You don't need to buy lots of Rums, but knowing which is the Best Rum for your favourite Rum Cocktail is really important!

I've seen so many attempts to create a list of all relevant rum categories. I understand that categorizing rum is rather difficult because there are so many rums out there and they all try to break the rules and create a new category of their own. This video has by far best list of categories and is proabably the best guide I've come across to use for somone like me who's trying to improve their home rum bar. This includes English, Spanish and German websites and videos. Thank you for this great video!

Great video and getting to the stage I was pretty much preempting the choices of rums in cocktails but still ‘wray ’ off!! My go to for the Pina Colada has always been your initial choice in your back catalogue, RegLeg pineapple rum and the Havana 3 which I’ve found spot on and missus loves them and always gone down well at parties 😋both supermarket rums which is a bonus for anyone wanting to give it a go however now the collection is building I’ll be sure to give the likes of Stiggins & Hampden a go this summer 👌

Ooh I like giving my recipe. 1oz Appleton 8 year old. 1oz el dorado 3 year old. 1.5oz homemade cream of coconut. 1.5oz pure pineapple juice. Juice of 1 small lime. Shaken with Lewis bag Ice and open poured in a hurricane glass. Topped with more ice I just got the stiggins fancy though and run out of el dorado so next one will be with that. May like it even more

I agree it’s so hard to tell people what’s the best rum for them! You can only go with recommendations you like. But that’s your palate! Makes the head hurt! I have the Montanya, and I prefer the Flor De in a daiquiri over Montanya! So much to cover! Great effort! Thanks for the topic! Oh wait! Piña for me..def Stiggins.

Stiggins PCs have to be the rule! So so good! Although, I reckon Stiggins + the Plantation Coconut MAY become the new thing, if the Cut & Dry becomes a thing!!

For Piña Coladas., I have been favoring Plantation 3 Stars. I can't access Cuban rum in Chicago because of the idiotic boycotts. The last time I had Flor de Caña 4, all I could taste was ethanol so... no thanks. This has been a real crowd pleaser... but Piña Coladas and tropical cocktails aren't common fair around here. Margaritas are the only tropical cocktail popular around here that I'm aware of and they are very popular. 2 Plantation 3 Stars 2 Pineapple Juice 1 Creme of Coconut 1/4 Lime juice 1/8 Orgeat a pinch of salt (which I have added on your recommendation) I am certainly open to new ideas.

I do love me a mount gay xo for a couple different cocktails. I find myself pick up Flor de Cana often for cocktails as well.

Would love to compare the Grande Reserve to our Barbados 5yo. There's enough difference to make it a different Rum i reckon.

Hi Steve, I suggest Appleton Estate 8yo Jamaican, Havannah 3yo white. Aluna Coconut, Wray & Nephew OP. Reasonable, cheap and cheerful cocktail basics. Nick from York

You should try an el dorado 3 year old mojito. Surprisingly unappealing. I wouldn’t send it back…… but compared to 3 star? Not great. But makes a great daiquiri. Of course, I really like daiquiris and haven’t had a bad one yet. Except all Wray and nephew. Lol. That was a bit much!

I think people don’t really grasp or know that Rum is the most diverse spirit category. And videos like this expose them to that reality. Cheers! Keep up the great content Steve.

Not having watched the vid yet I'll go out on a limb and propose that whoever believes there is a single all-purpose rum that'll work in any cocktail for any palate needs to take a few steps back and start at square one. That being said, I can see how, once one's palate is trained and dialled in, one might arrive at a few go-to rums. But then, at least from where I'm standing, the fun is in discovering the endless variations. I basically view my home bar as a chemistry kit for adults where following recipes, then playing around with them, makes for a bottomless well of surprise and fascination. But that's just me 🤓🥂
