The world around us is a smorgasbord of beliefs, claims, rules and norms about how we should live and behave.
It’s important to tease this jumble of ethical pressures apart so we can put them in their proper place. Otherwise, it can be hard to know what to do when some of these requirements contradict others.
Let’s talk about three different categories of demands on how we should live: ethics, morality and law.
For a deeper dive, visit ethics.org.au/ethics-unboxed/ and subscribe to our free 5-week introduction to ethics course.
//
ABOUT THE ETHICS CENTRE
The Ethics Centre is an independent not-for-profit that advocates for a more ethical society.
A team of innovators, thought leaders and conveners of people and ideas, we deliver a range of services including original programs, consulting, leadership and an ethics helpline designed to bring ethics to the centre of everyday life.
Across our work, we aim to diagnose, prevent and cure the sources of ethical failure, to increase ethical literacy through education and information, and develop tools to empower good decision making.
The Centre’s programs are recognised for stimulating public awareness and understanding, creating a space for open, honest and often difficult conversations.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of The Ethics Centre, and we’re committed to educating, engaging and informing for a better world for the 30 years to come.

Truth is infinite. One truth is always leading to another ultimate truth. Values and principles make up morals. Practiced morals effect values cycle.

Early on in a concern of a crime, I was informed "There is no legal requirement for morals". My experience has been that those that hang out ethics in their shop window but act completely opposite. They have blatantly violated laws and morals and been protected by those that are supposed to regulate them. Our society preaces these things but it a total fraud. In my experience.

Ethics requires us to think about issues the law can’t or doesn’t address. It puts moral systems under the microscope to see if they hold up. In an ideal world, our ethical beliefs shape the kinds of laws and moral systems a society develops. When our conscious, reflective, ethical views on what’s good and right change, we ought to change the laws to reflect them. And likewise, our moralities should evolve in response to insights generated from ethical reflection.

I think the fundamental difference between morality and ethics is that the first is about not doing harm, and the the second is about doing LESSER harm than necessary. Two very different perspectives.

The world around us is a smorgasbord of beliefs, claims, rules, and norms about how we should live and behave. Values are a culture’s standard for discerning what is good and just in society. Values are deeply embedded and critical for transmitting and teaching a culture’s beliefs. Beliefs are the tenets or convictions that people hold to be true.

In practice in philosophy "ethics" and "morality", and "ethical" and "moral", are taken as synonyms. The only people I've ever seen treat these terms as meaning different things have been non-philosophers. For instance "moral philosophy" is often used as a synonym for "ethics" as a branch of philosophy. The names of doctrines with ethics can be called "moral _____", e.g. "moral realism, platonism, subjectivism, scepticism". The word "ethical" earlier in history meant "to do with ethics" but is now used also to mean the same as "moral" in the sense of "having a positive moral quality". E.g. "ethical behaviour" = good behaviour. I have to wonder where people who insist on treating ethics and morality as two separate things get the idea from. After all they are simply terms derived from equivalent Ancient Greek and Latin words.

A genuine question: Pederasty or paederasty (US: /ˈpɛdəræsti/ or UK: /ˈpiːdəræsti/) is a sexual relationship between an adult man and a pubescent or adolescent boy. The term pederasty is primarily used to refer to historical practices of certain cultures, particularly ancient Greece and ancient Rome. Pederasty in ancient Greece was a socially acknowledged romantic relationship between an adult male (the erastes) and a younger male (the eromenos), usually in his teens.[4] It was characteristic of the Archaic and Classical periods.[5] The influence of pederasty on Greek culture of these periods was so pervasive that it has been called "the principal cultural model for free relationships between citizens." Based on your definition, was it moral? And how did ethics play here?

Unfortunately, this viewpoint assumes that there is no inherent, objective and universal Truth to begin with and also that religious morality is followed unconsciously and does not teach that its followers should live in constant self-examination and constantly examine the religious texts to prove them in daily living. Christianity, for example, requires the same conscious examination of ethics as described here, and the very concept of law and order is an imitation of the way of law and order of the Creator as revealed throughout the ages. Divine morality then governs law with ethical principles.

