Jar of Fireflies

Күн бұрын

Today I am taking you along as my family performs the Havdalah ceremony at the end of Shabbat. This Jewish ceremony signifies the close of Shabbat. I also explain to yo the symbolism and meaning behind this special ceremony that we perform each week as shabbat comes to a close.
Hello and welcome! My name is Chana, I’m married to my best friend, and together we have three wonderful children together. We also happen to be Orthodox Jews and we homeschool our kids. This vlog is a sneak peek into our daily lives :) Thanks for watching this day in the life of an Orthodox Jewish homeschooling mom of three!

Thank you for sharing a part of your religious ceremonies. It was really interesting. I noticed the tassles hanging under the shirt of the person holding the candle, I'm ashamed to say I have forgotten the proper names for Jewish garments, it's been a long time since I was in school and learning about Judaism, do your husband and sons always wear the tassled scarf and hat (is it called a kippah?) or do they only wear them for ceremonies? I love learning about how other cultures go about their day to day lives so watching your videos is so informative, once again thank you so much for sharing.
@jaroffireflies

Thank you so much for watching and commenting! The strings are part of a garment called tzitzit. My husband wears them all the time during (except while sleeping), but it is our tradition to wear them tucked in his pants. My son wears them sometimes, but generally out because he’s six and that’s more practical for him 😊 The gentleman you saw holding the candle is our neighbor, who stopped by for havdalah with our family, it’s his tradition to wear them showing like you saw. I’m so glad you are enjoying and learning from my videos! Please feel free to ask about anything! 💕

We have just started doing Havdalah regularly during lockdown. We always did Kiddush on Friday night but Havdalah generally only a couple of times a year at camp. Since lockdown we have been joining online services with a Rabbi we know well and he does a Zoom Havdalah every week. It has become such an integral part of our week that we do it together even if we miss the Zoom call. Definitely one we will continue :-)

Thx for sharing. I think the leader dipped his finger in the wine after it was poured on the plate? Also, if children are under the age of 13, are they obligated to stay up for these ceremonies..in summer they can be late. TIA!
@jaroffireflies
@jaroffireflies 2 жыл бұрын
No one is obligated to stay up, we can say it up till sometime on Tuesday even :) Yes, it’s a tradition to dip your finger in the wine and put it on the back of your neck or pockets or a lot of other things. I don’t know what they all mean but different people have different traditions with that or not do it at all

Do you apply a drop of juice to the nape of your neck? And why is this done? Otherwise, My Havdallah is similar.
@jaroffireflies
@jaroffireflies 3 жыл бұрын
It’s a Kabbalah thing that has to do with a bone in the back of our necks that last longer than any other bone. I don’t completely understand it, but it’s our tradition so I do it 🙂

What chapter in the Torah is the blessing in?
@jaroffireflies
@jaroffireflies 3 жыл бұрын
"Remember the Shabbat day to make it holy,” reads the text of the fourth of the Ten Commandments. Our sages understand this to be an instruction to verbally declare Shabbat’s holiness when it arrives and (possibly also) when it departs
