In 1987, GDP (Nominal) of both countries was almost equal. But in 2019, China's gdp is 4.78 times greater than India. On ppp basis, GDP of China is 2.38x of India. China crossed $1 trillion mark in 1998 while India crossed 9 year later in 2007 at exchange rate basis.

that 2-3 kms is critical for establishing the dominance, occupying the heights in those areas can make bring adversaries to its knees when needed. India has already lost 50% of kashmir and ladakh to Pakistan and China, India is not ready to loose a inch land anymore even if it means war.

My village is 50km away from India China border where all this happening and I can tell u 3 things: 1. There is massive built up being done in the region even though a full scale war is not possible here 2. Such things happened regularly but the difference was this time india retaliated. 3. The border is not defined. It's just open valleys and skies. It literally doesn't make sense for China to attack and grab territory and loose it's soldiers china is probably doing this just to satisfy it's ego or to suppress sentiments in china itself.

If you look at the history of India from 1947, India is so tricky and always play double games and always tried to be super power in Asia.
