In a few days, after 16 years in power, and almost exactly as she had planned, Angela Merkel will depart the political stage for good. Tonight, in a dramatic, yet modest, torch-lit farewell ceremony, German soldiers offered their gratitude and highest honor to Merkel. Merkel then offered her thanks to the military and the nation for allowing her to occupy the highest seat of public service for 16 years. There was no departure from style or substance tonight. In her speech, the Chancellor called on her country and its allies to remain true to the values that made her life and her story possible.

Never voted for her for her party is not everybody's cup of tea. But I am sure she will be missed when she is not in office any more. Her competence in foreign policy was extraordinary. When there were problems coming up she never ran away but seized them by the collar.

She was great at crisis management indeed but that comes at a cost, her politics were uninspiring if not outright boring and lacked vision and long term strategy. It certainly could have been worse but a change is needed. Thank you for your service.

@@yingfengxuan Ha, ha, the U.S. is so bad that Afghans were risking their lifes trying to escape the Taliban takeover by hanging on to a plane. And ooh yes, WWII when Soviet soldiers were executed because they tried to retreat, and when Stalin started off by killing a million of his fellow comrades because of his paranoia and later finishing off with a 20 mil death count. Great times, I see what you mean. Truly the communists are great individuals, just wish my country was run by them, what could go wrong?!
