Thanks for the information! I had one of my "feelings" when we first started seeing stories of this virus that I needed to buckle down and do what I am naming my "serious" garden. I used the term "serious" because I am utilizing my space for the foods I really eat (and the flowers needed for my pollinators). I am growing some "new" things, for me. They might fail magnificently, but it is worth the try compared to doing without. I am gardening under the premise that it could be a tough year for 'industrial' farmers.

So much of what you said tonight, Greg, is what I've been thinking. People need to start paying attention to things that really matter. Right now, we're all concentrating on staying healthy, and you folks are doing exacting what you should be doing - protecting yourselves, your families and your employees. I honestly don't think y'all know how to do less than your best, and we can wait a minute for our orders. God is looking after us, and He knows all you folks have done to help other people. It's really good to see folks starting to smarten up and grow food instead of grass. One of my neighbors is a nurse with 5 kids - I took a big bag of collards over to them, and they couldn't believe I just grew them in my back yard! Her oldest son now wants to learn to grow a garden and I pointed out that his back yard doesn't have a ginormous camphor tree in the middle of it. They could easily garden about 3000 sq feet back their! I'm glad to help them, and gave them some of my sunflower, tomato and pepper seedlings. We'll see how they do!

I've been growing Providence on my market farm in Indiana for 15 years and I hear all the time from my customers that I have the best sweet corn they have ever eaten. I grew it when it was Serendipity before they added the rust package. The last few years I have raised the BT version BC0805 for ear worm protection. The only complaint I get is the ears are so long customers have to cut them in half to get them in the pot. The ear height is great making it easy on my back when picking. Another great feature that I love is the suckers will have a tiny ear at the top and black birds will work on them and leave the ears alone giving me time to pick them as the it has the best tip coverage I've ever seen. The flavor just seems to get better as the corn gets more mature and I can stretch the harvest over a week. I bought 20 of your 162 flats to grow it from transplants, in the past I've used 72 count flats and I have to wait three extra days to ensure the root ball doesn't fall apart. With your flats with the 3/8" hole in the bottom, I'll make a bottom dibbler and get them in the ground sooner.

If you snap the top of the bean ever so slightly and run it down the whole bean you will see a string on the side of the bean attached. If you get older beans, or canned beans from the store you will see sometime they don't remove the it and its very fibery and chewy . Mostly from older and bigger beans

I went crazy and risked getting tomatoes and pumpkins and watermelons in the ground when it turned hot in East Texas. Pumpkins planted March 8, watermelons March 10, and tomatoes March 11,12,14, and 15. One variety of tomato is blooming right now. I haven’t checked variety, but it’s a potato leaf variety. With all the crazy stuff going on with covid19, I missed one day and lost a bunch of my backup plants. This looks like one of my lucky years for early stuff. Pole beans 8” y’all taking to the hortonova trellis; yellow squash putting on true leaves; pumpkin plants 18” across; watermelons starting to run; but the heat Wednesday hit 91°F and scorched most everything that was still in trays or small pots. Very frustrating to lose so many plants, but always learning how to grow better plants despite wild temperature swings. Y’all have such great customer service! I know you have standards that hurt you not to keep. When things out of our control like covid19 come round, as you said, Lord willing, we will find a new normal and return to new leaner and better service standard that is more sustainable. Keep the content coming best you can so I have something to look forward to after my evening in the garden too!

I had 1 year after sifting my soil every day after work all winter down at 2' to remove all the rock in a 89'x102' and adding 6" of compost at 3" at a time and tilling it in then adding a total of 6 inches of composted cow manure 3" as well at a time and tilling between applications, I direct seeded my corn with out any prior soaking, just dry out of the package and on the 3rd day All my corn popped out of the ground....… Only problem was that it STAYED that way for 3-4 weeks at around 4 inches tall. So I was getting concerned and walked over to a row and stuck my hand down in the soil.. 98 degree plus it was 6" down lol. So after a cool off my corn rocketed and I still had a great harvest, traded some corn for other crops I did not grow with my neighbor.

So I’m growing potatoes this year for the first time ever. I’m planning on buying some 20/20/20 as a general purpose garden fertilizer? Should I add some of it to the row before I plant the potatoes? I have a small garden and all of my fertilizing will be from just side dressing and/or from a watering can?
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 3 жыл бұрын
20-20-20 is pretty fast acting, so don't know how effective it would be for freshly planted seed potatoes. I'd go with some good compost or incorporate manure along the row prior to planting, then feed them with the 20-20-20 once they're up.

You'd definitely want to stagger the plantings. Otherwise they would cross-pollinate -- unless you plant them about a mile from one another.

Large ears, med yellow color, big, thick kernel, very very sweet, milky and buttery flavor. does everyone remember the name ? also which corn is best for making flour out it ?

I’m trying a synergetic type corn this year. A type you didn’t mention. They say it has the higher sugars than normal types and is more tender than the sh2 types. Best of both worlds. The easiest organic way to get rid of worms in the garden is bluebird houses. I have 9 houses on my farm. I have a nest box in my yard that the babies fledged this morning. We had -3 record temps our previous winter and it killed 90% of my bluebirds. I bet I had 40 on my farm.

Great show ya all, especially like your elephant in the room part. Your customer service has always been excellent. I rather it take a little longer to get something and ya all stay safe than the other way around. Now as for Greg's corn choice, Why dont Greg grow the Avalon as well in the spirit of competition soooo one of ya all can have bragging rights????? So we will all know if 36in row spacing is better than 30in. Or if 8in or 4 to 6 plant spacing is best. Maybe it's just me but I'm of the mind to believe Greg just might win. That's if he doesn't get to hunger first.