Yep, agree. It's the perennial question, how can something that is unethical, immoral, and even unlawful become ethic, moral and lawful, or visa versa if there is now unmovable yard-stick by which to measure such concepts. As a Catholic, I was raised on examining the foundations of ethics, morality and law. I still constantly question the reasons why something might be considered unethical, immoral, and unlawful - it is almost always because it is harmful against either the individual or the society, not because God said so. But, maybe 'God said so" because certain activities and beliefs are harmful. So, for me the question isn't going along with a law, an ethical proposition or a certain morality, but asking and deeply asking, scientifically asking, research-based asking whether an activity or even belief will in the short and/or especially long term, lead to harm of an individual, or society.

(I shall defend the truth as a whole and not my perception in part to that of the lies conducted by others.) = This is Anonymous had logic, philosophy, science, history, and more though a flaw as that of man to life itself is imperfect, yet justified before more worthy than others to life as a piece if so it were of its own ego rather than for safety to living to speak or enhance.) Under that life it is we as a nation who valued that of old understand our mistakes, whereas the world fails to learn. Or rather they acknowledge and yet persecute then deny as thieves. America has a right to stand in this to that of so does the world to live and not be a fool of the intellectual active ego, though one has understood as I have blasted at points for which many of us lost sanity.) It is not for me to do the world's job for which many of you try to limit people, rather than expand upon the ideas. It is not up to me to state to others I shall give you and you be forced under me by made up false agreements. (A problem with the laws and trade policy to business ethics of their own.) It is therefore we the people of America to many more others as we a republic for which it stands express we gave others after to many my time, (It does not matter what party one is and also to this fact, let those with a right cause defend = also the democratic value on a high grounds has no place to stand in what others tried to hurt one nations group of people alone. Each nation to people should here defend its posterity. Though I shall in this case defend what an American to many more know - or at least that they should.) As well as the Chinese to others to just stop lying on the internet and others trying to pretend to be certain people they are not though they could have a real to fake name and use these letters. If you were an honest man in those nations, your nation if so oppressed would speak out against its own military to the point where the population would try to be considerate for its people and fair in the values of work and stability to that of the leaders in law who did not respect the values of life. Thus God, in my mind as a man, supports a man named Trump, to that of not Biden who commits himself a liar of the elders and with the scientists who committed violence with man-made disease or not lethal treatment. It is God who stood for life though it understood its own reason for its purposes.

