Even if you disable it in the config, to NEVER remind you of any update (not even for a single update, ANY updates), it still pops up. It's practically an adware mod that only advertises itself. I completely dropped it for journeymap.

For anyone confused, I believe the reason that some mods have been downloaded even more than the game that they work on them self, it is probably due to the mods being installed by the same people many times

For all curious: Optifine is widely regard in modding community servers as heresy. It interferes with too much of the game's code, and often causes instability. So much so, that the first question you'll be asked when you ask for help is "Did you try deleting Optifine?". Rubidium (Forge) and Sodium (Fabric) are the current go-to performance enhancement mods.

I use a texture pack that requires to have optifine, and honestly it works fine for me imo. optifabric seems to run much better compared to just normal sodium fabric when you put multiple performance mods together.

Single player commands deserves an honorable mention. SPC paired with Too many items was our creative mode during the beta era. Would have easily been the two top mods back in the day

There's also technically the horses mod which, unlike Optifine, actually got implemented into the base game, so anyone who downloaded a version with a horse has downloaded an ex-mod.

Weirdly enough, I've found that Fabric runs better on my old laptop now. So I've been using the Sodium + Iris combo. Given the growing popularity, I wouldn't surprised if it didn't wind up high on a new list in a few more years as modmakers gravitate toward making Fabric versions or Fabric only versions of their mods.

Because it is less invasive and better optimized. I started playing on fabric because most of my favorite forge mods have not been updated to newer versions I play yet

Also it's open source. There is a reason why optifine almost never is includes in mod packs. That and also compatibility.

I used to think fabric wasn't worth it but the amount of mods for it has grown over time, and its pretty good in the 1.18 - 1.19 era

Indeed, for 1.16+ most Forge mods are available for Fabric and some mods are only on Fabric. It just performs so much better and runs lighter.

I wonder how much other non curseforge mods have been downloaded. Two very popular ones that come to mind are the Lucky Block mod which is very iconic. The other very popular mod being the Ore Spawn mod which is a massive mod which could by itself probably be considered a modpack by it's sheer amount of content. It also was very relevant (in my opinion) on youtube and was also in crazy craft which that was a massive thing of it's own. Although the Lucky Block mod is still being updated to this day the Ore Spawn mod hasn't do to the drama involved in it's development with it not being updated past 1.12. Ore Spawn may not be getting updated but there is a remake underway called Chaos Awakens by the original team (minus the original developer which is the cause of the original not being updated) and it looks really promising, it has been in development for I believe almost two years now but it's not complete yet it hasn't added it's most iconic bosses yet which were Mobzilla, The King, and The Queen

I am surprised that World Edit and Create Mod were not mentioned here since these are used a LOT these days. World Edit is important for server creation and map making, making life way easier and allowing you to be more creative, and the Create Mod not long ago was all over KZfaq due to big content creators, so everyone was downloading it. I guess these two mods are not as well known as I thought.

OptiFine is still ""compatible"" with Forge, as in, it works as a forge mod, the bigger problem is that OptiFine straight up replaces vanilla source code which breaks a ton of mods and it's closed source so noone knows what its doing.

I've always loved that when it comes to tech mods like applied energistics immersive, engineering industrial craft, mekanism, etc most the time they have alot if compatibility with each other when it comes to generating and storing power or RF to use with different items from said mods. Like I could take a power cable from mekanism and use it to connect two blocks from applied energistics.

I am surprised that you didn’t mention forge. It has to be up there with optifine. A modloader is also just a utility mod that adds the ability to easier install and load mods into the game.

Same for me. Tinkers is a fantastic mod, the only limitation is that it was never updated past 1.12 until recently. Since the release of create, I've always had to compromise one for the other. Only found out recently that tinkers made a 1.18 port late 2021 and have kept it updated since. Definitely going to become a go-to again for modded tools for me.

I don't even use Optifine anymore, I resorted for an alternative, which is Sodium & Iris for renderer optimizations and shaders support, Lithium for engine optimizations, Indium for Indigo renderer engine support, Phosphor for lighting engine optimization and Continuity for connected textures support (requires Indigo, which requires Indium on Sodium installations). For the zoom, I used to use Logical Zoom, but now I use Zoomify, which has more features. All because Replay Mod no longer works with Optifine.

I gave up on optifine kind of already when sodium just released. When other modders capitalized on sodium and created all the replacement mods it only became worse for optifine imo. For me personally optifine died onces most shaders were supported by iris + when iris finally added the shader customization feature that optifine has.

Try Starlight instead of Phosphor. It too changes the lighting engine, but it does it more aggressively and thus usually gives higher FPS than Phosphor (no, it doesnt break any mods, even if it says it might.)

