodging etc. in all of the above states while traveling using offline maps. It used to be you had to use their device but no more and that is why I went back to them! Just some alternatives.

I’ve contacted the ON-X people as well about landscape mode. I use an 11” iPad for navigation and because of my (robust) Mount, it ain’t pivoting to portrait. I’ve been asking them to consider this for a year and it appears they have zero interest. That’s just bad design. I also use Gaia on the iPad and iPhone since Gaia works with CarPlay too. Thanks again for the vids and sorry this a late comment. Oh, here’s the general reason some apps work with CarPlay: it needs to be a turn by turn app that uses the controls apple provides. Reason? They don’t wan5 you fiddling with multiple ways of doing things when driving. And since On-x does have turn by turn, no CarPlay.

Gaia also has an overlay that shows public and private land. On Android (as I am) the overlay is free but I think it cost extra if on an Apple product.

I’ve been a Gaia member for a year now, and still haven’t quite figured it out. I just need to download a map of the area I live in, and start driving around, while following my progress on my phone. Then I think I’d figure it out. The thing I really don’t know how to do, is running it through my iPad. I don’t know anyone else that’s into overlanding, so I’m kind of on my own. Being technology challenged doesn’t help either. 😂

I rode to South America and all the overlanders used Maps.me . Since that trip, I started using it on offroad trips and its been great. Its open source so all the trails are there and its free! You download the maps on wifi and its easy to share waypoints. If you have a spare tablet, its a great cheap option. It had all the back road routes in death valley and mojave trail for example. Maybe not as good as many other options, but its free

I use Gaia on my iPhone since it can be displayed on CarPlay. I download trails in gpx format and upload it into my Gaia account or build my route on my iPhone, iPad or Mac and it just syncs to my account. Most of the planning takes place on my Mac with a large 32-in display. CarPlay is so much easier to use for with a large screen rather than directly on the phone's screen. I'd like to try OnX but with no CarPlay, it's not likely to be a long term solution for me.

Over the years I tried al kinds of gps devices including legendary garmin 376c. Now I use my ipad 12.9 with gaia gps software. The ipad is rock solid mounted to the dash of my truck with four strong €5 magnets. The gaia gps has superior functionality and gives access to the best maps available. The ipad is also connected to my Garmin Inreach device for emergency situations. For me this setup is optimal. The ipad gives almost Tesla comfort in my 2002 truck!

The interface and computer transferability on the real GPS units as you mentioned is awful. GPS technology is about a half century behind cell phone technology. It's not a mystery that phone apps are light years ahead of clunky old GPS company products. I thought the TRX was going to be the beginning of a new era for GPS technology with its touch screen but it is not. They're lipstick on a pig in terms of computing technology and user friendliness. THey're great for knowing where you are and figuring how to get back home,,, and sometimes they're OK for figuring out how to get to the next destination, but mostly they're just a pain and not worth the frustration and expense. Some day I hope one of those companies will team up with microsoft or, god forbid, apphole, and figure out how real interfaces and programs work.

You said you didn't like the cost of Google Maps. I'm not aware of any cost of Google Maps (other than just being tracked by Google?). It works on iPhone and Carplay as well. It also lets you download an area so even if the street to the trail is out of cell phone, you have maps. I've even found it has a lot of our forest service roads, though I don't rely on it for that and switch to Gaia once I'm at the trails.
