What is the best kitchen cabinet paint?
What a great question. No one wants to go to the effort to paint their kitchen cabinets to only have the paint scratch off after a few years.
Klappenberger & Son founder David Klappenberger has taken the time to see which primer works the best and what cabinet paint will hold up best to oils that rest on the cabinets.
Every time we touched the cabinets, we transfer a little bit of the oils from our harmless fingertips to the painted surface of the kitchen cabinets; as time goes by, the oil seeps through the paint and can break the bond between the topcoat and the primer or the primer and the factory finish. Either way, the paint comes off.
About a dozen different cabinet paints, and I picked 7 of the most popular paints for painting kitchen cabinets.
They are as follows:
• C2 cabinet grade paint with no additives
• C2 with paint conditioner
• C2 with a hardener added.
• Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Gloss
• PPG BreakThrough Satin Finish
• PPG UltraLast Satin Finish
• Ben Moore Command Satin
• Ben Moore Advance Satin
• Ben Moore Aura Satin
I painted one side of the cabinet door with oil primer and the other side with shellac primer to see if that made a difference.
After applying two finish coats, I allowed the paint to cure for 28 days.
Crisco shortening was then wiped on both sides. After about ten days, the Emerald Urethane Gloss paint began to scratch off. The other paints did not.
On the 8th week, PPG BreakThrough could be scratched off on the side with oil primer. On the Shellac side, it did not.
None of the other paints ever “scratched off the kitchen cabinet door. However, I was able to pick the paint off with deliberate effort.
It was interesting to find that the oil primer side of the door was more likely to have the paint picked off than the shellac side.
In determining which paint was ultimately the most durable, will take a bit more time. However, this is what we do know so far.
The C2 hardener makes a difference, and to date, there is no chipping or picking of the paint.
Ben Moore Command and Advance have held up perfectly on both sides.
PPG UltraLast has also been terrific so far.
In conclusion, four paints are still in the running for first place, and Emerald Urethane is the weakest of the bunch.
