It's $165. (I think they missed the opportunity to make it $164, just saying.) If you can't afford that then you can't afford to be in retro gaming. A console and a handful of games costs more.

The prices he quoted in the video are typically for complete systems with the mod already installed and listed on eBay where prices are already high. If you have your own system you can have it all done for less than $250 if you find someone local to do the install. I'd do the work for $65. It's not very expensive. See my previous comment about "if you can't afford that."

@@Darxide23 I saw your comment and chose to ignore it. A lot of people like retro gaming, but don't have a ton of cash at their disposal, so they dip their finger in when they can. There is no reason to be dismissive of a huge population of people just because they cannot afford it.

For the average person with no electric/soldering skills, an Ultra HDMI upgrade will cost well over $300. True, it doesn't seem like the EON plug looks any better than S cable upscaled, but for the simplicity of going straight to HDMI, I don't think the price is unreasonable.

I have one and its great.

You really do a great job in this video! Really clear to understand, side by side comparison and full screen comparison, and giving a good advice at the end. I Think I will go for the RetroTink for it's versatility (can be used on different consoles), PAL compatibility, easy to install, and it's price (remember that you can use it on multiple consoles!). The EON Super 64 is also an interesting option, but it's current version doesn't support PAL. The UltraHDMI is of course also interesting, but is a lot more expensive, requires some soldering skills and you have to mod your N64 to make it work.

Watching RGT85's comparo for the EON, he added the MCable into the mix, which when coupled with the EON, had astounding results almost at the level of UltraHDMI. The hyperkin darkness is just a matter of balancing the color, brightness on your TV you can see clearly that there's too much red on it when compared to the other solutions. If you remove some of the red and maybe add a little yellow I'm pretty sure it will make a huge difference and become more like the other ones.

You could definately improve it, but units that take advantage of the S-video signal will always have more potential brightness (and dark detail) than ones that upscale from composite. S-vid has a fourth "luma" channel that transmits brighness data in addition to the cyan-yellow-magenta channels. It's really the only advantage of S-vid over composite, but the extra brightness range is noticable.

AttunedFlux: True, due to the 3 color channels being better separated, fair point. I'll always use s-vid over composite if it's available. "~Technically~" i belive it might also be possible to push a marginal sharper signal than 480 through s-video, though i think it's unlikely that any source media or video components that utilised the extra bandwidth would ever have existed..

Yeah not really worth the cost by the time you consider you have to solder it in at $165 when other plug and play options are readily available, I'm experienced in micro soldering but there is always a chance of fucking it up particularly the ribbon cable. You could pay an installer but then you're taking a risk with them and you're doubling the price just to get the best possible picture out of a game system nearing 30 years old, doesn't make any sense especially now since N64 clones are starting to be made. The difference between S-Video with the RetroTiNK 2x and the Ultra HDMI is tiny when you consider price and that the RetroTiNK can also be used with other systems.

I think Eon and Retrotink could be the optimal solution. UltraHDMI appears to have some problems, such as the lines from interlacing (I think that's what it's called), and just appearing overly sharp for some parts of games (not for all parts/games, because for some parts/games it looks very nice). I don't think the games were originally intended to be displayed that sharp, due to being optimized for SD CRT display, and LED HDTV simply not existing during that time.

I find these comparisons a little misleading personally. You mentioned that when the RetroTINK was tested it was with S-Video, whereas the UltraHDMI is a solution closer to an internal RGB mod quality wise - It looks better not because it's the TINK's fault exactly but because all it has to work with is a stock S-Video signal. Because of this I would have liked to see the comaprison of an RGB modded N64 with HD Retrovision's Component Cables going into the TINK as well.

