This really hits home. I am 45 and had a referral to a neurologist who took my BP once in each arm and said it was high. This was fed back to my GP who took their own measurement once and told me I had stage 2 hypertension and prescribed my bp meds then and there. I foolishly accepted as was worried about other symptoms, I have a mum who died 14 months prior of heart issues who had high bp and the gp also said my cholesterol was high. Not once was a 24hr monitor offered or even suggested. After seeing a cardioligist they arranged a 24hr monitor and my average BP was 120/75. Now I am stopping the bp meds after 4 weeks for a period of two months and will then do another 24hr monitor. I am annoyed with myself that I went on bp meds but even more annoyed that gp is so willing. My weight is fine, I walk 5k most days, don’t smoke, drink very little alcohol and eat fairly well but all GP was looking at was a single BP reading.

Best wishes for your dad Dr Gupta. My father-in-law is a pathologist his best friend a cardiologist. Both graduated summa. They recommend the Omron wrist cuff. Today I tested 97/64. I had a white coat test of 114/79 after running up a flight of stairs because I was late for my appointment. I’m telling you all this because you might find it interesting to know that I have been taking nicotinamide riboside for the last three years. Was 120/80 before I started. I’m a seventy yo male. Cool huh?
@fournierdon2172
@fournierdon2172 2 жыл бұрын
The white coat syndrome is a huge factor. Not just because of the unfamiliar environment but because so much potentially hinges upon it. From recommendations for medication to anxiety about the situation leading to possible curtailment of one's lifestyle, perhaps even to impact on one's employment. Good to see recognition of the unreliability of the 'professional' taking of blood pressure.

Thank you for your very thorough and informative videos Dr. Gupta. In my particular case I was blessed enough to have found a cardiologist who recommended just what you mention about BP measurements. The result of a 24 hour ambulatory monitoring and an echo cardiogram was a recommendation to medicate a mild hypertension with a low dose 3 days a week regimen of Telmisartan ( I live in Mexico, am 76 yrs of age). I write this in order to give testimony as well as gratitude for having found you. Respectfully: Suzanne.

You didn't mention how 99 percent of doctor's assistants take blood pressure incorrectly. In most cases, they take the pressure right away after you sit down instead of waiting to take it after five to ten minutes. Then, afterwards the doctor tells you you have high blood pressure and offers to prescribe meds. This borders on malpractice.

Not only do assistants take inaccurately, nurses and even the docs also do the same. Which I turn raises my b/p as I find them hacks! Do t talk to me when you’re taking my b/p! Yes! I need several minutes to sit and chill! They are giving us all “White coat syndrome!” which is a thing!!

Absolutely 100%correct. 2nd reading is more accurate as the patient is relaxed. Doctors assistant often just do it as they too are stressed watching patients filling waiting room. Normally no 2nd take.

I completely agree. I'm a nurse and when I measure my blood pressure at work, it's always high, with systolic number as high as 150. But since I'm not a morning person, I've always had little sleep before work, I'm busy all day and not in a great mood because of all that so it seems kind of logical to have higher blood pressure in these conditions. But when I'm at home, my blood pressure is always normal and sometimes even lower that I thought my normal blood pressure would be.

A friend bought a BP monitor as his MD recimmended. He was to take & record readings 3x per day, but it always gave the same result, 120/80. He asked me to take mine on his machine to see if it read the same. As I sat at the table to do that, his bride leaned over staring at the screen. Then she took her fingernail and peeled off the clear plastic screen protector which had 120/80 printed on it....

Hilarious... in the sense that MY doctor picked up my BP monitor and threw it in the waste paper basket saying it was 'rubbish'. He told me never to take my own measurements and to depend on those taken in his office or in hospital. I can understand his feelings when people take BP themselves irregularly and obsessively, but I was doing what you suggest here and taking measurements three times a day at precise times and averaging out weekly results. Despite my doctor's negativity I continue to do so and this gives me a much better indication of how I am doing and when I am getting too stressed in my recovery 18 months after a stroke. If only all doctors were as positive as you are and treated their patients like intelligent human beings.

Glad your Dad is better. This was very helpful. Thank you so much. My BP goes as high as 170/100 sometimes over the day but mostly is around 140/80. On two pills a day of lorsartan 50. But I worry when it goes up high. So I am going to try you twice a day morning and even and see what happens. Thank you so much. You are so helpful and explain things so a lay person understands.
