I use dark black organic topsoil from local garden centre the one outside in big pile. It grows everything well. But u have to tap it down a bit after seeding to ensure seed to soil contact then water

Great video with all the different composts. I scarified quite heavily and then used Jacks magic { old formula} and just hoping it all comes back. Its a mess at the moment. I used the Landzie. I also like the top soil which you displayed which spreads very well. Jacks magic is very thick so struggled a bit to come out of the Landzie. Thanks Robbie

Yes, i found the new stuff hard to get out too. Lawns always look terrrible for a couple of weeks then all of a sudden the seed pops. You have loads of time for all that to happen before it gets to cold

I used and enriched topsoil on my lawn but ran out with a few meters left to do so poped out and got some westlands topsoil. It had loads of clay in it, stones, live weeds and is by far the worst area of the lawn in terms of successful seed germination. I've since gone over a few areas which needed a bit more seed with Jack's magic and those areas have turned a very rich green and are thickening up nicely.

Great blog Robbie, topdressd my lawn in an overseed with westland weed free topsoil. Great product but as one of your previous videos stated make sure your supplier stores inside to keep dry. Lawn germinated in under 9 days totally, can't complain!!

As always - great advice. A few comments. I found myself clicking on the link rather than liking & commenting (I don't know how that effects the KZfaq algorithm ....) but as I'm a fan I'll go back to the previous video & comment and like (to feed the algorithm) but many people wouldn't bother. A hard conundrum to solve. Perhaps links to other related videos are better linked in the description ??? Each year I look at the Landzie Compost Spreader and think..... that's a bit expensive. I don't tend to oversee my entire lawn (I probably should) but instead concentrate on problem patches. In doing so I can manage without. I really enjoy your videos. Thanks so much & good luck with playing the algorithm lottery & with your excellent affiliate links.

The algorithm is a hard beast to master and no one ever does, appartently it has more than 1500 data points so who knows. Though watch time is king on KZfaq, people don't think of KZfaq in this way, but it was created as an ad platform and still is. It's a misconception to think of it as anythig else Get people to put the videos on themselves and run ads before, during and after the video. The longer the watch time, the more ads they can show/serve to each viewer. That increases the amount KZfaq will show your videos to other viewers, though engagment is key too, back to those 1500 data points. Leaving me a comment, then watching another video, that helps me out a LOT haha

That's good to hear, as peat isn't great on lawns. Once it gets wet, it can be hard to get dry and vis versa

Great video Robbie... Would love one of them spreaders but very expensive, was thinking maybe of getting a sheet of mesh similar size to a drag mat and experimenting with dragging sheet with poured bag of compost on it. You reckon it could work?

Great test Robbie. It is good to see all the different composts on test. Would you say the new horizon and top soil are the best? I have some westland turf dressing I haven't got around to using yet. I think I remember you saying its hard to get hold of in Ireland. Seems a nice consistency.

I have yet to see the westland turf dressing, would like to think that would be the best one! I think the one with the vermiculite could be useful in some situations

@@Premier_lawns_official yes the vermiculite would hold moisture and help in germination. Looks a nice consistency but comes out too quickly. Would need the spade method.

Peat, once it drys it can be hard to get wet. And once it gets wet, it can be hard to get dry (think peat moss bog)

Can top dressing be done by using only topsoil, the reason is for a larger lawn buying bags of compost adds up where as tonne bags of screened topsoil would work out a lot cheaper.

In Autumn I blow as many leaves as I can fit into a corner. I then mix my grass clippings and vegetable scraps to make my own compost. Kew Gardens also recommend peeing on it for the nitrogen and saving water from a flush!

Robbie. One thing I don't think was quite covered and which Daniel Hibbert lawn expert, you mentioned here - he advocates Jack's Magic It contains Seaweed itself in the compost. That you were subsequently adding. Like you said. The lawn absolutely loves seaweed. Especially germinating seed.

I don’t have a roller and I’m over-seeding. Can I step on the compost-seeds to press them into the soil? Or is it better to use the back of a rake? Concerned that a rake will move them around too much. Thanks!

Personally I would like to know which composts on the market do still contain peat. I totally understand that harvesting peat releases Co2 but as you alluded too its the best material out there for top dressing, the old Jack's magic was the best stuff hands down. We should still be able to use it but just in moderation.

What was your concern over the farmyard manure? I've recently tore out my wife's raised bed as we weren't going to use it anymore, and I used this to cover my lawn after overseeding. I know there were a few bags of that exact farmyard manure mixed in with other topsoil/compost bags, but should I be worried!? Cheers Robbie, my young son and I love your videos!

It could be possible for the fresher manure Robbie had to scorch in places, whereas your manure had more chance to rot down so would be safe to use. 👍

Hello, wondering if someone could help me. One corner of my garden (approx 9sqm) is full of weeds. It's a shaded area under a tree. What would be the best way to get rid of the weeds and replace it with grass. There's actually no grass, just completely taken over by weeds. When I'd dig the the weeds out all I'm left with is soil and its not the best.