For those who still have their childhood consoles or bought one recently, this is a great option as it significantly reduces jaggies, cleans up artifacts a fair bit and it's just nice to be able to plug your console into current gen TVs. A bit of an investment but you're going to have to invest in something to keep playing the classics one way or another. Great video MJR \m/ ~Shade

EON 64 is functionally a Retrotink 2x with the chip identification numbers sanded off and covered in epoxy and locked to only N64. It's compatible with the SNES, but you have to cut out the back of the SNES to make it fit. Retrotink 2x is a better value because it's more versatile while also being cheaper. As for the Ultra HDMI, price and availability are basically the only weaknesses.

What keeps you from just turning the brightness up on your TV with the Hyerkin? Heck, you could, if you wanted to even slightly adjust the colors. For the money, and the ease of use, it seems like a great solution for someone who just wants to play some old games. Unless there is lag - which I assume isn't an issue since it wasn't mentioned.
@ians_parks
@ians_parks 5 жыл бұрын
*Ultrahdmi* - 1 frame of lag because of the digital conversion *Retrotink2x* - zero lag because it linedoubles svideo to 480p *Eon* -zero lag for the same reason as the retrotink2x *Hyperkin* - some input lag because its upscaling to 720p.

It is pricey, but you can then buy just an RGB mod for like $30, or $70 installed (just have to ship them your N64). Then you need to get either an RGB Scart or HD Retrovision Component cable fed into the RetroTink or OSSC. All that probably winds up being more than the Ultra HDMI... but you can use the set up for all your retro systems at that point.

The Hyperkin cable seems okay as a backup solution for one of the others, say if your capture equipment wasn’t compatible or you were taking the system to someone else’s setup. If they can tweak the brightness to be more accurate and maybe the colors, they’d have a really good bang-for-buck product.

Thank you Metal Jesus for doing this video. It’s actually super super useful. The side by side comparisons, editing, and your final thoughts put everything into perspective. I actually own all of the items shown in this video except for the ultra HDMI mod, so your video helps me decide which to use to which to give to my friends/family. The RetroTink2 works perfectly for my RGB modded N64 w/ Retrovision Component cable (plus SNES). Also works with Sega Saturn w/ Retrovision Component. Looks great. The downside: cables plugged into the retrotink then more cables coming out of that. Cables on cables is a mess. The EON will replace the RetroTink2 when playing N64 since it doesn’t require any extra cables or power. The Hyperkin will either be a portable solution or given to friends/family. UltraHDMI..... someday I guess!

Had a CRT at my old house and had my NES,SNES, and Sega Genesis hooked up to it. I had to figure out a way to hook up e everything to an LED TV in my bedroom so for now, went the cheap route with the Hyperkin cables for SNES and Sega, probably will plunk down the $99 for the RetroTink for the NES.

The retrotink2x looks exactly the same (not making assumptions) and works on mulitple systems. Thats why it is worth $99. The eon adapter however only works with the n64 or atleast was only ever designed to and yet it retails for $150. Removing the external power requiremnt doesnt warrant charging double what the adapter is clearly worth. They are price gouging consumers purely off the convenience factor. Dont get scammed and wait for more competition or for the price to come down to something actually reasonable.

@@ians_parks This is untrue. Just look at the comparison on this video of him playing a couple of these and you can see the Retrotink's image has an almost yellow filter on it by comparison to the Eon and UltraHDMI. Look at the sky especially at 6:55. It depends on the game of course, and doesn't exactly justify $50 to people with no money, but there IS a visual difference in how the Retrotink handles the N64 library. It does a worse job overall compared to the Eon. They are clearly not interchangeable in quality.

RetroTink is the clear winner. Sure, the Ultra HDMI is the best looking for the N64 but also difficult to get a hold of and not many people will want to shell out the money it takes to get it and have someone do the mod for them. The Eon and RetroTink picture quality look almost identical that it would be foolish to spend the extra $50 on the EON. Plus being solely sold for the N64, makes the RetroTink an even better value being as you can connect multiple consoles to it, upscaling ALL your retro systems, not just one. As for the Hyperkin cable, it's simply too dark. If they could fix that, it would be a strong contender at it's price.
