What is the difference between SCADA and HMI?

Today, you will learn the difference between a SCADA system and an HMI. We will talk about the differences as well as the similarities, and also when each is used. There is usually some confusion because of the similarities.
SCADA stands for “Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition.”
These are used for monitoring and controlling large areas, typically a full site or plant.
SCADA systems are a combination of many systems including sensors, RTUs or Remote Terminal Units, and PLCs.
Data from all of these systems is then sent to the central SCADA unit. That SCADA unit has its own HMI. This is why a lot of people get confused and think SCADA and HMI are one and the same.
That HMI or “Human Machine Interface” unit on the SCADA can monitor and control anything that is connected to it. In conclusion, HMI can be part of SCADA but SCADA cannot be part of an HMI. It’s that simple.

A PLC which is controlling a vendor specific piece of equipment in your plant could link to a DCS field station controller (PCU) via say, ProfiNet. This DCS I/O controller (PCU) will also then link to all other field stations and operator stations and thus we have the ability to control, supervise and monitor the entire plant process with DCS redundancy and high speed. But lets say this Plant is only 1 of 5 and they are placed in different locations across the country each with there own DCS system, It's the SCADA system that will then link theses plants and collect there data in a centralized location and store this data on servers, you would also have the ability to view the entire system (all plants) on some form of SCADA operator station, but the information will be sourced from gathered data in the server.

Can SCADA overwrite a function or a command from the controlling base station, that has been given from a field operator on his responsible PLC or PID (direct field controller) in case of emergencies? for example, a PLC controlling three pumps has been given a command from the field operator using its HMI, to work on 80% to fast forward the process to meet the job deadline, but from the database stored SCADA has a program for each pump maintenance table, and when working on 80% one of the pumps will not hold for the working time that has been set on its controller. Can SCADA overwrite the command of 80%? Will, it detects that before the job starts and notify the field operator that this command is a risk? or just record the event for investigation if the pump breaks afterwards.

This all depends on how you program the system. If you need the SCADA to overwrite a command in the field, you can program the system to do this.

So if I'm understanding this right a SCADA is really a whole system being networked in together which would include a central type PLC (Data Concentrate PLC) which then also has its own HMI to be able to control all those other PLCs remotely through the HMI. While the word HMI just means the machine screen controls for one local PLC

1:36 Central HMI, just a screen, can control anything. Scada is like an umbrella which includes everything: HMI(central and localized) process controllers like PLC, sensors and actuators.

I think both PLC and DCS will be around in the future and they will be improved.

Dcs is best for precise analog control like in refineries or process plants with higher no. Of pid loops so it will always be in need While scada is more about a centralized software setup whether its a plant or a production line or a city traffic management system

If you are referring to PCS7, there is no good open source equivalent that can provide all of the base features of PCS7. You can put together a patchwork of applications and controllers that approximate these features. PLCNext from Phoenix Contact is a good place to start for open source controllers and applications.

So is it right to say that every DCS's HMI is actually a SCADA systems? Since the DCS's HMI is the supervisory of other control systems'

The DCS itself could be thought of as a SCADA system if there are many remote controllers and I/O. An HMI is part of most all SCADA and DCS systems. HMI's only provide an operator interface to the process, and stand-alone, HMI's are not SCADA systems without other devices, like CPU's, I/O and communication models.