Who is Lord to me? It is not I, it was a Savior. And if not that Savior, then who aside from exist to the Kingship to laws of man? for it was the symbiology to that which divided itself a Savior. Though imperfect of possession to that of glory and reason to know all, it was highest respected value of America and Israel and memory yet guarded through you dear persecutors and people as I though you more worthy than life itself for the actions which you treat your fellows to life's regret to those of the faith admire their actions of life, integrity for what is right, to the faith if so true to its principles. Where life is justified as a magistrate to teacher to I the conduct of self and man for me to understand my way apart from how one lives, the violence is not of its darkness to pride ego thus taken from purity and freedom. Who am I to we to put my memory to that of God, to the test or a man to inherit passed on thoughts as I? also asking myself what was the limits to thoughts of a man in his childhood? to what is true to me is also true to you to I, and God, and my faith for which I will not get into the old argument of why does life persecute one belief, when each one has a principle of what is universally connected aside from the matter of if you test one, you must test them all. And the agnostic has no means as to defend life but ego unless they as a doubter to unknown conflicted do not understand what religion and faith and law actually are besides politics to means of power for which democratic ideals to the order of life in other means fails in law. For one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. = which others seem to misunderstand so the message is lost in the histories of time to what others older should have proven to me the younger, and yet some to many decided lets change the way others think and commit a holy war. = Wrong... therefore the younger persecute the elder if they do not prove integrity, to that of parents and more the young as I for their hypocrisy. Life teaches life to what is a void in your heart people of old that tried to destroy the new without applying much? (this is where others like those dictators to traitors as Judas against with Romans and Jews that persecuted their own to that of rioters and the situations of Isis and the education system... (some to many to the last of us the Jewish-Grecian Gentile) Christ (he being a Jew to the first), Isis, democrats who do not believe the concepts of God to I do not know it all and by some statistic know life all to should not witness all. Who in the angelic council were like unto me, spirits of fire and yet also a teacher and a councilor, to understood how life heals itself and manifests without darkness the healing? Which is how some to me cheated death. Though we expect it naturally and not so by mankind to that of some natural disfunction as if we knew fear rather than courage or some denied as the cause of argument to null of life. I have an imperfect knowledge but do not know in my head statistics in numbers in totality. Therefore, what taught life was not ego to academics a new but itself to its conduct. Life could not live all. I see myself or envision myself = not as God, not as mankind's actions, not as a devil, not as a creature to be manipulated to life put to the test, but myself for I am a man. I am a mono-theist, and not polytheistic. In God's weakness was strength for which by man heals to many more though life itself cannot stand for the hypocrisy of ego. The church has and had these concepts though many of you took advantage of the common good to the people and in modern day people do not go, some people. Though it is not the ancient church or that of modern that had these principles but the citizens to that of what was respectable of life. Who said that I grew up in church, and because I was forced to go that I shall respect something that others did not follow yet taught? However, I had respect to acknowledge the fact that respect to values of life once existed to exist or manifests itself before me to after. Thus the memory of what is persecuted is not lost or forgotten but acknowledged in a high courts to not just my eyes, but life is that of God and those of us who defended a name to more meaning of it, and not our ego to that pride. Thus why put something ancient to the test? when it is the values of what is modern and ancient that understood it and yet it was worthy more than I to hold respect? The argument is first through twentieth century for which I had taken some from a concept of living to what I ask a favor and not for my greed, do I as a man really need to know everything, witness everything, or matter of fact that one is young, and Christ though he was persecuted at an age for a man to many more, ask in favor that those whose names as I knew of God and predicted circumstances of God, to that of the disciples and apostles who defended God understand this that life wicked had mercy of God, though the Lord true and God would not spare their deeds aside from let them live and teach based on lesson to which life was stable and God could not interfere with the conduct to tempt a man? It is the devil who tempted God and man decided lets follow one side or the other to that of can they just be themselves and sane with nature to what is with understanding? I being one with an inherited memory not my own life in pattern of thought, ask myself what was a past to what the hell did life just say or give me the thoughts to even express it. Who made life Christ when that of Christ was a savior so we as mankind do not have to sacrifice vain but understand? I ask you, though people thought Christ was worthy of death. He holds the key to life and death but would he pass on the power? He threw down power, like I in the rings issue. Our deepest held compassion for life to even exist to those have guarded Him to the modern day like I. Mankind though it honors of itself to spirit would fight to the death. What say you of life? = lesson learned from Israel, Germany, and Japan. Uncalculatable is a true spirit's age to that of Israel and Abraham as that of the world could not be numbered by mankind. Demonic spirits are not God and nor is the wickedness of mankind. Thus, Anonymous and hacker rings to liars, you persecuted us of Christians though we did not have it right either in understanding of our own to who confused history among the culture to that of the pagans and thus I being a man was against the cultish of those who acted uncivil just like Christ the first though I am not God and I am not a Devil. So let us explain to you this... I dealt just now with the dark spiritual, the intellectual, and that of the Buddhist and that of the Japanese who believes in man as God in dark philosophy to that of Hindus believe on reincarnation. So let me explain this... Spirit remains the same though makes its heart in the conduct of thought to that of what it is passed on through conscience. Though in many forms of energy, it takes also of its manner. The thoughts of God are indeed that of mankind second to first after spirit aside from the fact that man actually existed forever to a point as the earth acknowledging unless God wrote it the spirt, that man came before spirit or the spirit was once a man. Knowing, even a spirit has a heart. Though you destroyed a Lords, name... who or what name inherited it to protected it? or thus persecuted itself though the council predicted it, to the prophets aside from the facts that the Lord disregarded his own ego to the ethics of divine, and that of certain names. The Pharisees and leaders twisted a name of the true Lord. It is not for me as a man to force these thoughts on you. Nor does my God tempt me a man. Yet Satan I am against with those of you who lie and he was dead in life but not in spirit. I know Satan can tempt God to a natural manner and not a man. The ways of spirit are to be preserved and not manifested as a natural stability law to that of the common nature in the environment as a matter of modern stability for why life even exist. Or is so defined by a greater purpose than what I as a man could even understand because life taught me. By persecuting us you persecuted wickedness also yourself and goodness with it. And thus who in modern day has the Lord's memory? Guess what? You just encountered a mini-version of life wanting life, to that of God though life the real Lord to law would rebuke me. And I do not take credit for what life does before me but I acknowledge it. Life itself, I know is not sinless if so it were a form of nothingness to a void and shell less it has its heart to even perceive thought to emotion. There was no wickedness intention in many thus many who did acts or broke law lived and not being spared from it, but held their memory in pain to regret. Those who have true peace, live not by wealth or freedom as to persecute to earthly value, but they understand what others feel to what is myself? They do not fight for death to if you see your ego as that of much twist life to make it want ego, you yourself and I are not worthy of it though I am not perfect as it for knowing to act but understand and observe it.

