Some thoughts and theories behind my Beogram 3400. Maybe the best sounding turntable I’ve ever owned. What makes it so special?

Two reasons that your B&O turntable sounds so good. First, the table is extremely well isolated. The design is for isolation. Secondly, the cartridges are EXTREMELY low mass. They weigh about 1.5 grams, where standard size cartridges weigh up to 5 times the weight

Greetings! First off, I loved your video! You are describing in everyday terms what owning a B&O turntable is all about. Perfect. You are displaying a fine example of the first B&O turntable I owned, and loved, many years ago. Now I have my current B&O system, featuring the Beogram 4002 at the center of it, you can see my video for a demo of the system in action... but you hit the nail on the head. What makes the sound quality so beautiful, honestly, are the cartridges. The B&O cartridge, even the lower end, rivals most other audiophile cartridges out there. Playing my 4002 through the Beomaster, with a new pressing of Adele 19, is stunning... every nuance in her voice is captured and reproduced flawlessly, the subtle tones of her gentle vibrato as she leans-in to the next note she sings is stunning. I am 55 years old, and an IT professional, but last night I sat back, closed my eyes, and just listened to her sing. It was magical. In my KZfaq vid of my system (I played an old live performance of Judy Garland lol, not by choice, but due to copyright), you can see I have a lower-range level of Beovox speakers, and even THEY sound great when playing my system. But my 4002 has the midrange MMC20EN cartridge, and it reproduces the vinyl flawlessly. I envy you! Your turntable brings back such wonderful memories, and will provide you with years of listening enjoyment. In my experience, your turntable is brilliantly designed with performance and reliability. A great video, thanks so much for posting it for us!

I still own a 1600 with a 10 MC that bought new in 1982. Still in mint condition. Reproduces faithfully.

The real magic is the perfect matching of mass and compliance between tonearm and cartridge. Get the capacitance and resistance matched with preamp and you are golden. I had the same turntable with the top of the line 20CL cartridge and never second guessed it. It was easy on the vinyl too. I really regret losing it. It’s amazing how much *reliable* tech B&O could cram in these sleek designs. The only issue I had was the dust cover snapping at the hinges. The second replacement addressed that permanently. Yes, the tonearm and platter are on the same sub chassis, ala AR-XA. It amazes me that they squeezed that suspension system in that shallow enclosure. That thing is not just a pretty face! It wasn’t even the top of the line when sold new. You can get new cartridges and service for them from Soundsmith in NY. By the way, it’s “mag-na-planar”. I had a pair of them and a 200w Harman Kardon amp with the B&O. Loved it.

I restored purchased a bit damaged B&O Beogram 1700 with MMC20S then got sec hand MMC20E and when I found one got also MMC 20 CL Because I wanted the lowest tracking force. Surely pickups price topped turntable purchase but as I play occasionally I do not expect them to replace fior new at all. Only problem I see that with very low tracking force care must be put to cleanliness of LP because dust easy may be stuck to needle. Very big advantage is also low mass of arm - of course it was not easy for producer to do. With all of them in different years I copied LPs to magnetic tape and now I can compare recordings. I would say the differences are so slight that without knowing I would not notice. Anyway quality is also not recognizable to radio stereo progamm if such is played direct from studio LP turnatable. I admire stability of revolutions - very quick and effectively corrects momentary alterations of torque. I had before much worse turntables. B&O is for me just perfect in compare . .

@@Mikexception My current B&O Beogram RX is is very close to the 1700 with an even lighter tonearm and cartridge. Adjusting it is difficult, but I love it. It was much less costly than any comparable modern turntable and is fully automatic as well. I’m quite happy. That’s not to say that I will never get another. I like the Technics turntables too, but they are too massive and the good ones are fully manual. I would consider a new Dual automatic instead.

@The Vinyl Guru - greetings, happy holidays to you... not as fragile as one might think, the installation and replacement of an MMC cartridge is the best example of owning this cartridge, whether on this TT or the 4000 series, just a stable grip and even pull, and then reverse the process, and voila! It’s a great cartridge series, and now you can get the adapters to install the B&O cartridges in any head shell. 😀😀😀

Well, I’ve did a little research on this a while back. For the record player it self. It’s heavy and thus resistant to rumbling. Above that, the mechanism itself is suspended. So the platter is suspended in a vibration resistant plint. Then comes the tone arm, it’s lightweight. In several suspension parts on its own on the platter suspension. The comes the cartridge. 🙄 Google search “ b&o cartridge exploded view “ You can see the needle is bonded to a cantilever that reduces vibration over the length of it. Meaning, it does not harmonically vibrate nor the up and down movement are recorded. This cantilever is in a suspension ( that’s the suspension new old stock might have problems with.) and has a cross plate attached to the end. This plate moves the magnetic field around the magnets ( so it does not move the magnets in the coil) which is then picked up. And send to the amplifier. All in all, the only physical contact to the vinyl is the needle to the crossplate. After that everything is suspended. I’d like to say that B&o made a seismic meter suspended in a concrete block. So it only starts registering when there is an earthquake on the scale of 5 and above. There is so much thought put in this design. It almost over complicated for something that could have been done much simpler. But then it would be a Bang @ Olufsen. 😉

Although, not made to last. The plastic inner tabs on the multifunction switch came loose, and switch is now useless. Got some use with the machine, not much.

Hello, I just bought a Bang & Olufsen Beogram 7000 turntable with built in preamp, it has a Din 5-pin male connector, how do I hook it up to a system with RCA input jacks? Do I need to get an RCA cable with a ground cable? I wasn’t sure because this deck has a built in preamp. Thanks in advance.