Although it isn't the most downloaded mod of all time (only about 40 million downloads) and is relatively newer, I'm surprised the Create mod didn't get featured here. In my honest opinion, it is one of the coolest mods that I have ever seen, and the modpacks centered around it are incredibly enjoyable to play through.

I used to play a lot of modpacks from 1.5 to 1.16 and wow all this progression on mods is beautifull, and I can see how Minecraft evolved, I don't even play modded anymore because vanilla today is pretty much the modpack at the time. Thanks to all modders out there (I know it's not easy).

As a normal player who make modpacks and play, I download almost every mod from this because I really think they very useful. I cannot make modpack without JEI or AppleSkin or without Controlling or without any map mod. These mods are just attach to me when I'm playing vanilla I normally download sodium with these mods in fabric versions. These 4 mods(Journey/Xaero map. I cannot play without one of these map mods.) have been attached to me, I cannot play without these mods. Edit : I forgot optifine, I cannot play without it too. atleast I use a zoom mod

5:27 JEI actually wasn't the last, REI aka Roughly Enough Items would also be released as another option in the enough items family. With many improvements like visually saving recipes to be viewed automatically when opening the inventory, exporting recipes as image files for mod pages, different light modes for the inventory GUI, item grouping various similar items like planks, and many more features.

If you include IrisShader & Sodium, then they are both strong candidates in this list because despite being rather new compared to optifine, they already stacked over 15M & 20M on curseforge. If they had been just as old as optifine they probably would be well over in the 100M

AE 2 is basically my childhood xd I've refused to play any modpack without applied energistics which must've really annoyed my friends trying to play non-technical modpacks but it just got a special place in my heart

some things to note: ae2 is used in almost any modpack with a hint of tech, its storage utility is almost unmatched, and is essential for expert mod packs, making it alot more popular Immersive engineering and thermal are staple tech mods, its hard to find a modpack with tech that doesn’t include immersive or thermal despite optifine’s immense popularity it is almost never used in large modpacks due to it causing alot of rendering issues with certain mods (its also pc dependant) journey map: press J twilight is one of the oldest adventure mods, i remember it being around for a loooong time, adding to its popularity, will it ever be finished though? many consider quark to be the quintessential QOL mod, its extremely helpful to add for its many qol features, and is probably the best mod to add to a vanilla+ modpack

Agree that Optifine is definitely #1. A lot of the others are very hard to estimate. Need to remember than before 1.8, CurseForge wasn't really a thing. Modpacks were privately hosted on places like FTB, ATLauncher, Technic, etc. Modpacks like Tekkit, Yogscast Complete, Resonance Rise, and the FTB packs would absolutely balloon the number of downloads, particularly for NEI since it rode the full span from the 1.1/1.2.x peak through the end of the 1.7.10 peak. I would guess since NEI was a staple in practically every modpack that it is up there with Optifine far beyond the rest.

Guess: Just Enough Items/NEI, it is included in every modpack and is considered practically mandatory for any custom pack... recipe book is really meh.

I haven't downloaded Optifine in a while, I've recently started downloading Sodium and other mods from it's creator. Sodium just gives me better fps and I can get zoom via a zoom mod. Plus recently more content mods are getting ported to Fabric

The shift away from optifine to open source mods like sodium with lightweight mod api's like Fabric is a common trend for the last 3 years it seems. I don't mind it. I actually think optifine really isn't the mod anymore to get fps (it's also not really supposed to do that as it has lots lf features which decrease the fps which I like. Nowadays I just get these features from other mods. It's more work to set up everything but at the end I have the same visual experience like with optifine but it's more stable and gives more frames)

I wonder what the future of Optifine is now with the Sodium series of mods being a viable and arguably in many ways better alternative to Optifine.. I made the switch to Sodium/Rubidum a while ago now and I'm not going back to Optifine anytime soon.

The future of optifine will probably be that it's used on older versions and for low end pcs, I think it's due to the graphics but optifine performed better on my iGPU than GPU

There's also REI (Roughly Rnough Items) and EMI (Mod author didn't pick one for some reason) born out of the fabric/quilt modloader, though each doesn't quite have nearly the support that JEI does.

Theres also HEI (Hardly Enough Items), a fork of 1.12.2 JEI with a lot better performance, and i guess if you count it theres GTNH-NEI, a fork of 1.7.10 NEI that adds most of the QOL from JEI

tinker's construct applied energistics takes me back. man i use to play mods like it, buildcraft, thermal expansion/dynamics, industrial craft, computer craft (all as part of various feed the beast modpacks).

Would have been worth mentioning that some mods would have got a much higher download count if you concider them also being in modpacks. The counts would be MUCH higher and maybe even some rankings may vary.