I think morals are there. We often see many religious people push their respective moral values onto other groups. Sometimes they fail but most times they pass. But is it ethical to push one’s moral beliefs onto others? I don’t think so. The more the society moves towards equality the more it moves towards ethics.

For Muslims, God is the one who determines the standards of morality and legislates the law. Why should I obey a law made by another human being who is no better than me at anything? Why should I abide by morals agreed upon by a group of people that change with the change of time and place? God is the one who determines what is right and what is wrong and what is the law that people should follow. God is the only legislator and educator of true Muslims. Our rejection of human law and human legislation is what means that we believe in God and disbelieve in all other gods. These gods may be governments that seek to control humans by creating moral standards appropriate to their interests, and then protect these morals with laws. Like homosexuality, which was known in all religions and cultures as a crime and an immoral act. Like marijuana, etc. Perhaps tomorrow they will legalize pedophilia and incest.

@@jynx3978 The focus of my speech is not about incest, but rather 🛑who has the right to legislate, 🛑 📛who decides what is right and wrong. 📛 As for incest (it is not my argument), but this is the words of our Prophet (Whoever practices incest, k ill him.) The Prophet sent a man to k ill a man who married his father's widow (who was not his mother) after his death.

Actually you are wrong. Homosexuality was not a crime in other cultures. It was mainstream in fact in many of the polytheistic cultures. Even some gods embraced homosexuality and gender fluidity. Wave of homophobia was actually a recent side effect of British colonialism. But after the era colonialism ended you are already seeing homosexuality and gender fluidly becoming mainstream. Also to point out about values god, the textbooks that you were referring to were creating by human beings and not god. So at the end of the day you are just living by the standards by a specific culture at a specific time in the past which is not universal.

@@PGVEL I intended to reply to you. But I will refrain for two reasons. The first is that I would rather talk to shit than talk to someone from 🤢🏳️‍🌈🤮. The second is that KZfaq prevents leaving links in the comments.

@@islamdowidar1930 and yet you replied. You could’ve followed through with your conviction and not replied. Also, your hatred is not new to me. Thankfully I live in a developed first world country where equality is enshrined and valued by the majority. Thankfully humanity has prevailed and evil teachings of your religion have failed here. Also my feelings are mutual to your cult 🤢🤮. You should go and talk to your shit, I mean your fantasy god.

Why does the presenter have the definition backwards???? If morals are nothing but standards or customs why do we need another word for what we already had? This makes no sense. If ethics were as you say in this video why are there different codes in different sets of ethics? For instance, legal ethics are distinct from business ethics which differs from military ethics and so on. What are you going to tell me those areas don't have written ethical codes? You have this backwards. FIX IT!!!
